edgedrv
WB has announced a box set of Crawford films to be released on June 14. The set includes: HUMORESQUE, POSSESSED (1947) and THE DAMNED DON'T CRY. The remaining two films have already been released on DVD: MILDRED PIERCE and THE WOMEN. This is getting to be a bit annoying of WB to do this to fans. There are so many Crawford films that could have been included: A WOMAN'S FACE, STRANGE CARGO, SUSAN AND GOD or the campy TORCH SONG. Most fans like myself will want the three first time films on DVD so we will purchase the entire box. BTW, DANCING LADY is currently undergoing restoration and will be released next year as part of the CLARK GABLE COLLECTION. For great art work on the Crawford set as well as the BETTE DAVIS set see AMAZON.COM.
coffeedan1927
I think one reason that so many catalog titles are turning up in the new sets is repackaging. Up till June of last year, Warner Home Video released all of their product in snapper cases, which many of their customers have complained about (including me). But starting with the Cary Grant box, their releases have been in standard keepcases. The artwork I've seen for the upcoming Bette Davis and Joan Crawford boxes shows all the films packaged in keepcases. I think that's also why the prices on so many WHV back titles were lowered and the movies sold in two- and three-packs recently -- to get the old product in the old packages off the shelf, and to make way for new product. I blow hot and cold on this issue -- I too think that there are other worthy films that could be included in these sets, yet I'm glad to see the old product in the more convenient keepcases. For those reasons, I think the upcoming Clark Gable set will include MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY as well as DANCING LADY, since it's the only other Gable film WHV has released on DVD besides GONE WITH THE WIND. coffeedan1927
By the way, I think it's interesting that the Bette Davis and Joan Crawford sets are being released on the same day, June 14. Even in death, apparently, the two of them are still slugging it out . . .
moviejoe79
Whoops - I just posted a question about the Crawford set in the WB Online Chat thread. But thanks for answering it! I wanted to know what Crawford films would be included in her set, and what a let down that two of them have been previously released. Coffeedan - You make a very good point about the keepcases, and I think Warners is factoring that as well as MOOLAH into these box sets. Not only will collector's get the keepcases in a nice box, but Warners will get more money for films that are being re-purchased. I for one don't care what kind of a case the movie's in, and I'll just buy the individual titles. I'm surprised to see them releasing "Possessed" from 1947. I LOVE the 1931 version with Gable, and there are SO MANY other worthwhile Crawford films to release, I just don't get it. Perhaps the others need restoration. But "Sadie McKee," "The Bride Wore Red," "A Woman's Face," "Love on the Run," or any of her silent/early sound films would've been great. And it would be nice to see "Our Dancing Daughters," "Our Modern Maidens," and "Our Blushing Brides" all released together.

Snarfie
Okay so now how about some of the ?Our Flappers? movies? Our Dancing Daughters 1928 Our Modern Maidens 1929 Our Blushing Brides 1930 Maybe a couple more early movies of hers to round out the set. She appeared in 23 movies before Our Dancing Daughters in 1928. How many of those have survived I don't know. Some of her early silents/ talkies through like 1931 would be good for inclusion. And of course there's Untamed (1929) and Dance, Fools, Dance (1931).
pintorini
> Okay so now how about some of the ?Our Flappers? > movies? Hilarious! I finally watched The Unknown with Lon Chaney the other night. Went in with low expectations, came out happily surprised. Maybe because even though it's set in a Spanish circus, Joan essentially plays another skinny flapper in it. pintorini
> She looked nothing like a flapper in that movie. Do > you even know what a flapper looks like? Wow ... that was strongly worded. Yes, I know what a flapper looks like. I agree Crawford didn't look like a flapper in The Unknown ... I guess I was thinking more of the spirit of fun she projected in the movie's lighthearted scenes, and the way she moved her body. I meant it in a more or less complimentary way. I really like the attitude Crawford projects in most of her films in the 30s and shortly before.
aftermath
In the 50's Joan Crawford looked like a man in drag! She also talked like and cursed like a man in drag. Those shoulder pads were awesome she looke like Steve Brodie! If you don't believe me look at "Johnny Guitar'. Poor Sterling Hayden he didn't know whether to kiss her or Indian Wrestle with her! pintorini
Yes, The Joan Crawford would definitely make my "favorite drag queen of all time" list. (Which, again, I mean only in the most respectful and complimentary way.) Whenever one is depressed, one can always console oneself by wrapping a scarf around one's head, popping Mildred Pierce into the DVD player, and crying bitterly as Her Joanness toils bravely away for that ungrateful wretch, Veda. Better than Prozac.
timelessjoancrawford
lol I'm sorry I worded that so strongly. I am just used to the imdb boards where people word their arguments quite brutally.
pintorini
No prob ...! We who believe Joan Crawford is "timeless" must unite in the name of The Joan.
