Danny59
I don't remember when or where I saw this movie, but I would love to find it somewhere. I don't recall who was in it, but it's a B&W made I would guess in the 40's. It starts with this bum who was taken off the street and directed to vote for mayor in several different precincts. It had a definite Chicago flavor to it. Eventually he meets the mayor who asks him, "Don't you know you're only supposed to vote once?" The mayor takes him under his wing. He wakes up in a hotel room with a not-so-beautiful woman and remarks, "Well that's it, we're married." He buys her a necklace the size of a chandalier and makes a gagging sound as he remarks something to the effect of, "It's to enhance your looks." It's one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen in a movie. The crooked mayor eventually asks the man if he wants to run for reform mayor. This is what I remember about it. Anyone have a clue? Thanks in advance.
Jezebel38
I believe you're thinking of THE GREAT MCGINTY (1940). http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/76901/The-Great-McGinty/

ValentineXavier
That's my favorite Preston Sturges film. I wish TCM would run it again.
