She'll be either 91 or 89 today. I hope she's having a good day today.

I'm feeling nostalgic today, I was watching Audrey Hepburn's younger son talk about the new book about her on The Today Show this morning. How quickly time passes........

A very Happy Birthday to Doris Day. She has always been one of my favorite actresses. Whenever I watch one of her movies I feel better. A few of my favorites YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN, CALAMAITY JANE, THE YOUNG AT HEART, LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME, TEACHER`S PET, and IT HAPPENED TO JANE. WE are in a different era in the movies now, and there is no equal to Doris on screen. She is trully missed and deeply appreciated for the joy that she gave us.

The period in Doris Day's career that represented her greatest popularity at the time (the '60s) is, I strongly suspect, the least appreciated chapter today. (All those virgin jokes).

I've always enjoyed her earlier film work. I liked her in those early Warner Brothers comedies she made with people like Michael Curtiz and Jack Carson. But, even more so, I particularly like the glimpse that she provided of her night club career before the movies, recreated by her great singing voice and the authenticity of her presence in Curtiz's wonderful Young Man with a Horn.

Day's best work as an actress, I feel, was when she played Ruth Etting In Love Me Or Leave Me, standing up dramatically to one of the great actors of all time, Jimmy Cagney.

What a memerable glimpse at the jazz world, with Doris Day's voice, Hoagy Carmichael at the piano and Kirk Douglas lip synching to Harry James' horn, in YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN

LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME - not only did Day recreate some great Roaring '20s tunes but she stood up dramatically on screen to James Cagney. Cagney received hate mail from some Day fans in 1955, so convincingly repellent did they find his obsessive gangster portrayal.

I agree. Those are 2 of my favorite DD movies. Leave Me was her peak. It's a shame she didnt even get an Oscar nomination for it. She doesnt have much acting to do in Horn, but her mere presence is enough and I love her singing. I have the soundtracks to both films and play them occasionally......

For years I just assumed that Doris Day got an Oscar nomination for Love Me Or Leave Me so you can image my shock when I later discovered that she hadn't. I guess I can understand the thinking of the Motion Picture Academy at the time, though. She had never had a role previously with any of the dramatic meat that Ruth Etting provided her with. Therefore, this was simply an actress at the time that was NOT regarded as Oscar material, I guess.

But Jimmy Cagney thought the world of her in that film in which she co-starred with him.

Cagney hadn't become familiar with Day when they had made West Point Story together five years before, plus her part in that film had been a trifle.

"But," Cagney wrote, "when we started on Love Me Or Leave Me, I saw something in her I hadn't noticed before, or maybe it was just coming into bloom. I don't know. She had matured into a really exceptional actress, and I told her so. I said, 'You know, girl, you have a quality that I have seen but twice before. There was a gal named Pauline Lord who created the title role in Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie, and I'm also thinking of Laurette Taylor. Both those ladies could really get on there and do it with everything. They could take you apart playing a scene. Now, you're the third one.'

'In thinking about Doris, Pauline Lord and Laurette Taylor, and the single quality they shared . . . and if I had to put that quality into a word, it would be 'unshrewdness.' It is that part of a personality that immediately evokes from an audience that response of 'Isn't that nice?' Walter Catlett had it too: wide open as a barn, no guile at all. Unshrewd. In all of these people there is a beautiful basic simplicity stemming from their lack of guile. And that lack of guile photographs.'

'I'm sure Doris Day has a better business head on her than these people, but she shares with them the quality that makes people seeing such actors say, 'Why, there's a person who wouldn't do anything to hurt me.' This quality, coupled with genuine acting ability, is irresistible to an audience. . . After Love Me Or Leave Me, Doris went into the Pillow Talk things, and I for one have always considered that one hell of a waste.'

Ava Gardner and Jane Russell had been mentioned for the role of Etting, but Cagney suggested Day. He also {for the first time in many years } took second billing because he though that his role was secondary. This was Day's first role after leaving Warners, a role that Jack Warner would never have cast her in. This was perhaps her finest piece of acting ever. I enjoyed in her comedies with Hudson and Grant, but she never had another role like this one.

One thing that may have helped make this film so good was the fact that the three principals Etting, Snyder and Johnny Alderman were still alive and did contributed to the film. Most bio pics are made after the persons have departed this life..

In honor of DD's birthday, I re-watched "Love Me or Leave Me" on DVD last night. I think this is one of her finest works. Some months ago, I recall someone on the boards who considered her among the un-sexy classics actresses. I may only be a hetero female, but I think she oozed sexiness in this film. Also, I'd forgotten how lush the colors were. As for Cagney, even though he played a baddie, his acting talent was such that one also could feel a little sorry for his tough guy character.

Yes, and Etting was so upset with the portrayal that she thought about going to court, but decided not to as it would just bring more publicity with a lawsuit (I'm not sure what exactly she objected to...) George Eels interviewed her for the book Ginger, Loretta and Irene Who? back in the 70s....
