Recommended Posts

The first three days of March are just the last 3 days of the 31 days of Oscar.

Greer Garson is star of the month.

There is a weekly Friday night tribute to director Roberto Rossellini.

I've added themes if I've been able to figure them out.

Let me be the first to say thank you and don't worry, I won't ask you as to how long will it be before the April schedule will be available. ;)

Seriously, your efforts are appreciated in this corner.

That is a funny line, I hadn't even looked at the schedule when I posted.

I did notice that the Robert Mitchum double feature is also a Deborah Kerr double feature. But we must allow Calvinnme her preference. ;)

Calvin,

Thanks so much for doing all this! Looks like some character actors are getting their day in the sun which is always welcome around here.

And count me in as someone who really appreciates your George Brent tribute title!

The reason I commented is that the day starts with a film that has George Brent pretty much at the center of the drama. As the day progresses he gets shuttled more to one side in favor of Bette. George's birthday tribute actually end with a documentary about Bette Davis. I like all of these films, I just found the situation humorous. And thanks for the kind comments. Hopefully I can find the missing titles in the next few days. Anna and the King of Siam (1946) is in one of the empty slots, I just can't find the actual time and date that it is playing.

Congrats to both calvinnme and the TCM programmers for another job well done. I'm particularily pleased that I will finally see the Kim Novak interview. Also in regards to the Robert Mitchum / Deborah Kerr double feature reference, it would have been even better if they made it a triple feature by including "The Grass Is Greener".

Oh definitely, my eyes bulged out when I saw that! There aren't any good fansubs available for this and I've been dying to see it for a long while. Journey to Italy is a big deal in and of itself but India, Fear, Machine Kills Bad People, Socrates...just heaven. I hope they don't have to drop anything.

Lionel Rogosin and Roberto Rossellini tributes? Yeah, let's complain about the "overly commercial" TCM instead and not celebrate this stuff.

And Pedro Costa's In Vanda's Room! It's great to see more important contemporary filmmakers on TCM.

*La Femme Nikita* (1990)!

Tchéky Karyo!

Anne Parillaud!

Jean-Hugues Anglade!

Story and direction by Luc Besson!

Basic story: drug addict is transformed into a useful member of society.

Funniest scene ever: she follows a person in a grocery store.

I am super-astoundingly-pleased this is scheduled!

I do not see it as slaughter. It is selective culling after due deliberation by a panel of experts. It is in this a form of social quality control and it was done as neatly and cleanly as possible.

> This movie is brutal. The bathtub scene is the kind of thing that actually frightens us. There are horror movies that go to extremes of gore that have absolutely no effect on our fear centers. And then there is stuff like this.

I believe it is brutal politically because her behavior is socially unacceptable to the point that she is given the death penalty but the same behavior is nurtured and capitalized when it could benefit the state.

I believe it is brutal psychologically because Anne Parillaud so excellently portrays a waif trapped in a world she does not understand and the only possible exit is to a world even more strange and terrifying.

The most brutal moment for me is when she is in the cell and told where is her new official address and then she is told as a cold matter of fact that if she does no co-operate fully then her official address with become her actual one.

I believe the bathtub scene clearly shows the artistry of the movie. It is appalling and disgusting and of more importance is that the characters are greatly appalled and disgusted. It is worse for them that they know it was their mistake which caused such a thing. It is a wonderful dichotomy in that it creates motivation in them to work harder and to work smarter so as to not hurt people when their profession is assassination

It would have been very easy to make such a movie all blood-and-gore. It needed a brilliant script and wonderful performances to raise it to a thrilling movie which is also an intense personal drama and significant social commentary.

It is a movie also which creates in me a conflict. I love the movie very much and I greatly appreciate that TCM is airing it but I would find it hard to defend its airing on the channel because it is so very new.
