ginnyfan
Jumping back a day, I just watched a couple of those Dix films from your list that TCM showed recently. NO MARRIAGE TIES, like a lot of the pre codes, was really ahead of its time. It's almost like the code put Hollywood back in time about 50 years. PUBLIC DEFENDER was just fun. It seemed that with a lesser star it could have been a serial.
TopBilled
I agree that the code was detrimental in many ways to the art of motion pictures. It's too bad they could not have devised a ratings system in 1934. If so, perhaps our film heritage would have been that much richer. Stories like KINGS ROW and FOREVER AMBER would not have been diluted. As for Mr. Dix, I happen to like SKY GIANT a lot, and for some reason, RENO is a particular favorite of mine-- it is very conservative in tone and argues against divorce.
