Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon, Richard Troxell

And what, you may ask, does any of these people have to do with the movies? Well, except they've all been in them, at least once.

The duet between Jimmy Fallon and Jay Leno on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" on April 1 was dubbed by two professional singers, and one (the Jay Leno voice) was a friend of mine, opera star Richard Troxell. He starred as Pinkerton in the movie of "Madame Butterfly" directed by Frédéric Mitterand about 18 years ago, the most beautiful movie you'll ever see, with the most glorious voices. Siskel and Ebert gave it Two Thumbs Up when it was first shown, not just as an opera movie, but as a magnificent picture on its own. It was the start of Richard's career. He beat out 200 tenors who were vying for the part. It's still the definitive Butterfly. Later he made another picture, the opera "Cyrano de Bergerac," singing the role of Christian, with Roberto Alagna singing Cyrano.

Richard is not only the best voice around ... it's thrilling, to say the least ... but he's gorgeous as well, and a wonderful guy. Everybody who knows him loves him. It was such a huge thing to his friends and family and admirers that we all e-mailed the Today Show to set Matt Lauer and Al Roker straight about who sang the number. They thought it was Jay himself! I don't know what they were thinking. Anyway they got a tremendous amount of press out of that duet. It was played all over the place Tuesday.

I hope this does it for Richard. He sings the best of the tenor repertoire all over the world, loves his job. He's married to a dancer/choreographer and takes his wife and boys with him wherever he sings. He just gets better and better year after year. If he comes to your town, be sure and see him. He's singing the Star Spangled Banner on April 7th at Camden Yards, if you're going to the ball game. Here's the Love Duet from "Butterfly:"

Richard Troxell will be interviewed on "EXTRA!" tomorrow night, April 5, about the voice-over he did for Jay Leno. He'll also be hitting a high note on the streets of New York. And can he hit a high note! We're all so happy about the exposure he's been getting for this gig.

You're welcome! Unfortunately I won't be able to see all of EXTRA!, ironic that it may be. Makes me miserable that I'll probably miss his part of it. The Merrie Monarch Hula Festival is preempting part of that show tonight. They did last night, anyway. I'm optimistic that they may not do it early in the show, and I may see it anyway. But we have so many people who love Richard that I'm sure one of them can send me a recording of it.

I for one wouldn't mind seeing TCM show *Americathon*.

Fascinating, Doherty.

By now, if one googles "who dubbed for Jay Leno", Richard's name should feature prominently. Nada.

Additionally, if one googles "Richard Troxell" - nada about the dubbing.

What a world, most people probably thought he did the singing himself. I knew he didn't, but am I right in thinking Fallon did his own singing?

So, Jay, why aren't you having Richard on your show?

They are talking about youth and demographics and money and an utter disregard for old people. 60 is the new old.

Leno is innocuous, as Carson was before him, and excelled at being a backdrop for often fascinating guests. The current idiots in charge of the networks want edgy and foul-mouthed and sarcastic and smarmy and young. As are their guests.

Hence Fallon and Kimmel and Meyers et al. Dave and Craig are good at faking all of the above and thus are the old young.

Best thing to do, leo? Watch TCM when it's showing a b/w movie or a good movie on one of the pay channels and then go to sleep. If you haven't seen Letterman or Fallon or Kimmel or 90% of the current million channel television lineup, you haven't missed a thing.

I don't know for certain, but it sure sounded like an opera singer dubbing for Fallon. I have a feeling they got them both from the New York City Opera, where Richard is singing in "La Perichole." Just a hunch. I'll find out.

Someone close to the Tonight Show, who is also a Troxell fan, called over there and asked if they could put him on. The lady in the creative department said no go for now, but they're keeping his information in case they want to book him later.

One great thing is that this has spread so far that musical directors from opera companies all over the world have heard Richard now. Since opera is live that doesn't happen too often. I know it sounds extravagant, but during my long life I've heard all the greats, and in my opinion he's up there with all of them except maybe Jussi Bjorling, and he stands alone. Catch this:
