Hi TCM friends, I've just become interested in silent films could someone please make some suggestions where I should start I know nothing about them. I was told that I should start out with something short and simple sense it will be my first film.(i)

It really depends on what types of films you like.

Do you like comedies?

I would suggest some shorts like *One Week* or *Cops* by Buster Keaton,

or Chaplin's *The Rink*.

If you like Laurel and Hardy, I would recommend *Big Business* .

Maybe someone can suggest a Harold Lloyd short....

I think *Two Arabian Knights* is a full length buddy picture you might enjoy.

Other comic full length films you might start with are:

*Modern Times*

*City Lights*

*The Gold Rush*

*Steamboat Bill, Jr.*

*Our Hospitality*

*Sherlock Jr.*

*Dr. Jack*

*Girl Shy*

*Safety Last*

If you aren't a physical comedy fan, then a few dramas that I think might be good to start with are:

*Flesh and the Devil*

*The Crowd*

*The Racket*

*A Woman of Paris*

Adventure/ Fantasy

*The Thief of Baghdad*

*He Who Gets Slapped*

*The Phantom of the Opera*

*The Big Parade*

*The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse*

I don't want to over whelm you with choices, perhaps you could tell us which films you like in the sound era.

Thank you so much Jack I'll dive in! I think our start with a comedy. The films I enjoy in the sound era like Dr. Zhivago would be a bit to much for a first time silent film buff.

I'm so glad you are taking an interest in silent pictures! Good luck, and if you aren't thrilled with the first one you watch, keep trying new ones... there are so many different types of silents, you will find a niche that you like.

I imagine you will eventually love silent film, if you are a fan of Dr Zhivago, silents can be very romantic and visually beautiful in the same way.
