aged-in-wood
CSI Miami? Really, they've resorted to showing reruns of csi. I was pretty young in the 90's so I didn't know that much about AMC, but what I did know is that that was the channel to watch to see great films. Actual american movie classics. Nowadays.....well lets just say I don't think Catwoman and Pinata Survival Island are american movie classics. What the heck happened to this channel to make them sell out so much. brackenhe
Just my opinion, but I do know at some point about 10-12 years ago, they were purchased by some company (I don't know the particulars at the moment) and started showing some commercials. Then, they probably decided they wouldn't try to compete with TCM so they decided to compete with TNT. Next thing you'll see is some sporting events on AMC. ThelmaTodd
For a movie channel to adopt commercials is part of a slippery slope to mass market commercialisation driven by profit maximisation.Such maximisation then invariably influences content, as making the most advertising dollar demands that you broadcast whatever pabulum the general public wants, which may or may not be movies. Once you abandon a commercial free format, you end up with whatever "sells", and Joan Crawford and Clark Gable can go into the dustbin in order to make room for "Snooki" other passions "de jeure". This is why I sent a handwritten Christmas card to Time Warner CEO Jeffery Bewkes, giving him heartfelt thanks for keeping TCM true to Ted Turner's original vision. Mind you, he need not do this if he decided not to; with but one stroke of his pen he can change TCM overnight and make it go down the "AMC road"! The fact that this is not happening reflects very, very well on him and the Time Warner organisation!

I think the channel would like everyone to forget that they ever had classic film preservation and exhibition as a mission and just accept the garbage that they show now. ThelmaTodd
Hi krieger, But of course. Dedication to the sale of commercials and their lucrative revenue has made many a cable channel water down, modify or completely abandon their original mission. PS: AMC does have one unvarying constant throughout their format changes, and that's an obsession with John Wayne films, which seems to function as their "magnetic north"! I like that, well done Thelma Todd. His office didn't acknowledge you, did they? Too bad Westchester is chock-a-block with corrupt local politicians who take huge payouts from FIOS and Cablevision, and won't let Time Warner in as another choice for cable. I know the owner of AMC/Cablevision owns the Knicks and is as crooked as the day is long, and I remember reading that the owner of FIOS is a close corrupt second, but I can't speak to Time Warner - where are they on the crooked-o-meter, Thelma, do you know? Your choice of terms like "crooked" can have ramifications on your account here - especailly when speaking about the parent company that owns this website. (See the footer at the bottom of the page.) For weeks now everyone has read your personal feelings on the practices of cable systems and media companies. You're unhappy. We get it. But lately your language has risen to a level that implies dishonesty and criminality. Such statements are only appropriate coming from a DA's office. They are definitely not appropriate in the forums of TCM. Just something to consider.... Kyle In Hollywood

That is what was a large part of the AMC library before 2002. You could almost run a classic film channel on that library alone. Calvininme, that has been a long-time dream of mine! It would be SO radical for those libraries to receive the same treatment as Turner did for WB, RKO and MGM! If I was a billionaire...it would be done! ThelmaTodd
Hi calvinme! I agree that would be sweeter than honey. Unfortunately, that's probably about what it would take, a hopped up billionaire to get those films away from Universal and out of limbo! It's out of the hands of ordinary people to decide the fate of these properties. I can't help but wonder what "Uncle" Carl Laemmle would think of it all. markfp2
Is that what they're doing know? I haven't watched AMC since they went commercial so I didn't know. I hate to say it, but from a business standpoint it's been a huge success for them. The channel is making tons of money and getting high ratings and I think they've even won an Emmy for two. Too bad, I always hope the change would have been a failure.

Mark, Yeah, they are showing reruns of *CSI: Miami*. As for the Emmys, *Mad Men* has won 4 for Best Drama and *Breaking Bad's* Brian Cranston has been the Best Actor winner for the last three years and Aaron Paul has one Best Supporting Actor once. So, their Original Dramas are doing well.

I know the DVDs of their original series have sold well. Why wouldn't they? If you could watch a season in a weekend on DVD versus sitting through their constant commercial interruptions strung out over months at a time I know what I would do. I've heard that the movie portion of AMC's programming has polled poorly in the ratings since they are basically in competition with HBO/Showtime which shows films uncut and commercial free. That is probably why they have started showing syndicated series such as CSI Miami.

JakeHolman
What's this antipathy to AMC? They have been long gone with a different business model than TCM. I like to go over and watch AMC from time-to-time. I know I am not one of those pseudo intellectuals who would never be caught there watching anything from that channel. Betcha you do though? In the past, I watched Patton and The Searchers on their channel when no one else showed it. Oh, but with commercials. Right now, AMC is highlighting Steven Seagal and I love it. Love to see him kick some butt and take names. Jake in the Heartland
brackenhe
I'll be honest. The only time I watch AMC is when one of the first 2 Godfather films comes on, because they are the only channel that has rights to it. However, it's quite frustrating since they show so many commercials that a movie that's almost 4 hours anyway ends up tying up 5 hours of your time. And it's severely edited. Other than that, I don't really care for the type of action films that makes up most of their programming. I don't watch TNT either.
Sepiatone
I started a thread about this a couple of weeks ago. Everything all have been saying is true(except for the "crooked" part. I don't want to get into that). I'll admit their original programs are doing well, and are quite good. But their movie presentations are dissappointing. They have strayed far off their original path. FloydDBarber
The Green Mile is 189 minutes and was shown on AMC in a time slot that was much shorter than 189 minutes. How much of this 189 minute film do you think the viewer actually saw? I will never watch AMC again after they butchered this film.

cinemanut
I only watch AMC when they show something TCM doesn't. A couple weeks ago AMC showed Wellman's Yellow Sky with Gregory Peck. I recorded it on my DVR and edited the commercials. So now when I wanna watch it I don't have to put up with annoying interruptions every 8-10 minutes.
