Your BALLOT for the Oscar

Recommended Posts

Very interesting take on the Philadelphia Story and the Stewart character. Yes the guy was indeed a smarmy d*ck but as played by Stewart one does have sympathy for the guy. i.e. if judged only on his actions there would be no sympathy but with Stewart and his type of corny playing of the role (similar to that in Mr. Smith), the character does manage to win people over. Compare this to the remake with Frank Sinatra. Frank's persona fits that of the character!

I probably should have clarified I was thinking only about Oscar nominations, since that's what this thread is about, but yeah, okay it did get a solitary nomination. But not in any of the big four categories, which is also what I meant to say.

I really meant the post to be as a friendly FYI, not as "neener neener neener, you made a boo-boo."

If anything, my "correction" pointed out how astute it was of you to think the acting/direction of the film was first-rate, as the NY Film Critics (not an easy body to please) agreed with you.

ps- I make factual mistakes in my posts all the time.

Yes, I meant- in part at least- the destruction of Manderly. I just feel that if Hitchcock had free reign of the picture (which he didn't, David O. Selznick ran that show by all accounts) he would've provided a more exciting finale- imagine the shots of Mrs. DeWinter escaping the mad Mrs. Danvers as she runs amok torching the place as done with Hitch's undeniable visual flair... I just feel like something is missing in the way the picture ends, those two hours leading up to the finale *demand more* than a secondhand retelling of the climax. It's the sort of thing they would do in a small-scale picture to avoid going over budget.

fyi- there was a very inn-teresting documentary on PBS, maybe the American Masters series?- that profiled the battles between Hitch and Selznick on Rebecca and follows the career arcs of both men post 1940 with a touch of irony. I tried to find it on youtube, but couldn't locate it, but I know it has been posted on that site before. Selznick basically memoed Hitch half to death, micro-managing the production because he was desperate to repeat the success of GWTW.

Selznick also wanted the smoke from the burning fire to spell an "R" in the sky, luckily Hitch won that battle.

Oh, and we do actually see Mrs. Danvers being burned to death- there's that shot at the very end of her in Rebecca's bedroom as the fire blazes about, a shot that was mimicked a year later in Ghost of Frankenstein.

I'm not offended, Addison. I was just reminded you've got to stay sharp on this board because there are a lot of film-knowledgeable people around here!

James, I liked your point about the smarminess of Stewart's character being undermined potentially by Stewart's inherent decency. I thought the same thing about Jack Lemmon while watching DAYS OF WINE & ROSES last night and was tempted to start a thread about it. His character is really an irresponsible slimeball, and yet I feel like our sympathies are supposed to tilt toward him at the end of the film because he has the strength to stay sober, while Lee Remick's character doesn't. Yes, his character experiences a lot of sorrow, but it doesn't come across as guilt to me, more just self-pity, woe-is-me, my wife is gone. Charles Bickford's character tries to make Lemmon's feel culpability for his actions late in the film, but this scene doesn't really end up going anywhere. In my interpretation of the film, Lemmon is a total louse. Heck, Remick doesn't even drink when they first meet, and immediately after Lemmon appears to be genuinely touched that Bickford trusts him enough to offer him a beer, he sneaks in hard liquor to Remick, and pretty much bullies/seduces her into falling off the wagon when she shows reluctance. Everything that happens to her is his fault, and yet because it's Jack Lemmon, I feel like our sympathies are largely supposed to lie with him. While it's still a powerful movie, I thought it was a bit dishonest. The film might have worked better with a different actor in the part.

Anyway, moving back to the parameters of this thread, here are my picks for the "Big Four" of 1940, which was indeed a pretty great year for movies. I'm not giving anything to REBECCA; I'm not even sure it was the best Hitchcock picture of 1940 (given the choice, I'd rather watch FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT right now!), much less the Best Picture overall.

Best Picture - Give me FANTASIA for being so groundbreaking and ambitious within the framework of its little subcorner of the film universe, one which has been profitable during most phases of film history, though usually not typically very critically revered. I don't know if FANTASIA's grand intentions were fulfilled in the short (or long!) term, but it has certainly been an inspiration for generations of film animators.

Best Director - At least partially because John Ford won the damn thing four times, I'm going to go with George Cukor for THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, not that I wouldn't have, anyway. He puts in a lot of nice, subtle grace notes that keep an extremely talky movie from ever getting dull.

Best Actor - Part of me wants to say Cary Grant, who astonishingly wasn't even nominated for STORY or HIS GIRL FRIDAY, but predictable as it may be, it's hard to go against Henry Fonda for THE GRAPES OF WRATH. Fonda was great in a lot of things, but if I was forced to pick the definitive performance of his career, this is probably it. Incomprehensible he only got two Best Actor nominations in his career (but then again, so did Grant, and his weren't for any of the movies for which he's best remembered).

Best Actress - Rosalind Russell for HIS GIRL FRIDAY. I'm really not a fan of Russell, particularly later career Russell (I guess she's supposed to be obnoxious in fare like GYSPY and AUNTIE MAME, and if so, maybe she's a great actress, because by God, she succeeds!), but she really strikes a cord with me in this film. There's a promo shown between films on TCM in which she's given credit for playing a gutsy career woman at a time when such things weren't fashionable (although to be fair, Jean Arthur and Barbara Stanwyck often did, as well). And so, in spite of maybe the craziest hairstyle in the movies, I will go with Russell (honorable mention to Katharine Hepburn, of course, but like Ford, she also won four competitive Oscars and doesn't really need my support).

Well I like how Rebecca ended. To me the real end, as it relates to the plot is when it is discovered how Rebecca died and the Max wasn't the killer (as well as allowing the new Ms. DeWinters to be secure in the fact that Max wasn't madly in love with Rebecca). That is the end of the story.

Danny is a minor character and just a loose end. Thus I'm fine with how the movie deals with her and I don't see where an extended ending with the burning of the house would of added to the story. Instead it would of distracted from the romantic part of the story (which is the heart of the movie in my view).

Gone for a few hours, and look at all that's happened.,.. Welcome, James and sewhite,

No, Sepiatone, wasn't referring to you, personally. lol You're my favorite ink color when I have my calligraphy stylus out.

I thought by this time there would be branching out to 1946.

I saw what Addison had written about the end of Rebecca. Selznick wasn't afraid of a little fire, (he burned down Atlanta, didn't he?) but I can't say the conflagration needed to be bigger or of longer duration. I would want more movie after that, to answer what happened next; the novel actually ends in the novel fashion, very slow exposition... ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

If you can't sleep later tonight, I will share it. Fallllllllllling action.

I couldn't watch Days of Wine and Roses. Too close to my actual childhood experience with my parents. But from what I've read, the writer sound like he/she got the dysfunction down perfectly.

The thing that bothers me about WINE AND ROSES is that Lemmon had become a heavy drinker in real life, and shooting this disturbing film did nothing to make him want to reduce his drinking...........That really shows what acting can be, something totally divorced from one's own persona. (Blake Edwards did either reduce or quit drinking as a result of making this film.)

Fantasia, s***, I forgot Fantasia...

Although, in looking up the film- which was released in 1940- I was surprised to see that it won two Honorary Oscars in 1941 (actually 1942, when the ceremony was held) which is odd...it also didn't get a single technical nomination at the 1940 awards, even though Pinochio did- in fact, Pinnochio won Best Score and Best Song for When You Wish Upon a Star.

Still, if forced to choose between the two for which merited a Best Picture nod, I'd still go with Pinnochio because it does have some stunning animation of its own and because it has one singular story, whereas Fantasia is many different stories lumped together, qualifying almost as a series of shorts and is a stand-alone experience, really an anomale, more than just a movie.

But it would've been nice if it'd gotten more attention than it did, yes.

*Fantasia* was one of those movies that would hit the circulation scene every few years, like *Gone With The Wind* . And it was a frustrating movie to watch that in the local papers would advertise it with a picture of Mickey Mouse from "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" part. Many parents, with good intentions, would see those ads and drag their pre-school aged children to the theater to see it, thinking it was a typical Disney cartoon. Of course, these kids would start getting fidgity, whiney and disrupt the movie. The parents trying to SHUSH them would cause an even bigger disturbance, and my enjoyment became diminished. Thank goodness when video tape cassettes came along! It also initiated a years long search for any recorded version of the *Nutcracker Suite* that was conducted by Leopold Stakowski, as his interpretation of "Dance of The Sugar Plum Faries" was played at a slower tempo and made more beautiful as a result.

I'm not in agreement that Cary Grant should have been nominated for *Philadelphia Story* . He's done stronger performances elsewhere, as in *Penny Serenade* and *Room For One More* . But generally, when Grant did a movie, he did Cary Grant. In a movie. Not much difference in his delivery from movie to movie. In his case, it happens to be a good thing, but nonetheless...

One of the Oscar nods I've always disagreed with came years later when JOHN WAYNE won his for *True Grit* . Yeah, I liked the movie. And yeah, Wayne was good in it. But like Grant, Wayne too, did Wayne from movie to movie. In GRIT, he was typical Wayne. But there WERE a couple of times Wayne earned a nomination and was passed over, *Red River* being one of those times. I guess he got it for GRIT in an effort to make it up to him.

My choice for 1940 for best picture is His Girl Friday with Cary Grant in that film as best actor, and with Katherine Hepburn as best actress in The Philadelphia Story. It's not that Stewart gives a bad performance, but I think he's better in The Shop Around the Corner and The Mortal Storm. If I have more time, I could give a list of nominees.

Another person who's missed out on All This and Heaven Too...

Again, it's a charming (albeit somewhat flawed) but well-acted film.

Really worth checking out.

Foreign Correspondent too.

*1946*

Not a year I feel quite as passionately about as some others in the history of Oscarama, although I do have to say that the Best Actress category was a complete screw-up that year, with tons of deserving performances left out while three really inferior ones (by Roz Russell, Jane Wyman, and Jennifer Jones did make the cut.)

*Best Picture: Cluny Brown ( Ernst Lubitsch)*

Other worthy runners-up: The Best Years of Our Lives, The Big Sleep, Brief Encounter, Henry V (albeit not a favorite of mine), It's a Wonderful Life, Notorious

*Best Actor in a Leading Role: James Stewart in It's a Wonderful Life*

...and it's worth tacking on as an afterthought: if Myrna Loy in Best Years and Donna Reed in Wonderful Life had more substantial screen time, I'd be all for their placing in the Best Actress race.

I'll echo Addison that isn't a year I'm as passionate about as other years. Wait till we do 1947, a year of incredible performances which were not nominated. I'm less fond of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE than many of you are.

Voting with the Oscar ballots:

Best Actor: Laurence Olivier, HENRY V. I would seriously consider Dana Andrews had he been the one nominated and not Fredric March, who impresses me less.

Best Supporting Actor: Claude Rains, NOTORIOUS. Although Clifton Webb gives his definitive bitchy queen performance in THE RAZOR'S EDGE and Harold Russell adds immeasurably to THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES.

Best Actress: Celia Johnson, BRIEF ENCOUNTER. Unlike Addison, I really like Jane Wyman in THE YEARLING, but I agree that Rosalind Russell and Jennifer Jones gave much better performances in other films.

Best Supporting Actress: Anyone other than Lillian Gish in DUEL IN THE SUN, unless "Funniest Death Scene" is an Oscar category. (Sorry, LG fans, I love her in other roles, but this is not one of her best.)

Best Director: A tie between William Wyler for THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES and David Lean for BRIEF ENCOUNTER would suit me fine. Brilliant work by both (and for anyone who doesn't like their work, I can point to many specifics).

Best Picture: Because BRIEF ENCOUNTER failed to be nominated, no tie this time. THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES.

I haven't seen CLUNY BROWN but hope to do so in the near future.

Fredric March was a great actor, but I don't know why he won for BEST YEARS. It seems that drunk scenes are the quickest way to an Oscar. (Look at Anne Baxter the same year.) I think IAWL was Stewart's best performance, and he would have been a better choice.......March wasn't even on screen that much. (Andrews was on screen a lot more).

I picked 1946 for it was a year of good film, but before I only thought of two them: It's a Wonderful Life and The Best Years of Our Lives.

Wonderful -- Best -- Years The Producers were on to something.

For starters, I am thinking the best actor was Dana Andrews in BYOOL, who has to run through a gamut of emotions in one character yet be authentically grounded and uncertain but not clueless of the future. His slow realization falling for Peggy is one of sweetest love stories I've seen on screen.

damn. i forgot about Stairway to Heaven/ A Matter of Life and Death.

ps- I have the feeling Myrna Loy would've sooner died than won supporting actress (those days were so different) but I get where you're coming from.

pss- was just thinking the other day how much better it would've been had Loy gotten the Claudette Colbert role in Since You Went Away. Would've made the story a lot more down to earth.

Maybe one reason why Loy's Best Years character is relegated to borderline supporting status was because Since You Went Away had been so big a year and a half (or so) before and they felt like the women-on-the-homefront issue had been done, or didn't want to seem like they were retreading familiar turf.

I still reiterate it's a shame Loy didn't do the lead in SYWA, put her in the Colbert part, take out all the hokum, de-clunk the dialogue and let an hour of footage hit the floor and you'd (likely) get a decent picture.

ps- lose the outro/intro music and entr'acte too.

If I remember correctly, Myrna Loy was Wyler and Goldwyn's first choice for the role, but because it was really a supporting part, they figured the only way they could get her would be to offer her top billing, which was what happened. Dana Andrews, Fredric March, Teresa Wright, and Harold Russell all have bigger roles.
