1864.A mysterious MR Benton(Van Heflin)arrives in Saint Albans,Vermont.Pretending to be a Canadian buisnessman he rents a room in a boardinghouse owned by Kathy Bishop(Anne Bancroft)a widow.Living with her is her young son,Larry(Tommy Rettig).

 

 

 

 

 

 

In charge of the town is crippled Union Officer,Lionel Foster(Richard Boone)Foster and Benton take an instant dislike to each other.Fosters dislike for Benton grows when Kathy and Benton fall for each other.

 

 

 

 

 

 

MR Benton is a Union hating,high ranking Confederate officer who has orders to attack the town,rob the three banks,and get the loot back to nueutral Canada where it will go the Confederacy.Slowly,Bentons men(Lee Marvin,Peter Graves,Claude Akins,etc)are drifting into town.
