TomJH
A brief photographic history of the guilty pleasure male viewers have derived from watching ladies in exotic adventures, of either the prehistoric or science fiction kind. The following is provided strictly for historical educational purposes: Carole Landis as a fetching cave woman in One Million B.C. Maria Montez in Arabian Night, an Arabian variation Dorothy Lamour in Aloma of the South Seas, a Polynesian variation Laurette Luez in Prehistoric Women Cat Women of the Moon, a sci fi variation Abbott and Costello Go To Mars. By the way, they went to Venus. Doesn't matter, the message was still the same: Bring on the exotic women! Back to the cave woman days once again and perhaps the utlimate: Raquel Welch in a fur bikini in One Million Years B.C., one of the most reproduced images in movie history. Dargo2
Ya know Tom, your mentioning of Laurette Luez in this thread (as I stated earlier an actress of which I hadn't been aware of earlier) and of whom you seem fascinated by, once again brought to my mind an idea for a thread I've been kickin' around for quite a while now. Ya see, every day like I'm sure a lot of other TCM members do around here, I check on Joe's(mongo's) terrific "Candid 2" thread to see which actor and actress's birthday it is for the day. And, often times included in those are little known or remembered actors and actresses. AND, often times when I run across a beautiful actress who I had little or no knowledge of beforehand but who strikes a chord with me(basically I'm sayin' I found them REALLY HOT lookin'), I will google their name to find out more about them. And so I was thinkin' it might be cool to start a thread where our membership can add the name and maybe their likeness to the thread of those actors and actresses whenever they run across one previously little known of or remembered which "strikes a chord" within them. Maybe with a thread title of, say, "Newly Rediscovered"? (...and once again, I'm NOT talkin' about puttin' people in it like, say, John Garfield..LORI !!!) TomJH
That's actually a pretty decent idea, Dargo. A thread that will be a tribute to those players that never really quite made it in films but we feel should still be remembered, perhaps with a picture and a little biographical information thrown in, as well. Mongo does a great job, of course, but he doesn't specialize in the small players. I guess you know who my first entry will be. It's your idea, Dargo, old boy. I leave it up to you to do the kick off, if you're of a mind to. Good thing you mentioned the fact that John Garfield doesn't qualify. I'm pretty sure Lori was getting her typing fingers all warmed up as she read your post.
Daria
MST3K is a guilty pleasure of mine too. It's a great commentary on pop culture.
willbefree25
Then I guess my future husband Warren William is out too? Tom, I wish I had a better memory, and if I didn't make a record of two, I would never remember them. There are so many whose faces flash by us when we see movies we've never seen before on TCM, but thankfully, I made a note of both Marian Marsh and Evelyn Brent, two lovely ladies who deserved more. Dargo2
Nope, sorry willbe, but "your future husband" here... ...WHOOPS..sorry...I mean here... ...wouldn't "qualify" in my soon-to-debut "Newly Rediscovered" thread. (...nope, the dude would be too well known...well, AT LEAST by the demographic around HERE, anyway)
Dargo2
Thought ACTUALLY now that I've thought a little more about this, I suppose there COULD eventually become some "newbies" to this website who hasn't ever watched the guy(I'm talkin' about Snidely...WHOOPS AGAIN, I meant Warren here) in anything before, and so I suppose in a case such as this, Snide...err...WARREN could maybe be included in the future, eh?! (...though Lori, IF you're out there and you're readin' this, that would STILL not include Mr. Garfield...sorry)
laffite
I wished I loved Johnny Guitar but instead I couldn't even get through it. It would make for a wonderful guilty pleasure. May I should have a guilty pleasure for hating it. But because I hate it, it can't be a pleasure. I feel I have such great taste that I can't have a guilty pleasure for a bad movie since I wouldn't feel likely to derive any pleasure from it. Isn't that insufferable? I hope a true blue guilty pleasure in movies or an actor will come to me unawares even if it comes in the middle of the night. I hope Tom doesn't mind the resurrection. The subject of guilty pleasures came up on another thread and I thought to search for a one of several that have come and gone over the years on the Board. On behalf of the OP, may I ask if anyone has a feel for guilty pleasures? --

Tikisoo
OK, forgive me for not reading the entire thread.... ...but I will admit my guilty pleasure IS porn. I have a DVD of vintage porn trailers and every once in awhile throw it on for fun. Many people are shocked to see "XXX" on my shelf, but it's one of my favorite "fillers" to watch after a movie, especially to unwind after an intense horror movie. I don't know much about modern porn, but these 70's & 80's trailers have great hairdos, stilted line reading, funny clothing & even funnier situations-you can't imagine some of the locations used. And I swear the sound "effects" are the same ones used over & over. Some of the titles are a scream too: DEBBIE DOES DALLAS meaning the entire city. I like porn so much I almost named my dog Porno.
TomJH
In taking a quick survey of this four year old thread of mine I was struck by the contributions of the Movie Professor, a long time show business participant (once a press agent for Ed Sullivan, among others) who had some wonderful insider anecdotes about the industry. I was also struck by the MP's generosity, too. After I made an inquiry to him about a little remembered bit player beauty called Laurette Luez, he responded with a lengthy and sympathetic critique of perhaps where she had gone wrong in her career. He even saw the lady once, a stunning beauty in the Coconut Grove in 1956. Here's a tiny bit of what he wrote about her: She’s a good example of someone who simply stays around the business, hoping and praying that something good will pop up, while all along, time and age mounts up against you. Truth is that Luze was just one of those quick flashes that come and go in the movie business of old Hollywood. It’s a typical story of a lovely girl with hopes and a big dream of becoming famous, while not understanding or able to face up to the process of what it takes to reach a goal that for the most part is and will always remain a tremendous gamble. I encourage anyone who may be interested to take a look at the Movie Professor's writeup on the actress. He wrote in on Sept 2, 2012. He's very diplomatic, I notice, in stating that she tried to sleep her way to fame to disastrous results in a town legendary for its casting couches. The MP, whom I'm sure many old timers here will still recall, stopped posting on these boards the day after he did his writeup here on Ms Luez. He was one of the class acts of these boards and I miss his insightful observations. We were lucky to have him when we did.
laffite
I read the post by MovieProfessor and enjoyed very much. You know, guilty pleasures are more or less a subjective choice. But if there's such a thing as a generic guilty pleasure, a likely candidate would be Torch Song (I would think). Some folks laugh out loud and not necessarily in a bemused way. I sort of like the film too. I note that MP complimented Joan on her dancing, reminding me of an RO intro (years ago) where he noted good naturedly that "those feet never got that high off the ground." I would like to see that intro again. As I recall, it came across as if RO thought it was indeed a guilty pleasure, though he didn't mention the term. He was gently critical. There were benevolent nods and winks throughout, always with a smile (not a smirk) I recall MP from back then and was consistently amazed at his posts. I hope he didn't quit the board due to ill health.

I had communicated with the Movie Professor previously by pm, and he had responded in a most courteous manner. After his disappearance I sent him another pm to ask if he was okay but there never was a response.
LawrenceA
I have a DVD of vintage porn trailers and every once in awhile throw it on for fun. I bought a whole set of DVD's from the 42nd Street Forever series that are vintage exploitation trailers and I think the last disc is vintage porn trailers. I haven't watched any of them yet to comment on the quality, though. This isn't by any chance the disc you have?
