bhryun
Did anyone hear the TCM announcer between features at 11:30PM EDT on the night of April 6 during the "Tonight on TCM" spot? She remarked that The Children's Hour was a "laugh riot" as Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine were accused of having an illicit affair. Could it be that again we are subjected to the inanities of a 'talking-head' with no knowledge of what they are saying or was she just reading a lame script? I don't think many people would describe The Children's Hour as a "laugh riot". Shirley MacLaine's character was so amused at it all that she committed suicide. brackenhe
That reminds me--if I've seen a new movie I usually look it up on IMDB to read reviews. Well, recently TCM showed That Certain Feeling with Melvin Douglas & Merle Oberon. After it was over I logged on to read the review. At the bottom of the page where the films details are posted, IMDB has a selection that states "If you like this movie may we suggest...." Anyway, on the page for That Certain Feeling, which was a wacky comedy, imdb suggested Smash Up, Story of a Woman, which is a tragic story about a woman who becomes an alcoholic. I had to laugh because the subject matter is so different.
venerados
It's probably a mistake. Then again, some people are so uncomfortable with emotion that they can only enjoy melodrama as comedic irony.
hillspan
And did you like "That Uncertain Feeling," brackenhe? I came across it by chance when they showed it a few months ago and loved it: the Hitler references, the Hungarian jokes, the references to "modern art!" And did you catch Burgess Meredith's lines when he and Merle Oberon are waiting to see the shrink? She says he's amusing, and he replies, "oh, I amuse you? I'm a clown?" almost the same lines Joe Pesci says in the beginning of Goodfellas! You have to wonder if Nick Pileggi saw this film ... ha! brackenhe
Yes--I thought it was very funny and after I made my post I realize that I had the name of the movie wrong. LOL Also, after my post I thought that maybe there was a slight connection in the plots--a third party tries to wreck a marriage, one of them is a musician, someone gets drunk--yeah--I can see the commonality.
