Hey, I have one:

Linda Darnell !

Linda Darnell !

(should be) Star of the Month

It's clear as a bell.

(Hope you don't think I'm trivializing your Linda Darnell for SOTM thread, Arturo. My poemettes may be lame, but my hope that she'll be star of the month at TCM soon is genuine. And the "rhymes" seemed to work for Joel McCrea.)

Fox.Movie.Channel will air SWEET AND LOWDOWN (1944) on Tuesday, 2/18 @ 7:35 am. It features Linda Darnell in her last role at.Fox playing a sweet young thing, as her previous film, SUMMER STORM, made on loan to UA, decisively changed her image.and her career. Linda doesnt have much to do in SALD, but this big band musical is fun, and has great music courtesy of Benny Goodman.

Later that.morning,..at 10:15 am eastern, FMC will.ahow ORCHESTRA WIVES (1942), this time the marvelous music is by the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Originally,.Darnell started filming this, despite not wanting to do it, but was removed after a couple of weeks, and replaced by Ann Rutherford. Great.music in any case.

For those with METV (Hollywood), on Friday, 2/20 @ 4 am Pacific, they will air the first of two guest starring appearances Linda Darnell did on Wagon Train, the 1958 episode entitled "The Dora Gray Story". Linda looks sexy (and shows ample cleaveage for 1950s tv) as a mercenary girl trying to get to San Francisco. Robert Horton is the latest man she attempts to seduce.

Copying and pasting from an earlier post:

On Sunday, 2/23 @ 6 am eastern, FMC will air HANGOVER SQUARE (1945), a very good thriller set in London at the turn of the (last) century. Directed by John Brahm, fresh off his 1944 hit THE LODGER, it featured two members of that cast: Laird Cregar and George Sanders, in hopes of another similar hit. To that end Patrick Hamilton's novel was adapted.as a period film, instead of the contemporary setting of the original source. Cregar is another deranged madman (he plays Jack the Ripper in TL), but a talented composer writing a sonata. He gets distracted from this by temptress Linda Darnell, a singer who flirts with him so that he will write popular songs for her. He is soon captivated, but she only sees him as a stepping stone. When he finds out he loses it.

Linda plays the first of her femme fatales at her home studio, , after her breakthrough and career changing part in SUMMER STORM on loan the year before. She is quite effective. Tragically, this will be Cregar's last film; wanting to play romantic leads, he had gone on a crash diet that damaged his heart. He died before the movie was released.

Anyway,.Bernard Hermann wrote an amazing score for the film, and with some superb camera work, this atmospheric tale benefits from a strong cast, which also include Glenn Langan,.Faye ,Marlowe, and Alan Napier. Highly recommended.

On Monday, 2/24 @ 6 am eastern, FMC will show THE LOVES OF EDGAR ALLEN POE (1942). This biopic confirmed Linda's falling status among the studio hierarchy. The film was done at the studio's B lot. While the production looks reasonable enough, the script and direction leave much to be desired. A reviewer at the time accurately called it a "static and lifeless tableaux".

On Sunday,.3/2.@.6.am.eastern, FMC will air THE LOVES OF EDGAR ALLEN POE (1942). Linda Darnell is top billed in this biography turned out by Fox' B unit. Coincidentally or not with her turning 18 years old, with this assignment she realized her once promising career as the girl next door ingenue was stagnating, as she was now being given unimportant assignments, and would soon be loaned to other studios for their unimportant assignments. This would all change in a couple of years, although with no help from studio chief Darryl Zanuck, whose enmity she seemed to engender when she reputedly spurned his advances when she became of age.

I just found online and ordered a dvd of probably the Darnell movie I have been most on the lookout, THIS IS MY LOVE (1954), a film I haven't seen since the 80s.. This overwrought melodrama, with a notable cast, has what is arguably Linda's best acting on film. The film got mixed reviews, and wasn't a hit, and along with other factors, started Darnell's downward slide as a top star.

Just a reminder, FMC will show two Linda Darnell movies back to back, tomorrow, Monday, 3/17: HANGOVER SQUARE (1945) @ 4:30 am eastern, and THE LOVES OF EDGAR ALLAN POE (1942) @ 6 am eastern.

Later in the week, on Thursday, 3/20@ 4 am Pacific, MeTV (Hollywood) will air the second Wagon Train episode Linda did, "The Sacramento Story". This was the first season finale, and as such wrapped up some earlier storylines. One of these has Darnell reprising her role as Dora Gray, having finally made it to California. It is just a cameo, just two scenes that she has, but the episode has several other stars, including Dan Duryea, Marjorie Main and Margaret O'Brien.

Tomorrow morning, Thursday, 3/21 on FMC, @ 9:30 am eastern, the period thriller HANGOVER SQUARE (1945) will air. Linda Darnell plays a temptress who tempts deranged composer Laird Cregar to write songs for her, and the show she manipulates to land. With George Sanders as the Scotland Yard detective on the trail of the killer. Highly recommended.

I finally receivrd the dvd I ordered of THIS IS MY LOVE (1954). This soap opera has Linda as a spinster daydreaming an alternate life, instead of the one she has. She lives with her sister Faith Domergue, and Faiths husband and two children. The husband, played by Dan Duryea, is a bitter parapalegic, who taunts and torments Linda constantly; they were an item before he dumped her for her sister.

Into this scenario comes Rick Jason, old friends with Lindas boorish boyfriend, Hal Baylor. Linda quickly falls for him, but soon enough he switches his interest to Faith. It all ends tragically.

Linda is subdued for most of the movie, with her voice uncharacteristically soft. But those around her seem to get a rise out of her, and finally, she has a spectacular outburst. This has some of Darnells best acting, and she wins your sympathy. The dvd had a decent visual, although thr PatheColor was somewhat faded.

This Tuesday, 4/1 @ 6 am eastern, Linda Darnell is topbilled in THE LOVES OF EDGAR ALLAN POE (1942), in anything where Fox will feature biopics.

Since I received the dvd of THIS IS MY LOVE (1954), I have seen it several times. Some observations: This was one of two movies Linda made with director Stuart Heisler. The other was 1952's ISLAND OF DESIRE/SATURDAY ISLAND. In both Linda was instrumental in helping select her leading man, essentially newcomers, Tab Hunter for IOD, Rick Jason for TIML. Both went on to have substantial careers. Interestingly, in both movies Linda plays a spinster, despite her knockout looks, afraid to get involved with a man. In ISLAND OF DESIRE, she is a doctor, and her dedication to her profession has kept her from romantic involvement, until being stranded on a south seas island during WW2 with callow marine Tab Hunter. He eventually breaks down her reseeve. Complications ensue when pilot Donald Grey crash lands on the island.

THIS IS MY LOVE has Linda as a lovelorn woman, living her fantasies through her writings, who is swept away when a handsome stranger goes for her. She puts the breaks on, and he goes for her married sister.

Linda seems to have gravitated towards these roles that offered her offbeat assignments, in the form of spinsters, from her usual glamorous roles she was usually offered. In both, however, there is a fair amount of exploitation of her looks. In IOD, she spends much of the movie in some fairly revealing outfits, moreso when wet. In TIML, there are several rather gratuitous scenes of her in a black slip, and a pink one in another.

Only the first movie was a hit, but In the latter, she was given some acting opportunities, which she did quite well. THIS IS MY LOVE did poorly mainly because of poor reviews, and Linda's movie career was suddenly in jeopardy. The reasons are various: when the film came out, in the fall of 1954, she hadn't had another movie release in over a year, since SECOND CHANCE in SUMMER 1953. She had filmed a movie around that time in Italy, DONNE PROIBITE, but it would not be released in the US until late 1956. Another film she did in Italy, in early 1955, GLI ULTIMI CINQUE MINUTI, never had a stateside release. And during 1954~1955, she was married to a rich industrialist who didn't want her to work, but play the role of a wealthy Park Avenue matron. So Linda had little exposure on the screen, as well as being away from the Hollywood scene, and would receive very few viable offers. This was in the midst of Hollywood downsizing the numbers of movies made, and concomitant cutbacks in personnel. Her next appearance on the big screen would be after her divorce, in mid ,1956, in the western DAKOTA INCIDENT. By then she was focusing on TV drama anthologies, as a way of continuing her career.

Linda Darnell is quite sexy in HS (no wonder she has poor psychotic Laird Cregar at her beck and call, and soon over the edge). She shows of her shapely legs in the aforementioned scene, singing the comedic music hall tune, "Have You Seen Joe".

HANGOVER SQUARE will be shown on Fox Movie Channel on Monday, April 28 @ 4:30 am eastern. This is one of three Linda Darnell FMC will show in the next 10 days. The others are THE LOVES OF EDGAR ALLAN POE, tomorrow April 20 @ 4:51 am eastern, and SWEET AND LOWDOWN on Thursday, April 24 @ 9:05 am. Scroll below for more info on these films.

Thanks for the heads up, Nora. I agree that it is a disappointment that it is released as another Fox DVD rom, instead of getting the remastered.treatment with bonus material. But at least it is getting released....hopefully it will be the superior print that came out in Spain.

I have purchased from Amazon the most recent releases from the Fox Cinema Archive series featuring Linda Darnell, FOREVER AMBER and CHAD HANNA,along with two earlier released which I hadn't yet bought (these will complete me having all the Darnell released in the series so far). Even though I have all of these movies on DVD, recorded from FMC, TCM or HBO/Cinemas, I had decided to get these dvd roms, when able to, in order to encourage the series to continue, and hopefully have truly rare movies released. Plus having them in jewel cases with cover art is an added bonus, and display much better than my homemade dvds in their slip covers (as mentioned on the thread about recorded movies, I have way too many to make buying jewel cases for all practical or even affordable). Now I can't wait to receive these movies, and hope the quality is very good.

Thanks very much for this, Arturo.  Linda Darnell is one of my favorites, and I don't think I've seen IT HAPPENED TOMORROW.  And ORCHESTRA WIVES is always such fun.  Interesting that she was removed from the movie--I must read more about that!

IT HAPPENED TOMORROW is a fun movie, as Dick Powell tries to make money from his knowledge beforehand of sporting and racing finals.  There is even a scene where Linda dresses in drag, with one of Powell's pin- or chalk-stripe suits.

Linda did not look forward to OW, feeling she was not the jitterbug type.  But as she was then on the outs with studio head Darryl Zanuck, she had to do it.  She she relented and was filming it for about two weeks, but must have been giving a dispirited lackluster performance.  In any case, she was removed and put on suspension.  Too bad, as I think she would have done well in this fun musical.  Ironically, she would soon make a similar big band musical, SWEET AND LOWDOWN, just before the turnaround in her career with her new image as a femme fatale.

Thanks for this; it's always intriguing to hear the behind the scenes doings.  She was so beautiful, but also had a really special quality.

I'm really looking forward to IT HAPPENED TOMORROW in a coupe hours.  With the French films, it's turning out to be quite a night of movies!
