Kansas,Shortly before the Civil War.Bob Seton(John Wayne)and his pal Doc Grunch(George Gabby Hayes)ride into town where they meet wealth banker,Angus McCloud(Porter Hall)his pretty daughter,Mary(Claire Trevor)and son Fletch(Roy Rogers)He meets Will Cantrell(Walter Pidgeon)the local schoolteacher whos engaged to Mary.

 

 

The townsfolk ask Bob to run against Cantrell as the local marshall.Bob wins and Cantell turns against Bob.

 

 

The Civil War breaks out and Cantrell forms an army of raiders and killers dressed as Confederaye soildiers and Kansas becomes a bloodbath.

 

 

Mary marries Cantrell and Fletch joins up not believing Cantrell is a selfish,bloodthirsty,killer.Bob decides to returns to his ranch in Texas,but before he leaves hes picked up by one of Cantrells patrols.Mary and Fletch find out what Cantrell really is and Mary is sorry she married him and finds she loves Bob.
