I'm doing my dissertation for uni on representation of women in gangster films, and amongst other research I wondered how many of u females out there like gangster films, and y? or if u dont know why, just knowing if ne girls apart from me like gangster films would be good. either email me back at bp1111085@staffs.ac.uk or reply 2 this message. brackenhe Posted February 4, 2005 Share Posted February 4, 2005 I am a "girl" (it's been a long time since my girl-days, but whatever.) I love gangster movies. My favorite movies of all time are Godfather 1 & 2 because they tell the saga of a family, and especially one man (Michael), and how the family's "business" made him into something he never wanted to be. Plus I think Al Pacino gives the greatest performances I've ever seen an actor commit to film. It's funny though--I've never really liked him in anything else so go figure. There were a lot of great ones in the 30's especially starring Cagney & Robinson. There were films where they played both sides of the law with equal intensity. I guess the main reason I like gangster films is because it really gives the stars something to sink their teeth into--where they can really show their "chops" as they say. I like justice and revenge and wrongs righted and evil people punished. I'd like to see all of these things in this world........oops, sorry that wasn't the question. But yes, I like gangster films, starting with Mother of Mercy is this the end of Rico? and Made it Ma top of the world! I like my Bogey menacing and my Cagney evilly grinning. I loved all the Godfathers except the last one, and Goodfellas, Casino, and Mona Lisa. I'm inured to television violence, thanks to movies like this. I liked Wise Guy and Crime Story, even IF the latter got so ridiculous that the mob boss survived a nuclear blast! I like bad men and bad women sooooo much better than goody-two-shoe types! Robinson, Humpfrey Bogart, James Cagney, EAST Side kids, ..... were so damn good!.... The women bedide the gangster were good Jean Harlow, Virginia Mayo, Ida Lupino, Joan Crawford, etc.... shainablue1 Posted February 5, 2005 Share Posted February 5, 2005 Well, I am girl-ish,(26), and I LOVE gangster films! I love the old ones from the 30's best, Cagney especially. Some of their lines in those movies were so clever! It may have something to do with the good girl attracted to bad boy thing (I dunno if there is something psychological about that really- but it's works for me anyway in those movies! ) My fave is also Godfather 1&2, Michael is hot. I follow that movie better than any man I know, I was always explaining it to my husband, brother-in-law, and so forth, so I like the story as well as the men! Love love love love gangster flicks...I went out and bought the new Warner Brothers set the day it was released, and no matter how many times I've seen Little Caesar, I can still watch it again and again and still get the same thrill I had when I viewed it the first time. I think it is the good vs. evil, wanting goodness to win. I think you have plenty of room here for a great paper. The way the films have changed over the years, from the gangster movies of the early years where gangsters were bad guys, to the Godfather, The Last Don, Casino...mob movies where the bad guys were glamorized and we loved those bad characters. My husband and I just had this discussion, he isn't big on mob movies but loves the old gangster, Cagney ones. I just ordered one of the most over the top movies Bella Mafia...it's like junk food or bad candy, you know it's not good for you but you just can't help it. That was one that the women ran the mob, something that apparently is finally actually happening in real life. In the long run I don't know if it is really about good vs. evil as it is about wanting to have the control to put things right.
