TCM is not doing right by other film genre fans...

Recommended Posts

besides the 1930s and 40s crime drama and film noir films. If that's what you like then TCM has it for you in abundance. What about sci-fi though? Oh occasionally they'll run a hammer sci-fi horror vehicle like Five Million Years To Earth. They do seem quite fond however of the Charles H. Schneer-Ray Harryhausen-Fred Sears approach to the genre of science fiction. I myself have always prefered the Universal-International William Alland-Jack Arnold offerings like This Island Earth and The Land Unknown. The Alland-Arnold group has always had the better claim as most genuine couch potato-space cadet types like myself will attest. It is quite obvious that TCM is more predisposed towards the Schneer-Harryhausen-Sears brand of films like Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers or The Day the World Exploded. Now AGAIN TCM is gonna run *Creature From The Black Lagoon* this week for the umpteenth time in the last 6 months. Fine! That's just fine...but why can't they show the sequel *Revenge of the Creature* which is far more exciting than the first film? I don't give a heck if they ever show The Creature Walks Among Us but they could and should at least show the much more exciting Revenge of the Creature. I don't think that's asking for too much. I mean to keep showing Creature From The Black Lagoon over and over and over again, again and again without ever showing the 2 sequels is just dumb.

Every Thursday evening all month long is Creature Feature Thursday which includes sci-fi films. TCM offers up sci-fi genre films on a fairly regular basis as they do westerns as well.

But you're not answering my question which is given all the times that TCM has shown Creature From The Black Lagoon lately, shouldn't they show the sequel Revenge Of The Creature *at least ONCE??? ]:)* I..uh...think they should. I mean if TCM programmers think the first film is so much a landmark item that they have to keep scheduling it for repeated showings then why not the sequel????? I mean thousands of showings of Forbidden Planet for tribute but not one showing of Revenge of the Creature for defense. :P

The answer is really very simple. They can't show it because, for whatever reason, TCM can't get the rights to it from Universal. Most likely, some other cable network has the rights locked up (even if they aren't showing the film right now). I don't doubt for a minute that if the rights become available to TCM the programmers will schedule REVENGE OF THE CREATURE.

I believe that you do not understand the process. They do not negotiate and contract for each showing. They pay for a license which permits x+ airings within y+ months. It is probable that the owners of this movie have a set minimum license because it is so very popular movie and is easy for them to find a buyer. To meet that minimum license price and maintain a reasonable cost per showing requires negotiating as many airings as possible.

To license a different movie requires separate negotiations and contract.

It is in this way that the showing of one movie has no relationship in reality with showing or not showing a different movie.

TCM selects less science fiction and fantasy movies than I wish to watch but I believe there is good representation considering the ratio of sf/f movies and non-sf/f movies created.

I was particularly happy that they choose to air: *Night of the Comet* (1984) as it is the type of camp humor mixed with terror which I enjoy but which is rarely produced.

*" I myself have always prefered the Universal-International William Alland-Jack Arnold offerings like This Island Earth and The Land Unknown."* - FBT

When you read "Universal", you have your answer. Getting materials from Universal is a hit-or-miss prospect for TCM. What may appear to be TCM's indifference toward a particular title is actually the evidence of a problem on the studio's part. For all we know, there may not be a digital copy ready for TCM's use. It was discussed in a different thread that Universal suffered a much greater loss of films from their television rental library in the fire a few years ago than they first admitted. When was the last time you saw the sequel on TV?

*"I mean if TCM programmers think the first film is so much a landmark item that they have to keep scheduling it for repeated showings then why not the sequel?"*

I don't know 'bout that. If TCM took to showing *Superman* because of its iconic status, do you really think TCM is obligated to show all the sequels to that film too? Thankfully the sequels to *Jaws* have never been seen on TCM.

*"You mean to say that Revenge of the Creature may no longer be?"* - FBT

No. Not at all. I only meant that the studio may not have a copy of the film in a format that TCM can use. Has the sequel ever been put on DVD? If not, Universal may not have a digital master copy of the film ready for TCM or for making DVDs. If the sequel only exists on film right now, TCM can't show it.

The fire damaged many copies of films that the studio sends to TV stations, schools, film societies, etc. But no film was "lost" outright. All the negatives and master prints stil survive.

I am very sorry that I can not explain it in terms which are easy to understand. I believed I had adequately summarized the issue when I stated: "the showing of one movie has no relationship in reality with showing or not showing a different movie."

I am sorry also that I know of no source of information which might provide a suitable explanation which can be more clearly understood.

> {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote}TCM seems to show a good share of sci fi films. If anything, they come up a bit short in the noir area.

I can't say I'd complain too much about the lack of noirs since most of what they haven't shown in that category is more likely a matter of permissions than anything else. But the dearth of foreign films is another matter. Given that there are likely about 50 first rate foreign movies for every worthwhile sci-fi programmer, the near-total relegation of that former category to the wee hours of Monday morning is a far worse "crime" than any lack of Robby the Robots and flying saucers, entertaining as those might be in very small doses.

All that said, we all have our pet genres, and if FlyBack favors aliens and hydra-headed humanoids over dramas about real people, who am I to say he's missing a screw somewhere?

All three Creature movies were released together on DVD in October 2004; they were part of the Universal Monsters Legacy collections. I own all of the Legacy collections and they are excellent.

*Five Million Years to Earth* is a great film. One of the great, apropos lines in movie history is when Barbara Shelley sees the grasshopper creature being carried out of the Hobbs End tube station and shouts "Oh God!" (A good double entendre, partly because she's shocked and partly because it is her God).

I'm waiting for TCM to have a festival of Mexican horror films. *The Brainiac* needs to be seen by the TCM audience, not just because of the genre but because it's got the greatest tongue in movies!:

Wait a minute, Andy. I prefer beef over seafood, but I STILL like the occasional orange roughy.

And I prefer dramas about real people but still have a taste for the occasional three headed monster and invading spaceship.

What Fly is trying to say, I think, and in keeping with my sophmoric attempt at metaphor, that ALWAYS having orange roughy when getting away from beef can get dull. Maybe I'd want it to be pearch. Or cod.

But it also seems to me, Fly, that others here have explained WHY the same-old, same-old is always shown. So give it a REST already!
