Andrew Sarris in Perspective

Recommended Posts

One of the few influential critics of his day, Sarris brought auteurism to America after the likes of Godard and Truffaut laid the groundwork in Europe in the 50's. Without Sarris, I dare say, the likes of Scorsese, Coppola, Spielberg, etc. would not have the reputation they have today. He made auteurism fashionable. Read ' The American Cinema ' a seminal work from the 1960's and ' You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet ', both must-reads for any buff or scholar of film. RIP, Mr Sarris. And condolences to his widow, fellow film critic and former TCM Essential host, Molly Haskell.
