Glenda Jackson speech today

>I got a kick of the Wonkette's headline about Glenda literally ripping into Thatcher's mouldering corpse. I doubt even the most severe critic of Maggie would want to see that.

Yep Mr.Froy, I see I wasn't the only one who noticed the misapplication of the word literally there instead of the correct word of figuratively.

(...btw...my guess is that the "Wonkette" is a college graduate of approximately 28 years young, because I hear and read this sort of "English" used by SO many of our youth of today, and even those who otherwise could be considered "well educated")

After doing a little internet digging (figuratively), Wonkette is actually a web magazine

with a satirical bent, so maybe the literally was on purpose, though I'm doubtful. I have

my own troublesome grammar points, but the difference between literally and figuratively

has always been pretty clear. It does lead to some humorous sentences, as in the one

about Glenda Jackson's speech. Yeah, what's that smell coming from the House of

Commons?

They did make up for it with the other header I skipped over before--Parliament But Not

Funkadelic. Now that's a good one. :)

> {quote:title=Swithin wrote:}{quote}This video by Member of Parliament Glenda Jackson will shock some; if so, my apologies. But it is a speech made by a woman who won the Best Actress Oscar twice about a woman who was the subject of a film in which she was depicted by an actress who won Best Actress for her performance. And please keep in mind that the UK House of Commons is in many ways a much less dainty place than the US Congress.

Meryl Streep was brilliant as Margaret Thatcher.

I had originally posted the video from a UK newspaper, but it was slow to load. I found Wonkette, which I had never heard of, but which loaded quickly, so that's the one I posted. It also had the most sensational headline! But the clip of our Glenda is now viral in all UK papers.

Today's Independent has an article about Glenda in which she says: "I had to speak out to stop history being re-written." Makes sense.

An interesting (I think) aside. I saw the musical *Billy Elliot* in London in 2005. There's a line in one of the songs, sung by the miners: "Every day's a good day because it's one day closer to Margaret Thatcher's death." I wondered then whether they would keep that line in, when Mrs. Thatcher died. Well, I heard they left it in.

I had heard of Wonkette, but I thought it was just a poltical blogger and

not a much larger operation. I can imagine her speech going viral, it's a

rather intense critique. It's only natural that when political leaders die

there are many hosannas immediately following and that things become

more balanced as time passes and reality sets in.

I guess Americans didn't realize there was such hostility to Thatcher in

her native country. Morrissey recorded a song titled Margaret on the Guillotine

in the late 1980s. It ends with the sound effect of a guillotine of course.

>Dow at record high? When can I buy in Oahu?

Well, just sell some of your shares of those Blue Chip stocks you've been holding and then contact one of those realtors you see on that HGTV program titled "Hawaii Life", and as fast as you can say "Aloha", your dream will come to fruition.

(...just don't tell me that you decided to quit the Market forever when the Dow was down to under 6,000 during W's final year in office, 'cause only a FOOL would've done THAT!!!!)

LOL

Streep was indeed magnificent as Margaret Thatcher. But my favorite Streep performance of all is as Isak Dineson (aka Baroness Blixen) in Out of Africa. But Glenda's performance as Gudrun Brangwen, the free-spirited Derbyshire lass, is up there with the best of them.

Who is that handsome parliamentarian who speaks at the end of the video?

Give me a good parliamentarian with nice hair and smooth voice and I am won over. I wonder if John Bercow has a fan page?

Later Note: He's a right-wing Conservative! He couldn't get elected, so he's doing the speaker post. Doesn't have a fan page.

How did Meryl Streep get into this discussion? Oh, yeah; she plays a Prime Minister better than the actual article of the 80's. Biggest difference is Glenda Jackson wasn't acting- she was telling the chamber the history of the Iron Lady who the Lords thought they could ramrod into British canonization. When your policies hurt others, don't imagine it's forgotten with your death.

I will remain on the side of the historians.

In Westminster Abbey, there is a magnificent memorial to a knighted member who was in the British Army, in service to the East India Company. Tea was to Britain in the 17th-19th Century as oil is today. Sir "What's his name" protected the Tea Company, as it did it corporate raiding of the world markets in their time. The fancy memorial doesn't change the history of the brutality of suppressing the local populations into doing the bidding of the corporate overlords. He was a big guy at his time, but do we remember him?

*Link to a very funny article with a great classic film connection. Apparently Ding! Dong! The Witch is Dead! is currently #4 most requested song on BBC Radio in Britain. There's an aggressive campaign to make it #1.*

Addie, That is hilarious! Casablancalover, Bercow started out as right-wing (which doesn't mean exactly the same thing in the UK as it does here), but he has gradually moved to the left, to the extent that there were rumors of his defection to the Labour Party.

A lot has happened in this thread since yesterday!

OK, first; Although I knew they're not related, and I never confused the two, I always thought ANN JACKSON and GLENDA looked enough alike to be sisters.

Diefying presidents? Some just can't help it. I know right-wingers who still diefy Dubya, and hard core right wingers who were absolutely disgusted with him. Hard to figure sometimes.

Never having followed British politics much( our OWN political theater having more effect on my life), I had no idea that Thatcher was as disliked as she apparently seemed to be.

As far as our economy goes, I'm afraid my grades in Economy class in school will betray my knowledge( or lack thereof) about how it all works. MY belief was, that the higher the DOW AVERAGE was, the BETTER the economy is doing. And as the Dow was sinking down to below 8,000 when Bush left office, and it's now around, what did Dargo say...15,000, it seems to be doing a bit better. But in MY situation ( retiree ), it makes no matter. My pension saw an increase of a whopping THREE DOLLARS a month in the last year and a half!

But I STILL feel Glenda's speech would have been better suited BEFORE Ms. Thatcher died, rather than immediately AFTER.

This is Glenda, working a power mullet and an insulated housedress, posing w/ Oscar #1 in 1971 (she did not attend ceremony)

God the seventies were the worst.

>But I STILL feel Glenda's speech would have been better suited BEFORE Ms. Thatcher died, rather than immediately AFTER.

Ahem...Sepia...5'll getcha 10(either in good ol' American Greenbacks OR in Pound sterling) that Glenda has been rantin' about Maggie for YEARS!

THIS whole latest rhubarb just boils down to that old thing that many people cling to that "One is suppose to speak reverentially of the newly deceased", THAT'S all!

YOU know! Kinda like THIS...

OH...btw...I forgot to mention that there HAVE of course been occasions were it's been deemed socially acceptable to celebrate one's demise...such as Groucho dancing the Charleston over Hilter's grave, and after a certain compound in Abbottabad(not named after Lou's old comedy partner, I hear) was raided by Navy Seal Team 6.

(...but other than THOSE instances and maybe a few others which don't readily spring to mind here, I understand we the living are all supposed to act like the recently deceased never made a mistake in their lives...it's just the "classy" thing to do, ya see!!!)

Just goes to show that Maggie is giving more pleasure to more people dead

than she did when alive. That's a rare talent. For those who didn't like Glenda's

peroration, you won't have her to kick around (figuratively speaking) much longer.

She has said that she will not stand for the next scheduled election in 2015,

as she will be almost eighty years old and it's time for someone else to get a

chance. Maybe this will be remembered as her finest hour.

>She has said that she will not stand for the next scheduled election in 2015,

Well then, she's certainly not alone in her feelings THERE, anyway!

'Cause I "can't stand" ANY election when it rolls around THESE here parts anymore EITHER!!!

(...uh huh...ESPECIALLY all those freakin' mind-numbing, facts-challenged 30 second ads they run on my TV set during that time...and I got a feelin' I'm not alone here, eh Mr.Froy?!!) ;)

Yep, it's especially bad if one lives in a toss-up state. You can't get away

from them. At least there will be a reprieve for the next few years until it

starts all over again.

I noticed that the camera would pull back every once in a while to show

the whole House and how few folks were actually there. I recall when

members of the U.S. House would give after hours speeches. There would

be a close-up as they went on and on. Then someone decided to pull the

camera back and you'd see the place was almost completely empty. Funny.

Americans might have the mistaken notion that the British Parliament is more dainty and polite than our houses of congress. Not so. There is a rich tradition of booing, name calling, etc., en masse. I think one of the few things you are NOT allowed to do is shout out that the speaker is a "fool." There wasn't a big attendance on Glenda's side of the house when she gave her speech, because many Labour MPs -- who would be sitting on that side of the house -- did not come at all to a Margaret Thatcher day. In any event, Glenda's remarks have been more widely covered than anyone else's!

I've only seen the question time and that could get quite raucous. I always got a kick

out of the undertone while someone is speaking, a general murmur in the background,

few indidvidualwords, just that noise. And some of the names of the constituencies are

rather humorous. And there is also that sarcastic politness that many members use--Does

my right honorable colleague actually believe, etc. I haven't watched it in years, I'll have to

start again. I also recall that the PM (at that time it was Tony Blair) had a thick notebook

he would refer to while the Tories kept jabbering.

I didn't realize that this was a session called for the purpose of remembering Thatcher.

That does explain why there were so few Labour members present.
