wow, really annoyed am I are you with the senseless junk posts innumerable?

This is starting to get on my nerves. I am sure you have all noticed how many garbage posts end up in the General Discussions with almost Japanese Lyric wind poem type titles, and then you click on them, they're recaps of TV episodes for sale on DVD...I suppose.

They annoy me because they move inn-teresting discussions out of the way so we can't see them. Any new or non-frequent posters would see them and think we're all a bunch of twits.

But most of all: *if you are trying to SELL SOMETHING, make a GD cogent point and string two sentences together that MAKE SENSE.* I'm not going to buy whatever it is you're selling, but at least make more of an articulate statement than "this one is the one where her friends really see her what is."

I welcome any response, sogetto or parodies of the numerous junky, spammy posts that- as of 9:39 am eastern time, are TAKING UP HALF OF THE THE GENERAL DISCUSSIONS BOARD.

hrrrmph.

ah, i see as of 9:44 they have all been removed. How nice.

I still rest my case on the fact that, I know life is hard, I know we all have to have money, and I can't get too mad at anyone who's out there trying, I guess, but really- in an issue beyond just this site- spammers, telemarketers, viruses that send your google search clicks to bogus websites- I repeat : *would you at least make a straightforward, or failing that, at least an appealing or even legible plea (which will be shot down) for me to buy/donate/give/click for more info on free viagra????*

You've got my time, that's 2/3 of the effort, now I want to know that you're really trying to sell me on something.

And may I also suggest a copy of Strunk and White, a guide to grammar and essay structuring? I'm not saying you have to be religious about the details, but really "this is one where her friends are all so catty"- this is supposed to be worth my time???

My guess is that these things are composed in another language and then use something like Google to translate them into English. They plague another board that I frequent with the same new user name every day M.O. and someone there said that they came from a Russian-based site and warned us to definitely not give any credit card info away.

Not that I needed to be told that when someone is breaking the law by providing me with bootleg goods that they would not be adverse to any other illegal activity such as identity theft.

Here I report them all as spam as soon as I see them and as I'm an insomniac, I frequently catch them in the act.

Effin' Russkies.

*That's* where the imitation Microsoft SpyWare virus comes from. It tells you it's Microsoft, it has the multicolored shield, and it tells you it's doing a full scan for you...then your computer goes bye-bye.

I've had it twice now.

It appalls me that Microsoft doesn't take more action on this or at least try to inform people of this thing.

That happened to my brother-in-law and he asked me to come fix it since I'm fairly good at such things. Perhaps not even so much adept as persistent.

I ended up having to save the documents he wanted and reinstalling the operating system since it would not let me delete the faux-Microsoft program even following the steps that Microsoft had on their site at the time (this was four years ago). Even a boxed third party Undelete program from Symantec could not get rid of it.

I had to reformat the drive and reinstall XP.

I have a golden rule that I NEVER use website analysers, fixers, computer scanners, etc. I do everything myself, I keep firewalls up, keep auto updates off and use a program called *Cookie Pal* to reduce/eliminate/ruduce the number of cookies that hackers and people involve in spying used to know your every moves.

I keep the internet disconnected from the computer when not online. People with broadband, best to use a small 5 port ethernet hub that is powered seperately so you can turn power off to the unit. The best way for complete disconnection. I will never use wireless.

I also don't use website backups and do web surfing.. Hackers are generally not interested in older operating systems, I rarely encounter a virus or the malware that corrupts your win.ini file (I keep a backup under a different filename). They go under the filenames natal and speedy (.pif and .bat) This is where the reboot under DOS prompt comes in handy and the old attrib.exe MS-DOS program comes in handy :)

The one thing I am really sick of is Mircosoft constant UPDATING where it is NOT needed. Internet Explorer version 8 is fine enough thank you very much!

I'm using a small IBM Think Center for internet ONLY, nothing else is done on it. I do everything else on other computers that is not connected to the internet.

Being "trendy" does not make one smart.

With some rare exceptions, spam posters use disposable email services like Yopmail to create logins for one time use in spamming forums. Almost universally, any links they post will lead to some combination of black market goods and malware. Like the Nigerian email scams, they only continue to do it because they can make money from you. The spammers that plague the TCM forum don't care whether you buy anything from them. They're just interested in you viewing their website, because they sell advertising based on the number of hits they get. So click a link in a spam post, and you're feeding a spammer. Or, even worse, infecting your computer with all kinds of malware.

That's likely because I seem to be the only one who bothers clicking the Report Abuse button on each one and flagging them as Spam when they show up here, so Michael can remove them. Everyone else just seems to only start a complaint thread about the spam instead of helping out by clicking the Report Abuse.

oh no!

we must not let fracas begin over senseless junk posts that are the ones everyone hates!

everyone who must agree we all do not like senseless junk posts and move on from there.

Sons of Anarchy, season 4: Little Joe and Hoss realize Miss Kitty has been kidnapped and is being the one held ransom there in the pueblo Ponderosa Steakhouse.

Appreciated there are attempts to remove junk posts by TCM Web Administrator, really we do.

Very simple: If an Abuse Report has already been clicked on a comment, you can't do it a second time. If you try to, you get a message that "An abuse report has already been filed for this post". Had anyone else already done so on that bunch of spam posts this morning, I wouldn't have been able to click to report them....as I just did on another one which just showed up.

Wow, I've never gotten that messdage and I've reported a large number of these spam posts.

Maybe, as on the IMDb, it just keeps the same person from making more than one report. I'm going to try that on one that I just reported and see if that's the case.

EDITED TO ADD

Yes, I tried to report one that I just reported five minutes ago and I got that message.

You're right about that...it prevents the same person from reporting more than once.

OMG!

I was thinking about making a Yoda joke earlier as it related to the odd syntax of the junk messages that were cluttering the board this morning.

Perceptive very, yes you are!

most annoying, one of, is way these spam thread titles assume that we know or care or give a frig about their stupid shows that we've never heard of yes. as though some kind of club it is, with references idiotic to assinine activities of equally thick headed characters whose boring and pointless social lives in their tedious tv show world would have opposite effect on those who like proper filmed stories as in most people here would rather hang themselves with old videotapes then watch inane show being spammed fed up with stupidity like this I am.

I always report any I see. I am usually only here from ~8pm - 4am, ET, Sat. - Tue., so I didn't see the barrage from this am.

If only someone would write a program to forward all the Viagra sales spam to Nigerian Bank scammers, and forward all the Nigerian Bank scams to the Viagra sales folks, we'd all be happy... :)

I didn't see what was going on earlier today, either...

But there was a rather clever, or more clever, spam in the "Films and Filmmakers" forum the other day (since been deleted).

It started off with a question about a film - something about an AA movie, I can't remember - and then there was the list below of the usual spam links that take you goodness knows where, followed by a repeat of the question from the start of the post.

Anyway, it looked like a regular post until you got to the middle of it...

Somebody else mentioned how clever it was...

Anyway, it's gone now...

Maybe all the spam is because Halloween is getting near?? Who knows???

Maybe a user is a witch or warlock and is casting spells on the message board and its users???

Could explain what happened to the LY thread... ;)

Do you mean the "Loretta Young" thread? Because if so, it's still around, it's just slipped down to page 2. Feel free to bump it up onto page 1 if you want. Just remember to refrain from saying anything even vaguely critical about the lady, or her nieces and nephews might get upset.

Yes, I was referring to that long lived (and long may she live) and estimable thread about that well-loved (and not-so-well-loved) film star.

As for being critical of LY and offending relatives, think that could only happen if something false in fact about her was written. And it would depend on the severity of the error in fact.

You can't do much else when it involves people who are dead.

Except if it's something concerning a documented fact, and then it looks bad on the person using the untruth if it's pointed out to him or her and they don't change it.

More on this issue here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/4630243.stm

Another good article with mention of an actual case where Errol Flynn's daughters sued, unsuccessfully it turned out, here:

http://www.rightsofwriters.com/2011/01/can-you-be-sued-for-libeling-dead-john.html

And many countries are considering changing the law to allow relatives of the dead to sue for libel, Scotland being one example. It would be on limited grounds but once you open that door, other things can be allowed too.

Article about Scotland here:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/law/2011/jan/24/scotland-law-defamation-dead

Sort of related would be the Canadian example of the family and relatives of Lucy Maud Montgomery of "Anne of Green Gables" fame suing about a CBC TV movie of "Anne of Green Gables" back in 1985:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_of_Green_Gables_(1985_film)#Lawsuit

Montgomery was a writer and the lawsuit involved a contract and copyright issues, but very interesting anyway. Has to do with relatives of a dead person trying to sue in court and collect money...
