The vast majority of the August 2013 Schedule - Summer Under The Stars

As far as I can see I have three empty slots -

1 for Catherine Deneuve - I don't know her work so I'm not embarrassed about that one.

1 for Glenda Farrell as there is too much room after her Gold Diggers of 37 for there to not be one more.

1 for Bette Davis - how embarrassing that I couldn't find that one.

Pretty good lineup. It's just strange that The Searchers is listed under Natalie Wood's day since she is only in the end of the movie.

Corrections, additions, and comments are welcome as usual.

Thanks to TopBilled for getting most of the stars figured out in advance and completely figuring out Hattie McDaniel's day.

We're getting better representation of Fox players due to the expanded deal between Fox and TCM, but Paramount and Universal remain elusive.

I happily second that applause!

This is one of my favorite movies made by Don Ameche. That it has Gene Tierney and Charles Coburn make it very extra special.

> 1 for Bette Davis - how embarrassing that I couldn't find that one.

How embarassing that I can barely navigate these boards at all. :D Seriously, Calvin, thank you so much for our monthly round of coming attractions. It's much appreciated.

I still think it's a less-than-thrilling edition of SUTS (at least for me), but I don't want to complain too much. I've wanted to see The Macomber Affair and Men Are Not Gods for some time. Ruggles of Red Gap is always welcome. And it's lovely to see Heaven Can Wait having its TCM debut - a truly *gorgeous* film. On my birthday, too!

When I saw that Ann Blyth was being featured, I had a split-second hope of finally getting an opportunity to see A Woman's Vengeance, but, alas, twas not to be. :(

Now then - Sylvia Sidney for SUTS 2014!

What, too soon? ;)

Calvinme, thanks very much for your hard investigative work in pulling together the August schedule for us.

Highlight of the month for me will be on Gregory Peck Day when, finally(!!!), TCM has scheduled *THE MACOMBER AFFAIR.*

This has remained the rarest of all film adaptions of a Hemingwork work to see.

An intelligently scripted, well acted tale of a troubled married couple seeking escape with a hunting expedition on the African plains, this Zoltan Korda-directed film has long been curiously absent from any kind of viewing. For fans of Peck, Macomber Affair remains the foremost film of his career that many have yet to see, though it can be argued that the film is even more of a triumph for his two co-stars, Joan Bennett and Robert Preston.

The tagged on Hollywood ending can be criticized but all that has preceded it makes this film a strong candidate for being one of the two best screen adaptions (along with Michael Curtiz's Breaking Point) of Hemingway.

I will definitely be recording this one.

Some pleasant surprises included. A majority of the Jeanne Crain films are from her starring days under contract at Fox in the 40s and 50s. Also, some Fox rarities , including two screwball comedies during Mary Boland's daY; HE MARRIED HIS WIFE and DANGER-LOVE AT WORK; THIS ABOVE ALL, during Joan Fontaine's day; and besides HEAVEN CAN WAIT, there's GREEN GRASS OF WYOMING and A ROYAL SCANDAL during Charles Coburn's day....although there could have been more Fox films on Henry Fonda's and Gregory Peck's days.

He outright won the Oscar for it, Best Supporting Actor, 1965 (his one and only nomination/win, I think.)

ps- THANK YOU TCM FOR NOT SHOWING IT! It is a tedious, painful film and there was a period 4 or so years ago where it was on *a lot.* Like weekly a lot. Like I wanted to go all Elvis '68 on the TV everytime I heard that little brat start to sing " a thousand clowns... "

Hasn't anyone noticed a very rare film to be shown on August 31 as part of the Rex Harrison tribute day: ESCAPE [1948] directed by Joseph Mankiewicz ? I don't recall this movie ever being shown on television; cable or not.

I wanted to reach for my revolver every time I heard him cry out for *MUHH* - ree. I haven't watched that piece of dreck for over 40 years and that whiny voice still grates in my memory.

I did mention this movie, as part of a block of 20th Century Fox films that Rex did in the 40s featureed in the evening, beginning with the Essential ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM. Also featuring Fox contractee Peggy Cummins, it was actually filmed in England to take advantage of the studio's assets frozen by the British government.

Thanks for the listings, calvinnme! I'm quite pleased as there are a good number of films I already like, or have been curious to see, or am not familiar with so they will be new experiences.

Of course, I'm especially delighted about The Umbrellas of Cherbourg being scheduled. Though a smidge disappointed that The Man in the White Suit won't be shown again on Guinness' day since my recording lost the satellite signal halfway through; also wish that somehow Blithe Spirit could show on Harrison' day. But it will be summer and sometimes that can beat a day of TV, yes?

ETA P.S. I've recorded Heaven Can Wait from FMC but not yet watched. It looks like I should!
