RazorX
What's the proper aspect ratio for On The Waterfront? The DVD is in 1.33:1 and imdb lists 1.37:1 and 1:85.1. I remember reading that as a 1954 film it was on the cusp of the transition from the Academy ratio and that because it was in black and white and shot in 1.37:1, some of the major studios didn't want it. TCM is showing it now in 1.85:1. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of headroom in some of the shots, so it does appear that it's been matted down to look like a widescreen film. Does anyone know for sure? Edited by: RazorX on Feb 11, 2012 2:30 PM
Sprocket_Man
It was shot flat 1.37, and is supposed to be hard-matted to 1.85 for theatrical exhibition. Nevertheless, there is, as they say, many a slip 'twixt the cup and the lip. If the matting is applied improperly, it can retain too much at the bottom of the frame, at the expense of the top. RazorX
I wonder why they haven't released a widescreen version on DVD.
