*MÄDCHEN IN UNIFORM (1931) "Girls In Uniform"*

*Deutsche Film Gemeinschaft, Germany*

*Full movie in 8 parts (In German with English subtitles)*

*One needn't look any further than some of the pictures posted above to understand just what the sensationalism around this film was about. It touched on a subject way too hot and controversial to be played up in a Hollywood feature of that time to the degree that it was in this German film. Back in the America of 1931, this had to be relegated to the foreign film "arthouse" circuit. It might have "flown" in Greenwich Village or a few other isolated places, but it's exhibition was banned in most parts of the country. It appreared in the US in a heavily edited form.*

*The film is set in a boarding school for the daughters of the Prussian nobility. Regimentation and iron discipline were the values to be imparted. The girls were not expected to become warriors, but were expected to be the mothers of warriors. Their upperclass education was geared to perpetuate the militarism and social norms of their class.*

*The nazis did not like this film. They took exception to the portrayals of German maidenhood swept up in lesbianism and it's questioning of those very social values that they were promoting. Directed by a woman,* *Leontine Sagan*. *She and others connected with the production fled Germany soon after the Hitler governement banned it and tried to burn extant copies.*

*Remade in Germany under the same title in 1958.*

*YOU NAZTY SPY! (1940)*

*Columbia Pictures w/ The Three Stooges*

*Full short.*

*To satirise something like Hitler and his movement, especially back when his star was rising and he was far from done for, was commendable and "exploiting" that which was exploitational. The Stooges were very satirical, something not always understood and appreciated today. They made a series of shorts vicously satirising and ridiculing Hitler and his axis, and You Nazty Spy! was the first of them. According to the Internet Movie Database, it was the first American film to lampoon Hitler, released 9 months before Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator. Doing so was not toally popular in Hollywood, as there was strong isolationist sentiment in the country at the time, and it was feared that Hitler satires risked box office backlash. Then there was the Hays Office, which frowned upon political satires of existing leaders and governments. It is thought that this short got around that simply be being a short, rather than a feature film.*

*Much like the case of Chaplin, Moe Howard's physical resemblance to Hitler (when in makeup) was probably a key source of inspiration to the film. It begins very poignantly with three of "Moronika's" fat cat business/finance leaders deciding that they need to depose the king, install a dictator/stooge who will do their bidding and drum up business by starting a war! They randomly choose Moe and his men as they just happen to be nearby, working as "paperhangers", a satirical reference to one of the odd jobs Hitler used to work at when he was indigent.*

*"My partners and I are going to make you dictator of Moronika!*

*(Moe): What does a dictator do?*

*A dictator? Why he makes love to beautiful women, drinks champagne, enjoys life and never works… He makes speeches to the people, promising them plenty, gives nothing and takes everything! That’s a dictator!"*

*“We will overthrow monarchy, to make our country safe for hypocrisy!”*

*“Our motto shall be: Moronika for the morons!”*

*There was Moe Howard the screen stooge, and there was Moe Howard the man. Being Jewish, I can imagine how strongly he personally felt about Hitler! The Stooges, who were all Ashkenazi Jews, occasionally worked a word or phrase of Yiddish into their dialogue. In particular here, the Stooges make several overt Jewish and Yiddish cultural references: The exclamation "Beblach!" used several times in the film is a Yiddish word meaning "beans". "Shalom Aleichem!", literally "Peace unto you" is a standard greeting in Yiddish meaning "hello, pleased to meet you". "Moe: We'll start a 'Blintzkrieg' (Blitzkrieg). Curly: I just love blintzes especially with sour krieg." This is a reference to the Ashkenazi Jewish dish blintzes with sour cream. In Moe's imitation of a Hitler speech, he says "in pupik gehabt haben" (the semi-obscene "I've had it in the bellybutton" in Yiddish). These references to the Nazi leadership and Hitler speaking Yiddish were particularly ironic inside jokes for the Yiddish-speaking Jewish audience.*

*Columbia Pictures w/ The Three Stooges*

*Full short*

*Colorised version in two parts*

*A sequel to You Nazty Spy!, this was made 5 months before Pearl Harbor. Here is a Stooge film that is heavily, and I mean VERY heavily laced with political satire in almost every line and gag!. WW2 and history buffs will spot them by the dozen They are almost too numerous to mention, and it just doesn't let up:*

*The movie starts with:*

*Sign saying: Moronica uber alles*

**Intro to: His majesty the King of Moronica, Herman the 6th and 7/8

*A dapper old gent is depicted, who was made to resemble the deposed Kaiser. After WW1, Kaiser Wilhelm went into exile in Holland, and a photographer took a picture of him chopping wood on his farm. The picture made a world wide sensation, and that is the image parodied here, where you see the old man cutting a log.*

*Moe plays Hitler. Larry the minister of propoganda, (Goebbels) and Curly "Field Marshall Herring" (Goering). In the background is a banner with a swastika made of 4 snakes.*

*Moe asks for a progress report and Curly reads the ticker teletype:*

*We bombed 56 hospitals, 85 schools, 42 kindergartens, 4 cemeteries and other targets of military importance with our Stuka bombers! Our armies are on the march again, they took paregoric... (aka tincture of opium, or anhydrous morphine), to which Moe says: Good good, good!*

*It's all good man!*

*Larry breaks into his "southern black" pose and act with hand up and says "Ja,Ja my untermensch!"!*

*Other WW2 references follow, taken from the postponed invasion of Britain (Great Mitten), including Mussolini's (Chisolini, as in "chiseler") failed invasion of Greece, the Brenner pass etc.*

*A plot develops to create dissension among the axis partners and to assasinate Moe. Hitler was widely ridiculed at the time for consulting astrologers and occultists, and so a young woman in the film delivers the bomb under a pretext of being his personal astrologer and reading him his horoscope (The "Seeress of Roebuck). She spreads doubt in his mind about his Japanese and Italian allies. He looks through a telescope, and Moe sees a vision from hell, with the three of them roasting over a fire with devils and pitchforks!*

*Moe, suspicious of his allies, calls them together for a conference. They show up, along with an Indian character called the "Bey of Rum", bearing a lit hooka (water pipe), commonly used to smoke hashish. It was common knowledge then that the Germans and the Japanese meant to push and "meet in India", kicking the British out. The Bey of Rum even shouts a Hindi "Jai Hitler!" as he dives out the window.*

*Goering was also reputed to be a druggie (not just reputed but was), hence the great gag with Curly and the hookah! (This was played on in another one of their films.)*

*The insanity culminates with Curly breaking a papier mache globe over Moe's head, which becomes powderised. Moe says:* *"You nitwit! My world! You've shattered my world!"*

*As you are starting to suspect, many of their films, especially those made during the war, require that the viewer have some serious history buff around to explain all the contemporary topical references and gags. Although all of this could be understood by the masses then, as it was pulled straight from the anxious news accounts and headlines of that era, with the passage of decades it has become become obscure for many.*

*It was popular entertainment, but to an audience that feared that what was being made fun of, would turn out to be anything but a joke.* *The Stooges made us laugh, but by doing so were preparing us to buck up for the inevitable tears.*

*Jai TCM! Jai Stooges!*

*Columbia Pictures w/ The Three Stooges*

*Full short in 2 parts*

*Here the Stooges get themselves inside a bomb casing that ends up getting dropped on Germany. In the latter part of the film Goering is satirised. Hilarious is when Curly gets a picture of Hitler stuck on his rear end, and everytime he turns his back on a pursuing German soldier, the soldier robotically snaps to attention and gives out a "Heil Hitler!"*

*FORCES OCCULTES (1943) aka Occult Forces*

*"The Mysteries of Freemasonry Exposed For the First Time"*

*Nova Films*

*Full movie In French with English subtitles.*

*Freemasons! **In this cavalcade of the sensational, how can we overlook them? The German occupation in France didn't, and produced this amazing but sordid relic.*

*The film recounts the life of a young député who joins the Freemasons in order to relaunch his career. He thus learns of how the Freemasons are conspiring with the Jews and the Anglo-american nations to encourage France into a war against Germany.*.

*The film was commissioned in 1942 by the* *Propaganda Abteilung*, *a delegation of Nazi Germany's propaganda ministry within occupied France by the ex-Mason Mamy. It virulently denounces Freemasonry, parliamentarianism and Jews as part of Vichy's drive against them and seeks to prove a Jewish-Masonic plot.On France's liberation its writer Jean Marquès-Rivière, its producer Robert Muzard and its director Jean Mamy* *were purged for collaboration with the enemy. In 1945, Muzard was condemned to 3 years in prison and Marquès-Rivière was condemned in his absence (he had gone into self-imposed exile) to death and degradation. Mamy was thus condemned to death and executed in 1949.*

*I guess the guy wasn't up for an Oscar that year!*

*HÄXAN (1922) aka Witchcraft Through The Ages*

*Aljosha/Svensk Filmindustri Dir/ Benjamin Christensen*

*Full movie*

*The pictures alone give you some idea of what a wild film this is! Somebody has said that it's like what Todd Browning and Jean Cocteau would have created in a collaboration! It is sensational and deals with a sensational subject. For many years, it remained the most expensive film ever made in Scandinavia. It was banned outright in the US and in a great many countries. Obscene if not pornographic, it also was considered quite a vicious slam against the Catholic Church.*

*Häxan features possessed nuns losing it, a nun peeing on an altar, nudity, perverted priests and monks, torture, sadism, witches sabbaths and the devil! It was all too much for the world of 1922, and this film was years ahead of it's time. The director based some of it on a 15th century book for witch inquisitors, the Malleus Maleficarum. The incident with the nuns gone wild was based on a real life episode of mass hysteria and possession at a convent in Loudon, France in 1643, retold by Aldous Huxley in Devils Of Loudon (1952).*

*The movie is in 5 parts, covering the middle ages to modern times. It indicts the church for conducting a campaign of terror against the populace in the name of finding witches. Made many years before there was scientific research into the paranormal, it promotes a rationalistic view of the subject, attributing the phenomenon to hysteria, neuroses and misdiagnosed illnesses. The modern era segment shows a bored affluent housewife who gets her kicks shoplifting, with the implication that her compulsion would have been seen as the work of the devil in a previous age. Instead of the rack, it is suggested that mentally ill people are just that, ill and in need of treatment, not religious torture.*

*Truly a must see! I hope you will watch it and tell me what you think on the discussion thread!*

*RED NIGHTMARE (1962) aka The Commies Are Comming*

*Warner Bros., US Dept Of Defense w/ Jack Webb*

*Full short*

*A man who has taken his freedom for granted wakes up one morning to find out that the Communists have taken over America.* *Jack Webb* *takes an average white American male, husband and father of two, into a vision of what America might be like under Soviet control.*

*Very revealing about the attitude at the time and reflective of Cold War suspicions and tensions. For countries that actually were under communism at the time, I can say that the fears expressed in the film were not far off the mark.*

*Central Cinema Company Directed by Russ Meyer*

*Full movie in 13 parts*

*Picture of Russ Meyer at the camera.*

*Based upon a book* *Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure* *(popularly known as Fanny Hill) is an erotic novel by John Cleland first published in England in 1748. Written while the author was in debtor's prison in London, it is considered "the first original English prose pornography, and the first pornography to use the form of the novel." One of the most prosecuted and banned books in history, it has become a synonym for obscenity.*

*Young, pretty and innocent Fanny Hill has lost her parents and must find her way in life amidst the perils of turbulent 18th century London. She is fortunate enough to find rapidly a place as chambermaid of the effusive Mrs. Brown. Mrs. Brown lives in a large house teeming with female "relatives" in négligée and with very relaxed manners. She also insists that Fanny meets alone various gentlemen who show an ardent interest in Fanny.*

It was the only complete upload source I could find. Not a real problem, as there is not much dialogue and you can hear the english easily enough in the background. It's mostly a visual film.*

*Eve is dressed in a long raincoat and follows the handyman around as he makes his appointed rounds. She watches as he has humorous run-ins while cleaning toilets, taking scrap metal to the dump, cleaning windows, delivering a tree, climbing poles, and remaining a gentleman while trying to help a topless hitchhiker.*

*Citizens For Decent Literature Produced by Charles Keating*

*Full movie in 2 parts*

*An anti-pornography film.*

*This one gets to me folks, not because of the subject itself, but because it represents a hypocritical moral crusade on the part of it's producer,* *Charles Keating*. *If that name sounds familiar it should; Keating was implicated in the Savings and Loan debacle of the 80's, which cost the tax payers over a trillion dollars in bailout. He was head of Lincoln Federal Savings In the 1980s, and took advantage of loosened restrictions on banking investments. His enterprises were investigated by federal regulators. His association with, and financial contributions to, five U.S. senators to argue for preferential treatment from the regulators led to them being dubbed the Keating Five. When Lincoln failed in 1989, it cost the federal government over $3 billion and about 23,000 customers were left with worthless bonds. In the early 1990s, Keating was convicted in both federal and state courts of many counts of fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy. He served four and a half years in prison.*

*In 1958 he went to Washington, D.C. and testified before the House Judiciary Committee on mail-order pornography, saying that it was "capable of poisoning any mind at any age and of perverting our entire younger generation", that it was closely tied to juvenile delinquency, and that it was "part of the Communist conspiracy".*

*Keating founded Citizens for Decent Literature in 1958, (later renamed a number of times, the best known of which is Citizens for Decency through Law). It would grow to 300 chapters and 100,000 members nationwide and become the largest anti-pornography organization in the nation. Over the following 20 years the organization mailed some 40 million letters on behalf of its position and had filed amicus curiae briefs. Keating gained the moniker "Mr. Clean". During the early 1960s, Keating twice requested FBI assistance on behalf of his anti-pornography campaign but the bureau, still skeptical regarding Keating due to its early investigation, declined.*

*That's quite a story. He makes* *Russ Meyer* *seem like Walt Disney when you consider the real measurable damage done to others and their life savings. He's a great object lesson when it comes to those who loudly bang the drum of public morality. I've often found that such people are concealing quite a bit of moral turpitude of their own. Here you can say that of all the filmakers presented here, the guy that made this one takes the ultimate "exploitation" booby prize!*

*The title:* *Perversion For Profit* *is supremely ironical in his case, and would portend his own failure and downfall. Perversion for profit indeed.*

*Narrator: "This moral decay weakens our resistance to the onslaught of the Communist masters of deceit."*

*American International W/ Vincent Price, Frankie Avalon*

*Full movie*

*The sheer farcicalness of this film is well suggested by it's title and the stills above. Something as wildly successful as the James Bond films would inevitably create satirical spoofs, and this one capitalised on the success of* *Goldfinger.* *They even got* *Frankie Avalon, who was riding his wave of stardom at the time, to sign up for this. Of course, any film graced with the involvement of* *Harvey Lembeck (Erik von Zipper)* *is a bona fide classic!*

*Dr. Goldfoot plans on taking over the world with his beautiful female robots, who seduce rich and powerful men. Robot #11/Diane is sent after millionaire Todd Armstrong. *You are a detail guy! "Cinema Sirens" was a likely tip off to me that it's a DVD cover; your catch confirms it to me. Modern video jackets are put together on computer programs like Quark or Pagemaker. (These video companies are often very small operations) Movie posters in the old days were set up on copyboards and were reviewed and approved by studio editors and publicity people, making such mistakes very rare.*

*Thanks! This calls for another Jayne Mansfield film! Stay tuned!*
