THE RAINS CAME

I do so love that picture. Myrna Loy saying to George Brent, "Who's the pale copper Apollo?" looking at Tyrone Power. The monsoon. The little maharani with the Russian accent. Wonderful picture. I liked George Brent's world-weary rascal. He was nothing like that, I gather from his friends and family. He was a great story-teller and jokester. He flew his own plane and when he was on the outs with Warner's for some slight he would buzz their locations. He also had a very big yacht and would sail it to Maui once a year and spend months here with the family.

I've got the movie recorded and I'm off to watch it right now. I've worked hard all day at a project and I'm ready to fade into the magical dark of my living room and soak up India.

Can't believe you posted this! My husband and I were just talking about how much we

love this movie. Everyone in it is fabulous -- even Tyrone Power who I am not normally

a fan of. Myrna going from snarky rich ***** to floor scrubbing saint! George Brent giving

an incredible performance along with newbie Brenda Joyce and, of course, "old reliables" like

Maria Oupenskaya, Jane Darwell, Mary Nash, H. B. Warner and Henry Travers. Nigel Bruce

playing against type. Floods, plagues -- who could ask for anything more????

Dothery, I've always been quite fond of The Rains Came, as well.

Lovely exotic sounding music, incredible sets and costumes, and an eye popping cast of stars and character players. And all climaxing with a still impressive special effects display of earthquake and flood. In addition to which, George Brent gives a genuinely charming performance as a cynical man of the world type, the most interesting actor in the film, as far as I'm concerned. (Though you also have the rare opportunity to see Nigel Bruce play a dislikable character).

Above all, though, The Rains Came is great eye candy, with some of the best matte paintings if its era. It's Hollywood's idea of India, and what a great visual treat it is.

This is a great and enjoyable film, but I do wish some of it had been pre-code so I could have understood the Myrna Loy character better when I first saw it. It took several viewings for me to get it and understand what was going on behind the scenes. She seemed so proper all the time.

That segment with her and the drinking glass is really outstanding. Very well produced, directed, photographed, edited, and acted. AND the music during that sequence is so great. It was all so artistic, and done without any words of dialogue at all. When the camera dollies to the left, showing the second water glass hidden behind the pitcher, that is just a wonderful scene.

Fred, I remember many years ago when I first saw the film, the scene of Myrna drinking from the glass gave me the chills. funny, each time I see the film, I keep saying to myself, don't drink that glass of water! I Love this film so much, it's a favorite. Photographed beautifully, it's an A+ film. The only thing that always bothered me was Tyrone telling George that Myrna had lost the will to fight. In her deathbed scene when she asks George what's the point, did Maria O change her mind., George doesn't answer. He should have said Yes, to maybe give her the will to hold on.( of course it wouldn't have helped, and the impact of the ending wouldn't be there, but I would have lied)

lavenderblue and Fred, I don't know how faithful the screenplay was to the Louis Bromfield novel. Quite frankly, while I enjoy watching the cast, I can't say that I find the story to be particularly gripping.

Certain Myrna's character had to pay a double price at the end since the film was made during the production code era. Since 1) her character had been a "bad woman" no matter how ladylike Loy played her and 2) she fell in love with (heavens!!!) "a copper Apollo." Therefore, Myrna was pretty well doomed even if her character did try to reform before the film's end.

LOL, yes, I think you are right. Also, she told Brent that she married her old husband for the money, which wives were not supposed to admit back in those days. :)

Tom, if a poster hadn't read your previous post, one would think you didn't enjoy the film as much as that previous post reads. I haven't read the original source so don't know what changes if any were made, and yes I agree Myrna was doomed. I especially agree with you about George Brent. One of his very best roles and I also always think about Nigel's character being so unlikeable. I think it's an engrossing, special film, even with some story flaws.

lavenderblue, my first posting reflects the general overall enthusiasm that I feel for The Rains Came, based on its drop dead gorgeous production values. My second posting reflects the fact that its story and characterizations are the least of the film's virtues (though, having said that, the cast is still fun to watch in their roles).

Any film with a shot of Maria Ouspenskaya smoking her cigarette in a long cigarette holder like this is okay with me:

..which wives were not supposed to admit back in those days.

Maybe they didn't admit it, but they did anyway !

Although, I'd have to say, more often then not, I have seen in old movies were women are quite open about 'finding a rich husband', which has always surprised me ! :)

As far as The Rains movie, I thought Brenda Joyce (Fern) was excellent. Her voice and diction reminded me very much of Marilyn Monroe's voice. :)

Yes, I got that Tom. Just wanted others to be sure they read that first posting of yours. I was so hoping you'd answer my post and restate how much you enjoy this film. ;) You are so spot on about the Outstanding Production, and of couse Maria, and that cigarette! On the George Brent thread, another poster writes he did not like the film, especially wanted him and others who have not seen the film to read *YOUR* take on the film. I respect your taste in films so much, and most times fully agree with you.

I have always enjoyed this movie, for the many reasons listed here. I looked for a thread on this a couple nights ago, didn't find one or want to start one, so I posted on its remake in the thread about material that would make good remakes now. I am copying (and slightly changing) that post here....

...speaking of remakes , TCM showed THE RAINS CAME last night, and next Wednesday will show its remake, THE RAINS OF RANCHIPUR (1955). It stars Lana Turner as Lady Esketh, on loan to 20th Century Fox as her last Assignment under her MGM contract (although DIANE, her last movie at her studio, would be filmed before but released after TROR). Also featuring a young Richard Burton, as the object of Lana`s affections, a too laid back Fred MacMurray as the wastrel Tom Ransom , making you wish for George Brent (imagine Errol Flynn in the role instead of Fred; he would`ve been superb IMO), Michael Rennie as the cuckolded husband of Lady Esketh, and a youthful looking Joan Caulfield in the ingenue role, played by ingenue Brenda Joyce in the original.. Interestingly, in the original, Lana Turner had been considered for this role before Fox went with new contractee Brenda Joyce.

Arturo, thanks for the note that The Rains of Ranchipur is coming on next week. It's a film I've never seen. Considering how much George Brent gets derided on these threads, it's nice that a few of us acknowledge how very good he was in The Rains Came.

I just wish that his character hadn't gotten pushed to the side so much in the film's final couple of reels, as the story emphasis is then placed upon the film's two top billed stars. Still, I think the final vengeance was Brent's because, in spite of that, he's still, in my opinion, the most charming and nuanced performer in the film.

This is truly a wonderful film.

Brent puts in a career performance. Brenda Joyce does a great turn. Myrna is spot on.

But the real strength is in the script and the production. Every actor is given such a solid

bit of narrative to deal with that they'd have to try hard to screw it up. I love the way that

the script moves "Fern" from weak, trust-fund beauty into a real woman -- but doesn't knock

us over the head with it. Ditto for Brent and Myrna. Their growth is organic. I know it's part

of a "Hollywood" plot, but it feels real.

And the production is just stunning. The scene in which Nigel Bruce's manservant braces him

and unloads all the hate he's harbored for years -- and in which they both die, is so powerful.

And the "water glass" scene could be a film school study in direction and camera movement.

That dolly shot in which the parallax reveals the "other" glass is just perfect. I don't know exactly

how many shots are in that sequence, but it seems like only perhaps 5 or 6. But they are all

perfect....and devastating.

And I haven't even mentioned the amazing flood scenes, which are so good that you don't even

question "how they were done."

Finally, how can you go wrong when Maria Ouspenskaya lights up -- and lights up the screen. Perhaps the least Indian-looking woman of all time, but hey, it was "the time."

Overeasy, thanks for a great review. I'm with you all the way on this one, including George Brent giving a strong performance. A very satisfying film.

THE RAINS CAME will be repeated a couple of times in the coming months (July, I think), and Arturo, thanks for the heads up about THE RAINS OF RANCHIPUR, which I've never seen.

No one else has mentioned the gasp out loud moment when Tyrone Power unwinds his turban. He's quite a knockout in this one. No wonder Myrna was smitten!

Kingrat, I'm going to alert George Brent's daughter Suzanne to all the great mentions of her father in this thread. She loves this movie and thinks it's one of his best. I do too. More than thirty years ago, we met in a class where we were checking out the subject a mutual friend was teaching. It turned out to be parapsychology, which interested her but not me as much; however we remained good friends.

Tyrone Power was breathtaking to most of us girls in those days. He was quite a nice man, too, I understand. One guy who wasn't overwhelmed by his own good looks. A gentleman.

One of the best death scenes in all film. After all the schmaltzy sentimentalism, that is. Myrna is magnificent. One of only two instances in classic film I can recall where someone died with their eyes open. Answer this, at what point does she die?

Hopefully she won't stumble on the George Brent thread in Hot Topics!

It's the reason I've never told her how to find this forum. It would just puzzle her. Not that she'd be really angry, but she wouldn't understand that it was meant as a joke.

You're going to be getting a "cease and desist letter" any day now,

PS- And it's all my fault, isn't it? I'm so flattered.

PSS- It's not the first such letter I've been the root cause of.

PSSS- And I don't think it shall be the last.
