emwriterdude
TCM should have a night with some of those old Ed Wood movies. They are supposed to be terrible, but I would like to see some of them.
bansi4
Movie critic Leonard Maltin has said "Wood's films are so uniformly, absolutely awful that they are great fun to watch". Such titles as "Jail Bait", "Bride of the Monster", "Glen or Glenda?", Night of the Ghouls" and his 'masterpiece' "Plan Nine from Outer Space" are all doing well on VHS and DVD. Mr. Wood had a passion for filmmaking and in his heart he assumed he was making good movies. More famous now than he ever was when alive, more so than some of Hollywoods more prestigeous directors. To get a look into the life and times of Edward Wood see the movie "Ed Wood" with Johnny Depp which shows just how low budget he had to go in making his films. Since TCM runs low budget East Side Kids films it should be fun to see an Ed Wood marathon. Mongo
KeithFromKC
I own PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE and GLEN OR GLENDA? on dvd (should I be admitting that??) and will say that Ed Wood's films are entertaining in a weird way. Of course they are very poorly made, but they still provide plenty of laughs, albeit, that probably wasn't the director's intentions. That Ed Wood thought he was making serious 'art,' tells us that his grip on reality was questionable. But again, his films are actually fun to watch, even if you're just watching them to laugh at the poor acting, the dirt-cheap sets, and dialogue that couldn't have been written by a sane person. I really enjoyed Tom Burton's biopic on Ed Wood, so after seeing it, I picked up a biography on Wood from the library (can't recall the author). He was definitely a first-rate eccentric. How could you not like that in a film director? As far as the widely-held belief that PLAN 9 is the WORST film ever made, well, I personally don't agree. I do agree that seeing some of his films on TCM would be fun, even if they are broadcast in the wee hours of the morning.
deeanddaisy666
I agree, keith. Plan 9 the worst? Hardly. I can sit through Plan 9 more than once, but I surely can't watch Vanilla Sky or Eyes Wide Shut again. Ever. At least Wood wasn't operating under any delusions (or at least I hope he wasn't!). And who couldn't like a director who wore a short sleeve angora sweater??

kenwal34
While agreeing on the fact that Woods made pictures that "were so bad their good", I give the guy E for effort.Try sitting through ROBOT MONSTER,and see a film that makes PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE look like an epic! Next time TCM shows something directed by William "one shot" Beudine, you will see that Woods was not the only inept movie maker out there. My opinion . pgm80s
I have seen Burton's "ED Wood" which I liked but am yet to actually see an Ed Wood film, so I'd really like to see them play a few too. Mostly I've heard a lot about Plan 9 so I want to see that some time.
spencerl964
Good goin' to Mongo, on Tim Burton's 1994 bio "Ed Wood" (***1/2-out of 4) I would almost personally say it's a great picture in itself. As for *Martin Landau-(1928-) as Bela Lugosi-(1882-1956) he gave 1 of the most magnificent performances in recent yrs. It was probably almost a landslide for that s. actor OSCAR that yr. It was also up for & won Best Make-Up. Though, given our era, it's gorgeous & perfecto for the movie B & W cinematography-(plus, most movie-going crowds these days, have hardly even heard of Edward D. Wood, Jr.-(1924-78) So it only grossed a paltry $6 million?-(sadly, he basically drank himself to an early death) & you have another great pt. TCM is airing>"East Side Kids"-(1stly>"Dead End Kids"/ "Bowery Bows"-(the latter handle was their last) But, they were shot at a studio called: Monogram-(which is still-standing?) I've actually seen "Plan 9 from 0uter Space"-(on other stations over the yrs.) "Glen or Glenda," is rarely aired anywhere. Mostly, the most infamous is only aired, so-far anyway.
