Jamie
Have any of the TCMers here seen Little Nellie Kelly? I watched it and taped it on Saint Pat's Day and, although I loved the movie altogher, I thought it was extremely sad. That was my first time seeing a) Judy's character die and seeing her "pregnant". She and George Murphy work so well together! ~~~ Anyone seen Babes On Broadway? Haven't seen it yet.
brackenhe
I've seen both and I have to say that for a "small" movie that Little Nellie Kelly was rather good. But I have to say she didn't look very pregnant because back then I guess they weren't allowed to show someone pregnant. Usually women faint or are light-headed to indicate they're pregnant but no belly--wouldn't that be great? I've also seen Babes on Broadway and it's okay. But there is a blackface number so be aware of that, if that sort of thing offends you.
richardny4me
I missed the film this week but I have a copy of it so maybe I will watch it, Judy is wonderful in it and her version of "A Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow" has always been my favorite highlight. When I saw MILLION DOLLAR BABY in the theater a few months ago, I think I might be the only person who knew what the translation of Clint Eastwood's "Mo Kushna" (sp) name for Hilary Swank meant ONLY because Garland sings those words in that song, LOL. Incidentally, that film is the only film she made in which a character she plays actually dies on screen.
Jamie
Great, Thanks, Richard! That is funny how Million Dollar Baby had a character like that. (I haven't yet seen that movie.) Thanks!
Jamie
Thanks, Brackenhe! Yes, you are right. Movies did not allow women to show pregenacy on the screen. It's just the same as the men and women had to wear hats whenever they went outside. But, hey, gotta give Judy credit for the "light-headedness"! ~Jamie
bhryun
One interesting thing about this film is the appearance of baritone Douglas MacPhail, kind of a junior Nelson Eddy - in voice and manner. A very interesting and sad tale - he has mostly singing appearances (SWEETHEARTS, BROADWAY MELODY (introducing "I Concentrate on You") and a few acting roles, most memorably BABES IN ARMS and this. He apparently committed suicide in 1942 or 1943 by drinking poison. Yuck - what a way to go.
