ginnyfan
I've seen Evelyn in both SHOOT FIRST and THE PROWLER this year and really liked her in both. She was certainly more comfortable in SHOOT FIRST than her co-star Joel McCrea. THE PROWLER was quite good until it kind of went off the rails in the last 20 minutes. The chemistry between Keyes and Van Heflin was definitely there, though.
TopBilled
So glad you commented on Miss Keyes. I realized this morning as I put the post about her together that she is one of those that I secretly like. I don't shout from the rooftops saying I am an Evelyn Keyes junkie, but yeah, I do need my fix of her from time to time. It looks like, tracing her filmography, that she was under contract with Paramount where she did bit parts and B-films (around the same time Weidler was there) then she went to Columbia. Harry Cohn believed in her, and after one assignment at Columbia, she was quickly promoted to leading lady where she stayed for the next ten years. She has a level of focus and cleverness about acting that I think is very fascinating to watch. After she left Columbia, she freelanced. THE PROWLER is one of those jobs, and some of her later stuff is just as good. She is truly terrific as an actress who gets mixed up in murder and John Payne's business in 99 RIVER STREET, a very atmospheric film noir. Recently I watched her in TOP OF THE WORLD on Netflix streaming. This was her last starring role, before she high-tailed it out of Hollywood and traveled the globe (she had many homes around the world and lived an exciting life off-screen). I also like ONE BIG AFFAIR, which is offered at Netflix streaming, too. She and Dennis O'Keefe wind up on a road trip in Mexico. It's a very amusing rom-com, filmed entirely on location. It definitely feels influenced by John Huston, who was Miss Keyes' husband for a time.
ginnyfan
I'm also kind of a Payne junkie, so I'm sure I'd love 99 RIVER STREET. Before this Weidler stuff started, I usually turned on TCM for noir and westerns.
TopBilled
I like John Payne, too. Musicals, some very fine film noir...a truly versatile actor. 99 RIVER STREET aired on TCM a few years ago but hasn't been seen since. Hopefully, it will return to the channel's airwaves in the future.

MelissaW.
Having been unexpectedly and totally swept off my feet by a young Joseph Schildkraut in Orphans of the Storm on Wednesday, I'd like to lobby to see more of his early work. I had no idea he could be so intensely romantic! (Though I always think Ann Dvorak is rather an idiot to choose straightforwardly dull John Wayne over Schildkraut in Flame of the Barbary Coast.)
