hamradio
"War of the Worlds" introduction. George Pal, left, with Sir Cedric Hardwicke, who narrated the film, at a recording session. Pal thought it appropriate that an English voice speak Wells's words.

I love it for a number of reasons. The effects are top-notch for the time, I think. The suspense keeps me on the edge of my seat. I really love the ending. Sir Cedric Hardwicke says that when all of our weapons had failed to destroy the martians, it was the little things that God, in His infinite wisdom, put upon this Earth.

Sir Cedric Hardwicke says that when all of our weapons had failed to destroy the martians, it was the little things that God, in His infinite wisdom, put upon this Earth. H.G. Wells was a genius in that the Earth itself has an immune system. This is why landing on alien worlds IF any has life is a very bad idea. The organisms there will do to us what the Earth microbes did to the Martians. Realistically if the Martians were as intelligent the movie portrayed "mental giants" such beings would had sent probes to find out what the conditions are on Earth before making that one way trip the hovercraft had no way of returning. Some fun facts, WOTW seems to be the first sci fi to employ shields. The weapons on opposite sides are plasma cannons - a term long since to be coined. The mind blower is their camera that went into the collapse house. That has became reality and one lab is experimenting with the same snake like cable. Funny our present day cameras are WAY smaller than that one in the movie. Magnetic levitation has also become reality. That hovercraft design is still amazing even by today's standards.
hamradio
Forgot to include nuclear powered craft. Ironic the Martians sent theirs to Earth in fiction, we returned the favor in reality.

Ava did a cameo in "The Band Wagon" movie starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. She had a very brief scene with Fred. 1

Both are supporting players but they get a good amount of screen time. This 1949 crime\romance film stars Barbara Stanwyck, James Mason, Van Heflin and these two very beautiful gals. 1
