vast majority of the September 2013 schedule - or at least it will be

Recommended Posts

Since TCM is so late in posting anything for September I thought I'd put what I have out there for everyone to see.

Kim Novak is star of the month - Thursday is her night.

First part of a film history series is on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Friday night spotlight is about films about the future.

Most of Sunday - day and night - is being dedicated to Alfred Hitchcock all month long.

Yes, we're stuck with North by Northwest again, but we also get to see Champagne!

More schedule details coming as I get them.

Thanks everybody for helping me fill in the blanks. In some cases I already had it but had not posted it yet, but it is appreciated anyways.

This schedule has the greatest standard deviation from the midpoint of the studio era I've seen.

We have Edison shorts as part of the film history series that continues into October, and we have Minority Report as part of the Friday Night Spotlight.

It should be an interesting month.

Don't forget that September is a sweeps period, as well as the month the networks begin airing their new and returning series. I'm sure TCM wants to put its best foot forward, particularly since the 20th anniversary celebration is only months away.

I'm excited about the inclusion of the Ingmar Bergman movies "Summer with Monika" (1953) and "Winter Light" (1961). It gives me hope that maybe a definitive Bergman retrospective on TCM is in the works.

A slight correction if you don't mind - September isn't a sweeps period. The primary sweeps periods are roughly February, May, July and November. This is when Nielsen measures all 200+ TV markets.

I say "roughly" as there are occasions when the November sweep period of four weeks could contain a few days of October - and so on for the other months.

Thanks for the correction! I suppose September reminds me of a sweeps month because of the networks' premiere weeks, the return of primetime NFL football and special events such as the Emmy Awards.

I thank you, calvinnme, for bringing us this peek into the future. I have at times stumbled across a notice of a future airing but I find little or nothing when I search for them. Your talent and willingness to work hard for us is exemplary! :)

I must say that this schedule delights and befuddles me. There are many glorious movies but many seem to me to be odd selections for TCM. Wednesdays and Saturdays are the only normal TCM days. I hope you please note this is comment and not condemnation.

The great surprise for me is: *A Boy and His Dog* (1975). I love this movie but I believe that a normal viewer will not see past the vulgarities. It is based on a story by Harlan Ellison and so it is a thing to be enjoyed only by those who can appreciate concepts which challenge normal reality and comfort. I believe it is a very eclectic movie and that there will be uproar in the forum re: its airing.

I am wondering if you or any other person will agree with my assessment:

1) It is a great movie.

2) It seems an odd selection for TCM.

3) The movie will be decried as porn/trash by some posters on this forum.

There is a sex scene and several scenes of bare breasts. That is all that it takes for some to say that it is porn.

There is is! Finally, the premiere of the fully restored *THE BIG PARADE* in Prime-time on the 25th! This was a long time coming. 9 years since the film was restored in 35 millimeter, and you have to go back to 1997 to when the the camera Negatives were discovered at George Eastman House. About a week in advance of the Blu-ray and DVD release. Thank you to TCM Programmer Chuck Tabesh!

The Friday night series in September is about films and the future and both are being shown as part of that series.

Thank you for your monthly sleuthing, Calvin. :)

My highlights:

Pitfall - Just saw this for the first time a few weeks ago (inspired by MissWonderly's Friday Noir thread). Neat little pic with good turns by Dick Powell, Lizabeth Scott and Raymond Burr (in full-on creepy stalker mode).

Love Me Tonight - maybe it's *technically* possible for me to eventually tire of this film, but I wouldn't bet on it :x

Street Scene - Sylvia Sidney! Interesting King Vidor direction and 30s flavor, too.

Sabotage - Sylvia Sidney!! (Yeah, I'm a little fixated :8} )

And Hitchcock-apalooza! :)

Fishmier ,

I expected to see the same old stuff. They've been showing the same movies every October for the last 7 or 8 years. It's time to get some new material TCM ! and I don't mean newer movies. How about showing the REAL 1925 Phantom of the opera for once gosh darn it!
