edgedrv
Just got to watch this 1968 musical the other day on DVD. As usual WB did a great job with sound and picture. Although the film boasts a wonderful musical score I always felt the running time was excessive. On the excellent commentary track director Coppola bemoans the fact that the film does run too long. Since he was an young director (this was his second film) he didn't have any control over the editing of the movie. Although the director tends to repeat himself a bit I enjoyed this commentary very much. One interesting thing I did not know was that Astaire wanted Barrie Chase to play the part of Susan the Silent. Astaire wasn't at all in agreement with Coppola's choice of the actress/dancer to play that did play the part.
tmsenzig
I got the DVD shortly after it came out, and I'll agree--it looks fabulous. Far above and beyond the VHS which had been in circulation for so many years prior. Speaking of FINIAN, I see that Rhino's limited edition (2500 copies) has sold out and is no longer available. Why did they just limit it to 2500 copies? They should have done a full release of this (and also the MAME soundtrack) like they did with GYPSY in 2003. Good thing I got my copy of the FINIAN soundtrack last year right after it came out. Also have FINIAN on LP, so I'm set. At least Collector's Choice Music took it upon themselves to license MAME for another CD release after Rhino's supply ran out, and it's still available.
