bhryun
I thought this might be a fun discussion and excuse me if it's been done recently - I'm new to the boards. What classic movies come to your mind when you think about endings that just left you "hanging", wondering or just feeling completely "unsatisified?" I know the first time I watched "GWTW" I really felt a bit "wanting" but I have grown to appreciate the ending more with each subsequent viewing. deeanddaisy666
I Married A Doctor, with Pat O'Brien -- the ending was sooooooooooooooo chauvinistic it made my teeth hurt.
path40a
You said stoney, I've actually written a review for that one too;-) BTW, if you want to see something really chauvinistic, check out "Men are Such Fools (1938)" with Wayne Morris and Priscilla Lane, if you dare! moviejoe79
The ending to "New York, New York" left me hanging. Deniro and Liza are backstage in Liza's dressing room after she's just finished singing the title song, and they decide they're going to meet up in a few minutes on a corner. But, he waits there, and she starts to go and then stops and turns around. He also walks away, and that's it. Now, what leaves me hanging is this - Did SHE just decide to not go, and did he realize this and walk away, OR did they BOTH decide not to meet, and both walk away. This coin toss ending has always puzzled me. And you know, as much as I love Scorsese's movies, I can't understand why he did the ending this way on this one. For over three hours he focuses on the lives of these two people, and then just leaves you hanging in the end - who walked away from who, or did they both walk away? bhryun
Oh yes, Roman Holiday! That one did make you say over and over again "take her, take her!"
richardny4me
TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME just ended with them breaking character and a song about Kelly getting Williams or something like that. They did not even try to give it an ending.....I know it was an MGM musical, but really. I like the idea of this thread by the way, I just wish I could remember more examples. therealfuster
Welcome to the boards! Well, I must admit that I am never dissatisfied by an ending. Oh, except for one movie..."The Magnificent Ambersons". That one, due to the studio interference with Welles, just ends so abruptly that it bothers me. But, it is not the content of the ending but the way it is filmed that irks me, since you can tell they don't know where to fade out to make it look right. Frankly, I like all the movies that don't really end, and that everyone else hates. I just watched the new dvd of Antonioni's "L'Eclisse" and just adored the way the end did not really end, and the beginning of the film was really about an end. I'm weird, but I like open-ended endings on film, I guess...
katyscar11ett
Not a classic movie - but the one that came immediately to mind is a Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford movie called The Devil's Own. I can't ever remember being so POed at a movie. I walked around the house cussing after it was over. LOL I was mad at Harrison Ford for days. Do I take movies too seriously? Only a little. :-)
katyscar11ett
Just saw one the other day - White Banners with my favorite, Claude Rains. :-) Good movie but I hate those sad old endings about the "bad bad girl" losing everything. As also in Stella Dallas (also good movie), etc. "They" could have made their point without totally destroying the women in these movies. Whatcha think? bhryun
It's a little off topic, but I couldn't help but think of my "kid" sister on this (she is now in her mid 40s). In the 1980s, there was a theatrical re-release of Gone with the Wind, and she left at the intermission, not knowing there was a good hour + left to the movie. So for years, she thought that GWTW ended with Scarlet's "As God as my witness, I will never be hungry again...." speach. I would imagine that wasn't very satisfying.
