Lon Chaney's WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS

Recommended Posts

Today TCM had an eight film tribute to silent legend Lon Chaney, as well as a TCM produced documentary from 2000, Lon Chaney: A Thousand Faces.

Chaney's 1928 gangster saga, While the City Sleeps, is the only one of Chaney's MGM silents that still exists that the channel has never shown. The documentary had a few clear, quite beautiful clips from the film, though a few others scenes show some problems with decomposition. Still, it is NOT a lost film, unlike London After Midnight and the actor's last silent feature, Thunder.

Would anyone know the reason why TCM never shows While the City Sleeps?

This movie is missing about a reel and a half to two reels. However, so are *THE UNKNOWN* and *LAUGH CLOWN LAUGH* and TCM has aired both of those. Generally, what I hear is the missing footage is the culprit, but those who have seen the film at live venue's say that it doesn't effect the story much. It does need a musical score to be recorded, and a broadcast master.

I would love to see the movie debut on TCM, but the same can be said about numerous other films in the MGM, Warner Brothers, and First National Silents library.

Thanks, gagman. I hadn't heard that as much footage was missing as you stated (two reels being the equivalent to about 20 minutes, I figure). Still, there are a few reviews of it on the IMDb so some have managed to see it and be quite impressed, especially by Chaney's performance.

TCM would definitely get the attention of silent buffs and Chaney admirers if they could have a premiere of this production, which sounds like it was paving the way, along with Von Sternberg's Underworld, for the gangster sagas that would soon be populating early Hollywood talkies.

I'm suprised that we have not seen *UNDERWORLD (Paramount, 1927),* on TCM yet, since it is on DVD from Criterion with a great Robert Israel score.

I was hoping for Underworld on TCM, as well. The Criterion version is a little too expensive for me, so I've yet to see that film, as well as the Chaney vehicle.

Well, you can get the Von Sternberg Silents Box set on Sale frequently for fairly cheap on Amazon, Deep Discount DVD and other places. It's a terrific collection and you get three of the best films of the late 20's, with interesting extras.

Thanks for the suggestions, gagman. But it's $77 in Canada on Amazon. Guess I'm still hoping for TCM.

I paid allot less than that when it was first released. I think I got my copy from DEEP DISCOUNT DVD. That was in August of 2010 if I recall correctly. Hopefully, TCM will be running it one of these days, but I have spoke with Chuck Tabesh about it numerous times. He says that they have to rent the film from Paramount, even though it was released through Criterion. Same with THE LAST COMMAND, and THE DOCKS OF NEW YORK as well.

I never saw a Lon Chaney movie before. And I wish I saw all the movies that were shown today. But I am glad I saw the few that I did. What a remarkable actor. Will definitely look for his movies to be repeated.

PS - I am thrilled with the programing tonight too.

Hey Gagman, if you speak to Charlie Tabesh again soon, ask him what he thinks of this which strikes me as an April Fools gag:

h1. Happy Birthday, Lon Chaney! London After Midnight Found at Last!

Posted on [April 1, 2013|http://www.drfilm.net/blog/?p=419|12:01 am] by [drfilm|http://www.drfilm.net/blog/?author=1|View all posts by drfilm]

Indianapolis, IN–Born April 1, 1883, Lon Chaney was one of the greatest of silent film stars. Best remembered for his roles in Phantom of the Opera (1925) and Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), Chaney was known the world over for his chameleon-like ability to inhabit strange and different roles. One of his most famous was as a vampire in London After Midnight (1927), a film that has not been seen in public since at least 1970, and probably well before. The last known copy perished in a vault fire, and no copies were known to exist in private hands.

Until today.

Preservationist Eric Grayson, who independently seeks out rare films to preserve and share them, discovered a print in a private collection in October.

“Like so many silent film finds, it wasn’t where you’d expect to find it at all,” Grayson said in a telephone interview. “People have been searching for it for decades. There was a rumor that the film had been in San Francisco, in Sweden, or that a French 9.5mm print survived. This was in the basement of a collector in rural Illinois.”

The print, on 35mm safety stock, was a surprise to everyone. As far as anyone knew, no prints had been made since the 1920s.

“This guy was a bigwig in the local theater circuit, and he wanted a print, so he asked MGM, and they made him one. It was struck in 1956, so it’s in good shape and looks better than a lot of the other Lon Chaney pictures that have survived,” Grayson said.

Such things are unusual, but not unique. A 35mm print of Chaney’s West of Zanzibar (1928), printed under similar circumstances, has been bouncing from collector to collector for some years now. Also, Buster Keaton’s The Cameraman (1928), long thought to be lost, showed up in a near-mint 16mm print in a private collection a few years ago.

Grayson stated that the print required a little cleaning and special care, but is essentially projectable as-is. He quietly prepared a special high-definition digital transfer and then had a special card up his sleeve.

London After Midnight will premiere on TCM,” said programming president Charlie Tabesh. “Eric basically blackmailed us to do what he wanted. We didn’t have a choice.”

Grayson, an ardent film preservationist, has been trying to sell an independently made television show for several years now. Entitled Dr. Film, the show promotes film preservation while also being a silly tribute to old-fashioned movie hosts.

“He said he’d sent us several copies of his pilot,” Tabesh said, “but frankly we’d never seen it. Then, when London After Midnight showed up, he called us and said that we weren’t getting it unless it became part of the first Dr. Film episode on TCM.”

Grayson wasn’t kidding. He has wanted to share other films from his collection for years, but runs into a lot of audience apathy. Having dealt with archives for many years, he knew about a special loophole that would cement his case.

“I told them if they didn’t green-light a few episodes of Dr. Film, then I would donate London After Midnight to an archive, with the stipulation that Warner Brothers, the copyright owner, couldn’t access it. There are a lot of films at archives with silly stipulations on them like that, and they have to be honored.”

“Eric is lucky,” said another film collector, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Frankly, his pilot for Dr. Film was awful. He’s so passionate about preserving oddball films that the ones he picked for the pilot episode were just appalling. Sure, they were rare, but who cares? TCM is so stodgy and stuck in its ways that something like his goofy take on Dr. Film would normally just leave them wondering what they were seeing.”

Instead, Grayson has a six-episode commitment from TCM for his new show, headlined by a Lon Chaney retrospective as the first installment. He promises to showcase films that others have ignored and abused over the years.

London After Midnight won’t be the only lost film we show,” Grayson said. “It will just be the most famous one.”

And what of the timing of the announcement? Some might question the revelation on April Fools’ Day.

“Yes,” Grayson said, “but it’s also Lon Chaney’s 130th birthday, so we thought it was appropriate. I can’t show any of the film because of my contractual agreement with TCM, but I’ll put up a YouTube video that should quiet most of the doubts.”

London After Midnight debuts on December 17, the 86th anniversary of the film’s release.

Dr. Film will continue on the next 5 Friday nights afterward on TCM.

“If enough people watch, then TCM will have us do more. I’ve got more movies… we just have to see if people care enough to watch them.”

Naysayers: note this is an original 1950s paper reel band from MGM (below) and a 1920s, NO TRACK MGM Logo. This is exactly what is indicated in the press release.

I saw Mockery, Mr. Wu, Unholy Three and the Documentary about him. The toughest thing was he had a completely different look in each movie. I was wondering what the "real Lon Chaney" looked like.

TCM actually did show London After Midnight during Chaney's SUTS day in 2011, but only in a heavily cut 47 minute version.

The best personal "premiere" for me yesterday was The Blackbird, but I still have to go with The Penalty as my all-time Chaney favorite. IMO Chaney and Barbara Stanwyck are easily the two greatest American actors of all time, matched only by Mifune and Gabin on the international level.

As a trivia note, has there ever been anyone who's been given such a poetic trio of character names as "Blackbird", "Blizzard" (in The Penalty ), and "Echo" (in The Unholy Three )? As soon as I saw those names flashed on the opening cast credits, I just *knew* I was going to be in for a treat.

clore, if it seems too good to be true it usually is. This is hardly the first time that a print of London After Midnight has been "discovered."

Hope my cynicism proves to be wrong.

But, gagman, the next time you talk to Charlie Tabesh, it would be interesting to ask him if there's anything to the story. And while you're at it, you might mention While the City Sleeps, too (unless you've already done that, of course). Oh, what the heck, no harm in giving him a reminder.

Clore,

Thanks for sharing this great April Fool's joke. It's a much funnier read than the last attempt to convince film fans that a print of *London After Midnight* had been found. But like Sid Horror's account, this one, too, is just a fanciful attempt to convince film fans otherwise.

Yes, I had to make sure that I prefaced the piece as being a gag as far as I was concerned. But, I would like to know if Mr. Tabesh has any thoughts about being unwillingly included in the gag. I forget the details of Sid's fraud of a few years ago, but I don't recall his attributing any quotes to any particular persons.

I'm not one to play practical jokes, although I'm certainly a punster. I just don't believe it's fair to draw someone into the gag without their permission just because one thinks it will make it more credible.

> I forget the details of Sid's fraud of a few years ago, but I don't recall his attributing any quotes to any particular persons.

Sid's fraud didn't include any attributed quotes but he did include a call to action for his readers to call a certain archive in the City of Angels and demand they search their records and inventory for the film.

From what I understand, the phone rang constantly for a few days with calls from irate film fans wanting to know why this wasn't priority one and why was the archive not interested in finding this particular film in their vaults.

The archive certainly had its hands full and Sid Horror got a great big laugh at it all.

Well, "Dr. Film" is Eric Grayson. So that's about all you need to know about this.

Very clever 'tho.

But how would message board users feel about a "Dr. Film" segment airing regularly on TCM?

Read more about "Dr. Film" and his sidekick "Anamorphia" here:

http://www.drfilm.net/characters.html'>http://www.drfilm.net/characters.html'>http://www.drfilm.net/characters.html'>http://www.drfilm.net/characters.html

Examples of what he is trying to sell (has sold?) TCM here:

http://www.drfilm.net/

BTW, Grayson writes that this is different than "Mystery Science Theater 3000."

Interesting to see if this makes it to Tabesh... I mean, it's already reached the TCM Message Board... Clever way to market yourself...

Of course, what Grayson writes about could be all true. (This is my out... :P )

Time will tell... December 17 and the following five Friday nights on TCM...

Grayson has written about his blog on Facebook:

h5. "OK, it's past midnight now, and I have to report that of all the blog posts I've tracked, the APRIL FOOL on London After Midnight got more traffic than any other post. The most poignant was a response by a regular reader who told me that he could believe I'd find London After Midnight, but the idea that TCM would pick up Dr. Film stretched the whole joke too far!"

So there you go...

And I have some pie on my weaselly face for adding an out in my comment below for even thinking it may be true... Oh well... (The "Dr. Film" show is real 'tho... Grayson is looking for somebody to pick it up...)

Well, Grayson didn't bring it to the board, I did. My reason was to bring it to the attention of Chuck Tabesh. Were I in his position, I'd let Mr. Grayson know that not only didn't I enjoy being made part of his scam, but that he'd be hearing from my lawyers about my being misrepresented.

And on top of that, he can well count on Dr. Film never being mentioned, let alone seen on any of the Turner channels.

I had never even heard of this guy until I found the link on another site last night and you can bet your butt that I will never be checking out his site again. If he has to resort to such tactics to generate traffic, he doesn't deserve it.

Thanks, RMeingast, for confirming that it was an April Fool's joke.

Even though I was very cynical about the legitimacy of the report, there is a part of me that is also disappointed that it was a rather cleverly crafted put on.

As a film fan and Chaney fan, I'm like that international diplomat at the end of Lost Horizon who says that he believes there is a Shangri-La because he wants to believe it.

Call me a sucker but I believe that there may be a copy of London After Midnight buried in a vault that has yet to be discovered because I want to believe it.

Maybe . . . one day. Err, hope they make that sooner rather than later. I'm no spring chicken, you know.

No offence, Clore. I just meant that the fact we're discussing it at all on the message board means that Mr. Grayson has succeeded to some extent.

Not blaming you at all and sorry to see you ticked...

I'm running away now...

Call me a sucker but I believe that there may be a copy of London After Midnight buried in a vault that has yet to be discovered because I want to believe it.

You're hardly a sucker, but you are representative of thousands of film fans around the world who wish this to be true. It's a Holy Grail to many of us and a gag like this just exploits this to the point of shamelessness.

From my perspective, it also destroys any street cred that the guy has, but maybe I'm a prude and don't see the value of one day per year giving people an excuse to be bumholes.

I got an email from the Warner Archive yesterday, and it stated in the subject line that one could "win a trip to the Warner Archives." Upon opening it said "April Fool, but take 25% off selected titles anyway."

It may be a while before I order from them again. Not that I expected to win a trip to the Archives, but I don't like bait-and-switch advertising and I was in marketing for 30 years. I don't consider it any less of an affront than having Macy's proclaiming a 75% off sale on all merchandise, then having throngs of people enter the store on that day to see a big "April Fools" sign hanging across the doorway.

No offense was taken. Mr. Grayson may have succeeded in making his site known, but for what purpose? For me, he'll now only be known as the perpetrator of a ruse. He may have gotten some jollies **** in public, but I wonder if he's causing many to turn away from his site in the long run.

EDITED TO ADD:

By the way, his web page that I linked to still makes no mention of it being a fraud. So, how long will this "finding" be perpetuated and why didn't he update that page rather than his Facebook page?

TCM should insist on an apology or some kind of acknowledgment that it's "all in fun."
