slaytonf
Largely overlooked in favor of his more celebrated films (8 1/2, La Strada, La Dolce Vita), but not because it is any the less magnificent. It is a wonderful and wrenching tale, unflinching, even brutal; that perhaps being the reason for its lower profile. Its a favorite tale in film, told and retold in many variations, but Fellini alone manages to treat it without conventions or sentimentality. Giulietta Masina evinces herself as one of the great actresses in her portrayal of the hopeful and tragic prostitute. She plays it simply, honestly, yet with just one of her self-effacing half-smiles she can charm us and captivate us more powerfully than any pyrotechnics from another. Every morning when it wakes up, the human race should clap its hands and celebrate that such an actress was given to it for its entertainment and elevation. OtisCriblecoblis
Semi-spoiler An excellent film and truly moving. If you've seen it, you certainly won't forget it. It did not have the showmanship and reputation of his better known films, but it's one of my favorites, especially the finale of the long walk along the road. Wonderful all around. ValentineXavier
*NoC* is definitely one of my favorite Fellini films. My very favorite in *Juliet of the Spirits*.
LonesomePolecat
Haven't seen this since college. Love it. So glad to be able to see it again. Beautiful filmmaking. Although the first time I didn't realize til the middle of it that this is the source material for the musical Sweet Charity. This film is better of course. Just thought I'd mention it. JefCostello
Really good film, but I wouldn't say it's overlooked. It's regarded as one of Fellini's better films. I personally rank it 5th behind La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, La Strada and Amarcord. If you think it should be ranked above some of those films, than that's a different story. filmlover
I wouldn't say it is forgotten, either. Not as long as we have "Sweet Charity", because then we remember the original.
