Bogart Vs. Cagney Vs. Robinson

Who's this Sir Larry guy and what does he know? ;) Eddie had a lot more success then Cagney in trying to vary his roles in the early 30's Warners films . Robinson did those comedies that spoofed the gangster characters and several other non gangster films, that prevented him from being too typed. I'm sure that Jimmy C wanted to do the same but got a steady diet of the cocky, tough guy stuff. Cagney was always fighting with Mr Warner about that, but in the end the boss got what he wanted. Robinson seemed to be a little more accommodating and got more leeway which paid off later on. Of course Bogart got typed early on too, just keep being Duke Mantee. Eventually he broke that mold too.

mrroberts, Cagney had stage experience too. He was in many plays before he appeared in movies. Also as far as the non-gangster roles there were many that Cagney shined in Yankee..,Man of a Thousand Faces, These Wilder Years and some others. I agree with you about the kind of part that Robinson played. But I also think Cagney was Great at the following more so than the other 2; Comedy, Song and Dance and portraying famous people like George M. Cohan and Lon Chaney. I guess all three actors shined in different ways outside the gangster roles and that's what made them great. Edward G. a great actor love his expressions and manerisms. Bogie his cool laid back way yet still projecting unforgettable characters.

Well, Robinson had a couple of early ethnic roles at Warners, playing a Chinese in Hatchet Man and either an Italian or Greek in Tiger Shark. For the most part they are not characterizations that are particularly well remembered today, and it would have been a cruel mistake if Cagney had attempted either one of those roles. (I cringe at the thought of Cagney in Oriental makeup).

 

Robinson did have more of a "foreign" look than all American Cagney. For that matter, Warners even cast Bogart as a Mexican in Virginia City, with fairly disasterous results. Cagney was spared that indignity, as well.

 

It wasn't until Robinson was loaned to Columbia in 1935 for The Whole Town's Talking that he had his first impressive opportunity to play "meek" in one of two roles in the film. It wouldn't be until he started to do character work almost a decade later with Fritz Lang that Eddie G. would take on roles of a milquetoast nature again, parts that would have been a mistake for either Bogart or Cagney.

 

(Cagney, though, during his independent period in the '40s did play a gentle role (for him) in Johnny Come Lately. He's quite charming in the film but memory tells me that his character resorted to fisticuffs towards the film's end again. As pointed out by James, it's not that Cagney couldn't effectively play a milder part so much as he didn't get those roles because the audience wasn't interested in seeing him do it).

 

Bogart's alcoholism didn't seriously impact his film work. He took great pride in the fact that he could drink all night and be a professional on the sound stage the following morning.

 

The same, however, was not true of Bogart's stage work before his film career. This was a time in his career when he had yet to have a great success. He'd drink in New York speakeasies till he passed out, then wake up cracking wise which lead to a lot of fights. During this theater period he frequently got fired because he was so hung over. Bogart would shrug it off, confident he'd find more stage work.

 

Ironically when Bogart showed up hung over in an audition for the role of Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest, not caring if he got the role or not, he was hired because it was felt that his unshaven, dishevelled appearance was perfect for the gangster part. This, of course, would turn out to be the big break of Bogart's stage career, in turn, leading to a Warner Brothers contract when he was hired for the film version.

Jim, I was thinking along the lines of the background that each man had before getting into the movies. Cagney had a lot of time in vaudeville as opposed to stage acting. In his first movie roles he got typed as the smart aleck tough guy and *Public Enemy* really cemented that image. With few exceptions he was stuck with that thru the 30's at Warner Bros. Only after leaving WB did he get to do a greater variety of work. Your right, he really excelled at bio pictures playing Cohan ,Lon Chaney, Admiral Halsey, etc.

I recently watched a DVD of one of my favourite films, Treasure of the Sierra Madre. It's a picture that I re-visit every three or four years and from which, no matter how well I know the production, I always seem to derive a certain degree of satisfaction. Not many films that I've seen hold up so well to repeat viewings as does this John Huston classic.

 

Watching the film's earliest scenes which features Bogart on the bum in Tampico, panhandling from strangers (in particular, of course, the film's director as an inside joke), it's always been obvious to me that it was a double of the actor in many of those on-location Tampico shots. There would then be an insert shot of Bogart's face. No big deal, just an observation, but I've always found it a little distracting.

 

By the way, about that haircut that Bogie gets in the film. You know, the bowl cut with the greasy looking slicked down hair. I don't ever want to have a barber like that. Just saying.

One of the film's greatest strengths, of course, is the Mexican on location shooting that brings a tremendous sense of realism to the adventure. Sure, there are an abundance of studio shots mixed in, as well (such as the campfire scene at night in which a laughing, now totally paranoid Dobbs challenges Curtain (Tim Holt) to see which one can stay awake longer).

 

But all those shots of the prospectors on the mountain trail, and those shots with mountains in the backdrop, are the real thing, from what I can tell. You can almost feel the heat beating down upon the actors. Typical Huston, the adventurer in him loved the location shooting, while Bogart, who liked his creature comforts, did not. Yes, the cast would retire to a swanky hotel in the evening after every day's shoot but that is still out-in-the-wilds stuff captured on film.

It's interesting hearing on the DVD making of special about the film of the conflict that occurred between Bogart and Huston during the film. The production was going longer than expected with the Mexican shoot and Bogart was concerned that he would miss out on an annual yacht race (from California to Hawaii, I believe).

 

As a result Bogie would frequently question Huston as to whether the shoot would be wrapping up in time so that he could make the race. Huston must have been somewhat ambiguous in his replies, we'll make it if we can make it sort of thing.

 

One evening, while they were all having dinner together, Bogie started to question once again when the Mexican shoot would wrap up, only he was doing it louder this time. Huston's response was to reach over and take Bogart's nose between his fingers and twist it, until it hurt.

 

Lauren Bacall, on location with her husband, spoke up and said, words to the effect, "John, you're hurting Bogie."

 

Huston released Bogart's nose and no further words were spoken. Bogart never mentioned the yacht race again (which he would, indeed, miss) and Huston and he went on to finish their Mexican scenes without disruption. There was, however, a bit of an estrangement between the two men after the nose twisting incident.

 

Interestingly, though, it was Bogart that went to Huston afterward to patch things up, not the other way around even though it was the director who had momentarily hurt the actor (and done it in public, too). It goes to show that even though Bogart was clearly a type "A" personality, it was obviously Huston who was the more dominant in their relationship. (Perhaps that's why he was such a great director).

 

The Bogart-Huston relationship reminds me, in turn, of that of another famous actor-director combo, John Wayne and John Ford, in which, once again, it was the director who was the dominant personality in their friendship, both on and off the set.

 

The making of special on the DVD also made reference to the fact that the casting in the film had originally envisioned Walter Huston in the role of Dobbs before that was changed to old man Howard after Bogart came on board. There was also casting talk of Edward G. Robinson, though it was not stated for which role.

 

Quite frankly, whether it had been Dobbs or Howard, I think Robinson would have been dramatically up for the challenge. I've always regarded Howard's character as brighter than Dobbs. And Robinson strikes me as being more cerebral than Bogart (the former was an art connoisseur in private life while the latter spent his past time largely drinking in bars).

 

I think Edward G. Robinson could have triumphed in either part, but I love the thought of him playing Howard. Having said that, however, I'm glad the casting went as it did. Bogart is brilliant (his best work, as far as I'm concerned), while Walter Huston is almost unrecognizable (especially without his teeth) from anything he had done before. And Huston does, of course, give a performance for the ages.

 

It would have been fun to see Bogie and Robinson on a mountain trail together, but, what the heck, Key Largo was just around the corner for the two of them anyway, and that film would have Robinson's last classic role, I feel.

Actually, James, my grammarian friend, I'm not quite certain. After all, Tampico, for example, is a Mexican city, not a Mexico city. Therefore, I assumed, that a proper reference to a film shoot in that country would be that it is Mexican. As in "a Mexican shoot."

 

If only Alfonso Bedoya was here to set me straight. Nah, on the other hand, better that he's not. He'd probably only make reference to those stinkin' badges again.

I believe Edward G could have played ALL 3 roles, ala Peter Sellers, Jerry Lewis, or Alec Guinness ;) Bogie and Huston (John) must have worked things out ok, just a few years later they would take a little trip to Africa to do another picture.

Oh, yes. Huston was willing to patch things up with Bogie. As a matter of fact, even sooner than the African (Africa?) shoot. The two of them were working on Key Largo together right after Treasure was completed.

Yes, the location shooting for Treasure must have been downright beautiful (all the cast did reside in a luxury hotel) compared to The African Queen, largely filmed in the Congo and Uganda. Bogart, however, was one of the few people on that shoot that didn't get sick, claiming that he avoided the local water and fortified himself with whiskey. (Charlie Allnut would have been proud of him).

 

Katharine Hepburn, who had initially looked scornfully upon both Bogart and John Huston for their alcohol consumption, later commented that the joke was on her since she got deathly ill during the location shooting of the film but the two boozers fought off the bugs with their alcohol intake.

 

Much the same happened seven years later, when Huston also filmed The Roots of Heaven in Africa, with both he and Errol Flynn's drinking shielding them from the illnesses that befell other cast members.

If Houston grabbed Cagney by the nose, Cagney would have socked him. Cagney said Bogie wasn't tough. The Dead End Kids pulled down Bogie's pants and teased him. When they tried to be wiseguy's with Cagney, he put them in their place.

Your point being, I assume, that in real life Cagney was more of a tough guy than Bogart. If that is the case, isn't it all the more reason to appreciate Bogart's skill as an actor in successfully portraying a tough guy?

Cagney and Bogart worked together on several films, Cagney always being the star with Bogart the supporting player. I think they worked well together but there was some tension between them. Two guys the same age, both from New York City, but one came from wealth, the other relative poverty. Think of the Bogart movie *Dead End* with the rich kid and the poor street kids. I think Cagney had an unavoidable resentment toward the snobby upper class guys, he probably had many encounters with them in his young life. Bogart on the other hand was always uneasy about being of wealth and privilege, he was supposed to follow in his father's footsteps as a doctor but he quit school and joined the Merchant Marine. Then got into the world of stage acting, not exactly a place for high society types (unless you're very successful). So two guys, coming from different worlds, each trying to get to a different place. I don't think either could identify well with the other, so they certainly never became pals. Interestingly, Edward G Robinson got along very well with both Cagney and Bogart. I wonder if in the later years all three couldn't have done some kind of movie together, that would have been terrific.

A couple of added observations on my favourite Bogart film, Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

 

*Walter Huston as Howard:*

 

The first time I saw this film, as a kid, the only actor in the production that I knew by name was its star, Bogart. To me, the old guy playing veteran gold prospector Howard was very good in his role, but he was just that, an old guy.

 

Since then, of course, largely thanks to TCM, I have come to appreciate Walter Huston for the great character actor (Canadian, too, a Toronto boy) that he was, ranging from his earliest screen roles, such as playing villain Trampas in the '29 Virginian through films like Beast of the City and Dodsworth to, finally, his last film role, in The Furies.

 

But in all of those films he is still recognizably Walter Huston, whether he had a walrus moustache or slicked back hair or even that scruffy beard he wore as Mr. Scratch in Devil and Daniel Webster.

 

But that is simply not true of Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Oh, yes, I recognize the voice, of course. But his appearance - with those aged lined features and white hair and beard and, above all, his agreement with his director/son to remove his dentures, which dramatically altered the contours of his face, it's hard to believe, at times, that this is the same Huston I've seen in so many other films.

Note: Huston's lower plate is clearly in evidence in this shot in spite of the acknowledgement by all that he removed those store bought teeth.

 

Huston is so good in this film, drawing upon his years of acting experience to bring an even greater depth of knowledge and wisdom to the already wonderful dialogue provided for him. And, perhaps that's the difference between watching him and Bogart in this film.

 

Bogie is brilliant as Dobbs, of course, truly a great performance. But he is still recognizably Humphrey Bogart, a larger-than-life film star. Huston, by contrast, is swallowed up by his characterization as Howard. In many ways, as I watched his performance the other day, I could even briefly fool myself into believing that, rather than watching a highly skilled character actor playing a role, I really was watching a wily old gold prospector on screen.

 

*That Joyous Gold Dance:*

 

One of the most memorable scenes in the film is when Howard bellows in laughter and does a crazy little dance for joy when he first discovers gold. According to the DVD special on the film, Huston stated that the little jig he did was taught to him by playwrite Eugene O'Neill while working on a play of his, Desire Under the Elms.

As for that great gutteral, almost maniacal laugh that Huston performed in the same scene, the actor said that it was a reproduction of a laugh of his own that he had uttered years before in reaction to some brutal critical reviews of a stage performance of his as Othello.

 

*Five Thousand Dollars Is A Lot Of Money:*

 

That's a line of dialogue that Bogart says as Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon. The same line is spoken by someone off screen in the Tampico flophouse scene when Walter Huston is introduced, talking about gold. Probably, I suspect, a deliberate inside joke by screenwriter John Huston.

 

*Inside Appearances:*

 

John Huston liked his little jokes and there are two unbilled appearances in Treasure. The most famous, of course, is by John himself as a white coated American tourist repeatedly pestered by Dobbs for a handout in the early Tampico scenes of the film.

Less well known is an appearance by the actor father of one of the film's three stars. Tim Holt's Dad, Jack, appears in the early flophouse scene, where Dobbs and Curtain first hear Howard talking about the gold and what it does to men's souls. And he has two lines of dialogue, asking Howard if he had ever struck it rich.

 

There's also an appearance by a young Bobby Blake as a Mexican boy who does his own pestering, of Dobbs, to get him to buy a lottery ticket. Blake got a glass of water thrown in his face by Dobbs for his effort, plus a small touch of film immortality. Well, maybe this one qualifies as an "inside" performance today only because of Blake's later fame (and infamy).

The person who does NOT appear in Treasure, despite rumours to the contrary, is Ann Sheridan. Yes, there is a photograph of Sheridan seemingly in costume to have a gag appearance as a prostitute who passes Dobbs on the street after he comes out of a barber shop.

It's obvious that, assuming as Sheridan says, she did film a gag appearance as the hooker, that her scene did not make it into the final cut of the film. It's interesting that Sheridan herself didn't seem to know it. I doubt that the actress even considered the matter to be all that important anyway. Who knows if she even actually saw the film.

 

Bruce Bennett as Cody:

 

Generally speaking, viewers and critics don't make many references to Bennett's supporting performance as the American who briefly intrudes upon the three gold prospectors, hoping to make a fortune of his own, before he is killed by the banditos.

 

Bennett, a former Olympian and screen Tarzan, was a limited actor but he prospered for a short while with a Warners contract in the late '40s. He brings a likability and sense of decency to his characterization of Cody. That, I suspect, may have been a built-in part of the actor because he brought that same quality to so many other roles he played at that time, as well.

 

Bennett initially had difficulty grasping the character of Cody. John Huston gave him a little advice, a lynchpin upon which to hang his characterization. "You're smarter than these guys," the director told him, and from that Bennett was able to get a fix on his performance.

 

By the way, no offense to Cody but no one in this film is smarter than Howard, in my opinion.

Who can ever forget Alfonso Bedoya's marvelously evil interpretation of the gold hat bandit in this film. Yet the character only appeared once in B. Traven's novel of Treasure, in the attack on the train.

 

When the author asked Huston why the character would be re-appearing in the film's screenplay, the director/screenwriter replied this "would serve to bring out the fate that pursued Dobbs . . . The primary purpose was to give the moving picture a certain dramatic unity which novels don't necessarily require to be great novels. Pictures and plays, however, seem to fall apart when new characters and incidents are introduced in final scenes."

I suspect Mr. Fred C Dobbs of this message board may have slipped TomJH a gold piece to give this film such a big build up. Doesn't matter, it still is a great film and deserves the praise. This is, in my opinion, the best film Bogart was ever in, but my favorite Bogart film role is still Roy Earle in *High Sierra* . Of course in that film, Bogart is the central character, he doesn't share the spotlight like he does in "Treasure".

Certainly Roy Earle in High Sierra was a crucial role and performance in Bogart's career. Without the success of that film, in combination with The Maltese Falcon, both lucky casting breaks for the actor, he probably would not have had the career that followed.

 

Considering the fact that Treasure was considered to be one of 1948's prestige releases, reflected by the fact that it received numerous Oscar nominations, winning a number of them, it's surprising that Bogart was overlooked as a Best Actor nominee. It seems, at least to me, like a no brainer to nominate the star of that big a film, especially when that star is doing a character turn unlike anything he had ever attempted before.

 

As for your suggestion, mrroberts, to have featured Bogart, Cagney and Robinson together in one film, logistically that would probably have been murder. To find a screenplay with three strong roles for three dominant personality stars like that might have been a small miracle.

 

There would also have been the small issue of billing, another nightmare. Robinson's star lustre was clearly dimming by the later '40s. It would be difficult to envision either Cagney or Bogart willing to accept second billing to the other, however.

 

Once he became a star Cagney always got top billing, right until 1955. (I don't know how tough it was for him to get second billed to Doris Day in Love Me Or Leave Me or Henry Fonda in Mr. Roberts. Truth is, though, I've never heard of Cagney having a big ego).

 

As for Bogart, once he became a star in 1941 he never got anything less than top billing right to his final film. Amazing how professional ego and status will trump everything else, including friendships. Neither Bogart nor Spencer Tracy, the best of friends, would budge on the issue of who got top billing in The Desperate Hours. The result was that Tracy backed out of the project, even though he loved Bogie, and was replaced by Frederic March, with whom, to the best of my knowledge, Bogart didn't have much acquaintance.
