mvozus
I got a chance to watch the newly released DVD of "Leave Her To Heaven," last night. I must say, the restoration was brilliant. The special features has a restoration comparison and the color difference between the original and the restored version is astounding. Another Gene Tierney classic, ''Laura" is coming out on DVD mid March and it's stacked with special features. The timing of these releases are perfect. My book on Gene Tierney, authorized by her daughter, will be released in a couple of weeks time. Both DVD's and my book, "Gene Tierney: A Biography" are now available at Amazon.com. ayresorchids
Can anyone tell me whether parts of the "Leave Her to Heaven" score were ever used in another film? It almost seems like you hear a bit of it at the end of "All About Eve."
neilelmhr
Michelle: Sounds interesting. Just wondering whether you saw the in depth article done on GENE TIERNEY for CLASSIC IMAGES, February 2004. It drew a very favorable response from readers.
mvozus
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did see that Classic Images article. It was very well written. In fact, The Globe magazine will be featuring a story on Gene and my upcoming book in about three weeks time. Keep an eye out for it! neilelmhr
Thanks, Michelle. As a matter of fact, I wrote the article and was hoping you'd seen it. I've had a number of articles published by Classic Images and Films of the Golden Age magazine. Looking forward to hearing more about your book. vecchiolarry
Hi Everyone, I remember seeing this movie on TV years ago and all of us talking about it at work. Gene Tierney is the most evil, self-centred **** in film history in it and she's good. So good that she was nominated for an Oscar as best Actress of 1945. But, she lost to Joan Crawford; I don't think she was ever nominated again, was she? I will look for your book at the end of the month at my local book store. brackenhe
I'm going to admit something here. I've never seen Laura or Leave Her to Heaven. Is that wrong of me, because I watch just about anything? But Tierney leaves me cold. I rented one of her first movie, The Shanghai Gesture, and she was just horrible in that movie. Maybe I should give her another chance in one of these more famous movies, no?
classicsfan1119
Yes, Helen, you should watch more Gene Tierney movies, especially the two being discussed in this thread. When I first started watching TCM's Classics which included dozens Classic Stars we talk about here, I (like you) had "maybe" previously seen just one movie a particular star was in, and I (also like you) fell into the mistake...BIG MISTAKE...of short-sightedly judging that star based on just that one movie. So, yeah...watch more of her movies, and the much better ones she made after "The Shanghai Gesture" and give her another chance. She really was one of the best! ;)ML
mvozus
Hi Everyone - Well, Neil, as I said, your article on Gene was really well done. I enjoyed it very much. It's unfortunate, but first impressions do have a lasting effect, in life and on film. "The Shanghai Gesture" was not a great film and the random selection of a mediocre film starring Gene Tierney has definitely helped form your opinion. You must see, "Leave Her To Heaven," she plays a psychotic, possessive wife who'll stop at nothing to keep the man she loves all to herself. Gene was nominated for an Academy Award for this role (yes, it was her one and only nomination) but Joan Crawford won for "Mildred Pierce." "Laura" is another "must see," as is "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" and "The Razor's Edge." Give her another chance..... Best wishes - Michelle Vogel PS: TCM currently have "Gene Tierney: A Biography" advertised in their "press release" section on this site.
neilelmhr
Thanks, Michelle, glad you liked the article. Although I loved Gene Tierney in LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN, I think she was even more authentic in THE RAZOR'S EDGE, especially during that final confrontation with Tyrone Power where the truth comes out about her involvement in Sophie's death. I thought she and Clifton Webb gave the two most impressive performances in the whole film. Don't have the LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN DVD yet, but intend to get it soon. It's a treat for the technicolor photography and general excellence of the whole cast. Neil
feaito
I have to disagree concerning "The Shanghai Gesture"; maybe Gene Tierney hadn't fully developed into the good actress she became later, but I liked her in that movie, as the spoiled rich girl who is "caught under the spell" of gambling, the casino, decadence, Orient, Victor Mature, etc...eventually causing her "perdition". I loved Von Sternberg's decadent and baroque mis?-en-scene, and Walter Huston's and Ona Munson's strong performances in that film...sure it's a "fantasy" world, just like the "universes" he created to surround Dietrich in the pictures in which he directed her, but nonetheless enthralling. Just my opinion. I agree that Tierney's best performances were in "Leave Her to Heaven" (great film), "Razor's Edge", "Ghost and Mrs. Muir" and "Laura"...but I've liked her in almost everything I've seen her in, from "Plymouth Adventure" to "The Egyptian", and beyond...even as a south seas native in "Son of Fury" . brackenhe
The reason I rented The Shanghai Gesture is because I search my DVD rental club for Walter Huston movies, and that came up. The plot sounded interesting so I rented it. So maybe I'll rent Leave Her To Heaven because I have heard so much about Tierney's performance. But boy was she bad in The Shanghai Gesture. There was just something missing from her acting. She seemed too shrill or something. Was she from the South, because she sure did seem to have a Southern accent in that movie.
