I wanted to explain the process I go through for this thread, because it is a popular thread and I want to make it clear I honor all kinds of classic film fans here. First, one thing I do NOT do: I do not schedule artists according to birthdays. Why not? Well, I feel it is a bit predictable if I do that, and what happens when there are ten stars with the same birthday and all these other days that nobody famous was born on? Second, I do not pick performers according to the TCM schedule, since we know the schedules are apt to change at a moment's notice. Here is what I do, though: I try to include stars from each of the major studios, and I try to include one star who was a key player in poverty row productions. I try to include at least one European star and a star born in Canada. I try to include at least one character actor. I try to include an animal performer or else a popular fictional character (in December, Santa gets a day). I try to include at least one or two stars from the 1970s or 1980s or later. I try to include a child star. I try to include either an African American performer or a Hispanic performer, if not both. I always do a few special days (where a classic star is identified with a pop-culture character). And I try to include someone who made mostly just talkies. I only focus on the sound era, so sometimes a silent star whose career did extend into the talkies and beyond will be included. As you can see, it is a very careful process. But I think because I am trying to appeal to all classic film fans, that this is a reason the thread continues to be successful. I hope you will all be pleased with the selections for December...!
