The Devil's Field Marshal

Received an item on Facebook today about a new TV film airing on German TV about Erwin Rommel.

Very controversial film too as it paints a less than sympathetic portrait of Rommel.

Film is premiering next Thursday, November 1, 2012 on TV in Germany.

Anyway, Facebook item was the next cover of the German magazine "Der Spiegel" with an image of Rommel on the cover:

http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/index-2012-44.html

In German it says "Des Teufels Feldmarschall" - "The Devil's Field Marshal."

Anyway, very interesting in light of the controversy about the Hitchcock TV film concerning Hedren in that you have another film about a dead historical personage that is very controversial.

In the case of this German TV movie, Rommel's family and many historians are not impressed by it.

Article from today's "The Independent" about the Rommel film

("Row Over Film That Portrays Rommel as More Rat Than Fox"):

Another article from "The Daily Mail" here:

ARD is airing the film and more information about it here (in German):

ARD is a television network and sorta like the BBC or CBC (to Canadians)...

Video of Rommel film here including interesting scenes of the making of it:

German actor Ulrich Tukur plays Rommel in this new movie:

Anyway, just something interesting... Since TCM has aired films about Rommel in the past and will probably do so in future, just something FYI...

Also supposed to be a Hollywood film in development titled "Killing Rommel" based on the Steven Pressfield historical novel of the same name:

Who knows when it will come out? 2013? 2014??
