filmlover
I didn't know until I read the article that at 86, he just married a 40-year-old. Reminds me of the joke of the 90-year-old billionaire who married a 21-year old woman. A friend asked him, "But aren't you worried about the honeymoon night?". The old man shrugged and said, "Well...if she dies, she dies."
Dargo2
Or, as Letterman recently said about 86 y/o Hugh Hefner's impending wedding to a 26 y/o... "Hugh is presently getting ready for his honeymoon. He's already on a Cialis drip." (...btw, re Dick Van Dyke...BRAVO...I think it's great that one of the last remaining multi-talented performers in the world is getting his due)

Tikisoo
Well I think any award VanDyke receives is well deserved. He certainly has brought a lot of pleasure & laughter to the world. I recently read his autobiography over the summer. Amazing how his biggest breaks into show business were pure dumb luck. But every time he was granted a "break", he worked extremely hard with determination to learn and succeed. His "salad" years of learning and honing his craft came via radio, kind of surprising for such a physical performer. And how lucky he was to have the once-in-a-lifetime success of a fabulous TV show that really holds up very well today. The casting & writing on that show was amazing. Congratulations Dick! You deserve it! PS I'm so lucky too-it was just announced the historic Capitol Theater will be screening Mary Poppins (35mm) in 2013!!! Yay! RaquelVixen
Only in Hollywood could you have a Dick and a Dyke rise to the top.

lavenderblue19
*RV*- My post was about congratulating Dick Van Dyke on this award. What was your post for? A cheap joke. It's the XMAS season, can't you and your other co-hort *Just Be Nice*, without complaints, and cheap cracks that aren't funny. Both of you just be polite and nice for a few days, is that possible? willbefree25
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...........hey RV, didn't you notice that he *specifically* didn't mention you! I love this place!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :) I am happy that an alcoholic can rise to the top, even if he does marry a girl. Even though his movies stunk, his DVD Show was a gem. P.S. Am I your other cohort ? I'm proud to be in such good company, then!
RaquelVixen
You take this stuff too seriously. It's a fun message board that is inclusive of humor as well as anything classic film but what it doesn't need is a wet blanket judging others. Good Grief. willbefree25
Awwwwwwwww, come on, RV, didn't you know we have to post like we're told to post otherwise we'll get called out for not posting like we're supposed to post, according to those who tell us how to post, post-wise that is? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I love this place. :) :)

DownGoesFrazier
I'm certainly not minimizing Van Dyke's career accomplishments, but I'm a little surprised by this award, since he was not primarily a film actor.
slaytonf
Agreed, but he made some good movies, including, of course, Mary Poppins. Also: What a Way to Go!, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and that great forgotten classic, Cold Turkey.
lavenderblue19
SAG Awards are not just for the big screen. It's an award for Films and Television. He certainly was a Major Player on TV.
Dargo2
finance, I often wonder if the reason for his scant filmography might have been due to his career flowering just as the need for movie Song-and-Dance Men who could also act was dying on the vine? (..and yeah, I said "who could act", because I HAVE seen him act very well in a few roles where he doesn't use that "rubber face" of his...though admittedly it WAS primarily on the small screen)
lzcutter
> I didn't know until I read the article that at 86, he just married a 40-year-old. He and Michele Triola were together from the time she lost her lawsuit against Lee Marvin (Van Dyke's marriage collapsed in the aftermath of the lawsuit that Troika brought against Lee Marvin and lost) until her death in 2009. He met his new wife shortly after Triola's death. As for another poster's calling Van Dyke a drunk, he's been clean and sober since the 1970s. LonesomePolecat
I love Dick Van Dyke. What a talented guy. I love him in his series and his many movies like Mary Poppins and Fitzwilly. But mostly I respect a guy who admits his cockney accent was terrible.

willbefree25
But, from *his own admission*, he was drunk during the Dick Van Dyke show, and since that was his best achievement to date, that was quite an accomplishment. Trying to control the posts of others, lzcutter? Tsk, tsk, not nice.
Mythoughts
I always liked Dick Van Dyke. Him getting a SAG award made me think he was "sagging" in certain areas.
Filmgoddess
Dick van Dyke is a legend and most deserving of this honor. It has nothing to dow with just film. It's about acting. The TV has a "screen" just as film has a "screen." There are far more TV actors in SAG than film actors. Last year's recipient was Mary Tyler Moore and when Dick van Dyke came onstage to present her the award he received a prolonged standing ovation. I think they realized they hadn't honored him yet and now they are. I hope he'll mention Stan Laurel. They were very close in Laurel's later years and he admired van Dyke very much and once said that the best impression of him ever was by Dick. Bravo!
