WB BOX SETS

With WB releasing so many box sets (at least one a month) I was wondering how many people out there are actually buying all of them. As I stated earlier on another thread, it is too costly for me to buy them all, even with discounts. Although I hadn't intended, I am going to pass on the GARBO boxset. I already have GRAND HOTEL on DVD and QUEEN CHRISTINA on LD. I will only select my favorite to buy singly: CAMILLE. Sadly, I passed on the ERROL FLYNN boxset and CONTROVERSIAL CLASSIC, although I want to buy FURY from the latter. Upcoming must's for me are ASTAIRE & ROGERS and FILM NOIR II. I did spring for the DORIS DAY BOX, but got this for $62, a very good price. Also, coming this fall are special editions of BEN HUR, WIZARD OF OZ and KING KONG, so one has to draw the line somewhere.

I buy what i can. I have the WBs gangster set, Errol Flynn set, the recent legendary heroes set of JOhn Wayne, and I plan on buying the classic comedies set and the controversial movie set along with other upcomers.

Others that I have include the Cary Grant sig coll, an Alec Guiness five movie box set, the bob hope tribute collection with four of the road movies, Best of Abbott and Costello VOL 1 2 and 3, Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones trilogy,a four movie set with Bogart, The Samurai Trilogy from Criterion, and the four movie set of Kurosawa films from Criterion. I think those are all of my sets.

And I hope to keep adding.

I never thought they could release too much but I also just cannot buy everything - and watch everything, no matter how well-produced the box set. The Garbo sets, the Film Noir 2 box set and the Astaire-Rodgers will be mandatory buys for me, but as with the John Wayne box (I only purchased Tall In The Saddle), the Bette Davis and Joan Crawford box sets I may only buy 1 or 2 titles, the rest I have on either DVD, Laser Disc or VHS.

And don't even get me started on my lack of shelf space....

I also have to pick and choose, because you really have to be rolling in dough to buy every set that comes out.

I had passed on buying the Film Noir set and the Marx Brothers set from Warners, and then one day on DeepDiscountDVD they had them for like 50% off, cheaper then they normally are on the site - I just couldn't pass them up. I think I paid $30 for the Noir set, which is a real bargain.

I had to buy the Comedies Collection, since it has "Bringing Up Baby," and "Dinner at Eight" in it, two of my all-time favorites. And I have a few others, like the Gangster set, the Cary Grant set, the W.C. Fields set, and the Paramount Marx Bros. set.

And like you guys I'm definitely gonna pass on the Controversial Classics, Errol Flynn, and Bette and Joan sets. It's just too much. And in my opinion I think they're really jiping us with Bette and Joan, since at least two movies in each set are already out. And meanwhile dozens more of their films could be released.

THe last couple box sets I've bought were from COSTCO. If you buy just a single movie the price usually isn't much different but the box sets on average are around twenty bucks cheaper than anywhere else.

Hi "Edgdrv". Somehow, I don't believe that many of us "out here" are financially able to spring for every Boxed Set that appears on the market, regardless of the attractiveness of their contents ;). But, I still think that it's awfully nice of you to alert us about the new sets that come out so that we both know about them, and can "pick and choose" if we actually can afford one of them in a Blue Moon! Thanks!

classicfan1119, the one box set I am looking forward to is a pre-code Hollywood set of films. No titles announced yet or date, but there are supposed to be surprises. Hopefully, they include the recently discovered pre-censored BABY FACE with Barbara Stanwyck, not the version that airs on TCM now. I will continue to post any news of new box sets that I hear about. Thanx for your feedback.

edgdrv, I agree! If the boxed set of the pre-code Hollywood films has the pre-censored BABY FACE in it, I'm absolutely going to have to sell a grandkid so I can buy it! Please be sure, if you can as time rolls on, to keep us updated about this, and exactly which BABY FACE to expect to find in the set when it's released. Thanks! ML

updates because I do try to buy about every boxed set that comes out, that is of interest to me.

I've found that often these things will go OOP not that long after, and one can kick oneself then for passing them up. Who needs food, if one has DVD's anyway? Usually one gets a wee bit better buy in boxed set form, so that makes it acceptable.

Some of the ones I've bought recently that have been out a while, are the complete Monty Python tv episodes and all the Twilight Zones, the Alec Guinness set, a Dirk Bogarde collection, Betty Page films, the Eisenstein set, Film Noir Classics, and that Kubrick collection, along with all Chaplin's films and shorts, and the W.C. Fields collection, and all those wonderful Universal classics like The Mummy and Dracula, plus the Sherlock Holmes boxed sets.

I also splurged and bought the Monterey Pop Festival and the Cocteau box.

I admit it, I've become a boxed set fanatic!

I sure wish they'd finally release more seasons of the Twin Peaks tv series, as it was most memorable viewing. So yes, I do buy a lot but there is always more coming out and one must pace oneself a bit, to not become overwhelmed with finding space for all these dvd's.

Thanks for the heads up, and keep up the good work!
