cybrspacy
Dear Larry, I just love Charles Boyer and wonder if you have any memories to share. I would be so grateful.
therealfuster
I think the performance I enjoy most, is the one on "I Love Lucy" where he spoofs his own film persona. Boyer doing Boyer, and fooling Lucy, shows his sense of humor and is a delightful episode.
ayresorchids
cybr, I developed quite the crush on Boyer after seeing him in a movie called Confidential Agent recently. I realized that I'd seen all too few of his films, so I'm trying to catch up. I'd sure love to see History is Made at Night, but is that one ever hard to find (except on ebay for $35 per vid)! bhryun
Did he star in a movie alongside Bacall? What's the name of that movie? Cute accent, isn't it? LOVED him on Gaslight.
feaito
Boyer and Bacall starred in "The Confidential Agent"... never seen it though.
cybrspacy
I just saw your post and it's been 2 months! Anyway, History is Made at Night is worth whatever you have to cough up for it. I bought mine on ebay and I know I didn't pay 35.00 It's Boyer at his most handsome, romantic and charming. You'll swoon.
feaito
Another vote for "History Made at Night", one of the most "unique" films I have ever seen. Truly worthwhile to buy. Try at Amazon.com, I bought a second hand VHS there from a seller at a very reasonable price, some two or three years ago.
shainablue1
Oh don't get me started on my man Charles Boyer. History Is Made At Night- Love Affair tied at #1 always in my heart. I think Lucy put it best in that episode when she was trying to describe him- " he's just so GGRRRRRR ( a primitive sexy growl)"
cybrspacy
Sounds like you and I will have to duke it out over Boyer! I knew I wasn't the only one out there who was crazy about him. Don't forget Hold Back the Dawn if you're talking sexy. That scene in the bar where he makes "gigolo eyes" at Goddard, and the scene in the hotel lobby where he seduces De Havilland are hotter than any being filmed today. And all the actors remained fully clothed! Amazing. Yes. Lucy got it right for sure.Grrrrrrrr!
shainablue1
Hold Back The Dawn is absolutely amazing, youj're right. I watched it on tape Saturday after I had not seen it since I was like 17 ( so, 10 years ago when it was on AMC ).I fell in love with him all over again. I was singing love songs all day and couldn't eat just thinking of him and wishing I could meet a man like that someday in real life! The whole movie his eyes, his voice- whoa! Yup, those gigolo eyes, Goddard got it right.
vecchiolarry
Cybrspacy, I just now stumbled onto this thread. But, sorry I can't tell you much more about Charles Boyer than what's public knowledge -- he committed suicide after his wife died; and his son committed suicide about 10 years before that. I think his name was Mickey. Mrs. Boyer, Patricia, did a lot of chrity work in LA and was honoured several times for her work over the years. My grandmother knew her, but I didn't. Sorry! cybrspacy
Dear Larry, Thank you for responding. I think you answered me a while back. His son Michael shot himself over a girlfriend. People who knew Charles said he tended to be moody and depressed, at the least not outwardly "happy" even before his son's death. Depression runs in my family and I think meds might have helped the Boyers, but in those days it just wasn't done...Mrs. Boyer sounded like an unbeat type though. I wonder how she coped with Charles's dark side.
deborahwakid11
Hi, Cyberspacy: I think the son's name was Michael, but he might have been nicknamed Mickey. The story I heard was that he was playing Russian Roulette to show off to a girl and lost. However, I have heard the other story as well. Who knows what the truth was. I didn't realize Boyer suffered from depression, although I know he was devastated by his wife's death (as well as his sons). From what I understand, Boyer, himself was unwell at the time of Pat's death. So, after paying off all of his bills, he took his own life. Ironically, Boyer played a psychiatrist in an early gem of his called "Private Worlds," which I still think holds up pretty well. Also in the cast were Claudette Colbert (a good friend), Joel McCrea, Joan Bennett, and Helen Vinson. If he suffed from depression, I find it extremely ironic that he played a psychiatrist in that movie. It's one of those films from the Paramount wasteland that is never shown. I also read somwhere that it took the Boyers ten years to have a child. So, Michael might have been a little spoiled as well. Who knows? Larry is so knowledgeable. I did not know about Pat Patterson Boyer's charity work. I especially like Boyer's later films, like "Barefoot In the Park." He was always a very underrated actor. He did a great Napoleon in "Conquest as well. Take care. Deborah
vecchiolarry
Hi Deborah, I think you're right about the name being Michael and Mickey being a nickname. Also, now that you mention it, he was playing Russian Roulette and lost. I remember that now after reading your posting. Thanks! Larry
kimbo3200
For those of you that want to see History is Made at Night, you can buy it on amazon.com for about 18 (not including shipping and handling). I just checked and there were quite a few listed for about that price - they are from second hand dealers. That's not a bad price at all. I'm just writing this because if you want to see it, I suggest it; it's a great movie!
