hamradio
Holding a rare 16 inch Vitaphone disc. Takes a wide turntable and is played inside out. Speed is 33 1/3 - thanks to the Rose Marie short, never could have figured that out.
hamradio
Some more Vitaphone photos. Notice the long tonearm and where he's placing it - near the center at the <Start> mark that is inscribed on the disc. Projector had to been threaded to the <Picture Start>. The slightest mistake will cause the movie to be out of sync, the major drawback of the technology. Detail
hamradio
Dual mode projector can play both Vitaphone and optical sound on film. Notice the front mounted shutter (careful with one's fingers...ouch) Closeup of optical sound head, notice the selector switch Cutting lathe (hate those watermarks) Lab perfecting the system. hamradio
Hard to find photo of a Western Electric Disc Reproducer (simply a record player). Tone arms are shorter versions of those used in the Vitaphone system. Trivia...one can be seen in "Dora's Dunking Donuts" but it's barely noticeable.
hamradio
This is Bill Garity operating a Powers Cinephone sound camera. This is the very unit that recorded the soundtrack for "Steamboat Willie" (1928).
hamradio
There has been so many variations of sound on film since it's introduction. Far as standard optical soundheads go, haven't change much since the late 1920's... The lens / slit aperture that focuses the fine slit of light onto the soundtrack. All this changed when Dolby developed digital sound.

Dargo
Steve McQueen and his buddy, movie stunt-rider and fellow motorcycle racer Bud Ekins, discussing the chase scene in The Great Escape between takes. (...due to movie execs and insurance concerns about McQueen attempting the famous barbed wire fence jump, it would actually be Ekins you'd see performing the jump in the finished film)
