I definitely was not happy with the 31 Days of Oscar schedule. I was beginning to lose faith in our TCM programmers!

But I think May is looking very good. It will tie with September of last year, in terms of rare films being screened and fans wishes being honored.

I also think it is good that they are screening classics of the 1980s. Sally Field has long deserved a primetime salute.

*" Is this the TCM premier of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil?"* - lanceroten

Yes, it will be a premiere.

But it is not worth going out of your way to see - especially if you've read the book. All the charm and quirkiness of the book is missing. Eastwood's film is a bad "Lifetime" movie.

The whole evening is made up of "Based on a true story" films. Or even "True Crime" stories for that one night, so far. I wonder if that is the monthly Spotlight for May? Kinda cool, if it is.

There were five nights for Wm Powell in December. I think it depends on the number of films that are available and of course, the popularity of the featured artist.

We definitely should be grateful that they are giving fans five evenings of Joel McCrea.

I am impressed with the scope of the selections, showcasing key aspects of his career in a multitude of genres. I am really looking forward to seeing 1929's DYNAMITE. It is directed by Cecil DeMille, who also directed the actor in 1939's UNION PACIFIC.

Agree with you. Saw Midnight/Good Evil back in 1998. And it's not one of Eastwood's better efforts. Him directing, and John Cusack and Kevin Spacey starring I remember hoping for much better.

I did and was quite pleased about it. As *Mark* would say, May is going to be groovy.

I've never been a big McCrea fan, but after seeing all these early 30's listings, I'm now beginning to think that lack of exposure has been my main problem with him, and I'm looking forward to being converted. Just hope there aren't too many westerns in there.

Overall, this is looking like the best month since August's SUTS with Gabin, Dvorak and Chaney----and brother, after a whole month of Doris Day are we ever going to need it!

And if Eugenia H is out there, did you notice this seldom-seen Stanwyck? This may not be a TCM premiere, but it'll be a premiere for me:

Hi Andy,

Yep, I have a recording of *Gambling Lady*. :) I think it's more of a Stanwyck film than a McCrea film, but I like Joel in this and I love him as a leading man with her. My favorite McCrea-Stanwyck teaming is *Internes Can't Take Money*, though I guess I should see *Union Pacific* again. I saw it once but kept getting distracted by Stanwyck's rendition of an Irish accent (not great).

Thanks for posting these parts of the schedule. In addition to the Joel McCrea films, I'm happy to see *Rocco and His Brothers* listed, for this film is not generally available on DVD. If you don't know *The Onion Field* (1979), this deals with the anguish felt by a policeman (John Savage) whose partner (Ted Danson, in one of his early roles) has been killed by a thug (James Woods) and his buddy (Franklin Seale). Woods is brilliant, and, need I add, scary and creepy, in the role that brought him lots of attention. Priscilla Pointer is excellent as Ted Danson's mother. This is a real-life police drama where the system doesn't work as well as it should.

I'm just filling in the schedule using the information from other helpful posters and some more stuff I picked up since the first time I posted this.

About 75% of the schedule is now filled in.

One pattern that has emerged is that every Thursday in May appears to be dedicated to crime dramas.

Thanks for everyone who has helped fill in the blanks so far.

The Common Law (1931) is set for May 17 at 9:30 am.

I'm loving all the Joel McCrea action - especially the hard-to-come-by pre-codes! Just wish Girls About Town (1931) was included, too (I'm selfish like that ;) ). No, actually it'll be a busy month for me as is.

Are there any less-common McCrea films I should be sure not to miss? I'm grateful for another go at Woman Chases Man (DVD-R didn't play nice last time it aired X-( ). It's a delightful little screwball romp, for those who haven't seen it.

Perhaps if I had read the book, I would agree with you and Lanceroten. But, I haven't, and don't. I enjoyed the film a lot. Definitely one of my favorite Kevin Spacey films. But, I know it was on cable recently, MGMHD, perhaps.

I'm looking forward to Joel Mc's films. There are several I haven't seen.

I agree about the comments here about *Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil*. It's one of those examples of how a book sometimes does not translate well into a film, at least not the way Eastwood did it ( and I usually like Clint Eastwood's films.)

The book itself was fun to read, especially the first half, all about Savannah and its quirky inhabitants. But then, I'm prejudiced, because Savannah is one of my favourite cities.
