qqurkingham
I just wanted to say the Ben Mankiewitz comment about Brian Donlevy being "Good" in The Glass Key is something of an understatement; Hollywood may've been hot over Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake, but, jeminy, Brian Donlevy is really good. fredbaetz
Brian Donlevy was great. I always love his description in "City of Nets" on the "Great McGinty" "He started his working day by inserting his false teeth; then he squeezed himself into a very tight girdle, then put on his platform shoes and jacket with padded shoulders and then his hair piece" Thus outfitted he played tough guy roles.... William "Wild Bill" Wellman told a story about Donlevy when during the shoot on "Beau Geste", Donlevy was making life hard for Ray Milland on the set. Finally Milland had enough and the scene when Milland stabs Donlevy with the bayonet, well, Milland was an expert swordsman and Donlevy was wearing padding, but there was an exposed area right at the armpit and Milland stabs him there and draws blood and Donlevy fainted. He never bothered Milland again.... It's spelled Mankiewicz..... Welcome to TCM... Edited by: fredbaetz on Dec 21, 2012 1:11 PM
