markbeckuaf
I'm not quite sure why this flick gets short shrift, cos I really dug it hard! John Gilbert is wonderful in it, I thought, and Lois Moran stole the show as the golddigger who falls in love with the drunken mug! I love her SO much, she's so cute and spunky and sexy as heck!! I also dig on her golddigger gf, played by Gwen Lee! Admittedly, El Brendel, John's sidekick, is an acquired taste, but he has some comic moments, particularly in the courtroom and also with Willie Fung!!! This was a soft-hearted romantic flick from the pre-code era and one that moved me to tears at the end! I totally dug it, anyone else?

TomJH
Mark, if you like John Gilbert, two of his key talkie performances, were in Downstairs, which Gilbert scripted and in which he plays a smooth talking villain, and The Captain Hates the Sea, which TCM just broadcast the same day as West of Broadway. Captain Hates the Sea has an odd ball collection of actors (including Victor Mclaglen, Walter Connolly, Leon Errol, Walter Catlett and even the Three Stooges),in what could be described as a sort of semi-comic Grand Hotel set on an ocean liner. But it's Gilbert, fourth billed, playing, ironically, a souse, that is the most interesting actor in the film. Gilbert never overdoes it. He plays his role throughout the film with a bemused affability and as if he's just slightly drunk. Since the film is light hearted in tone Gilbert does not ask for sympathy in the part. Yet you can't help but feel sorry for him. The "great" John Gilbert fourth billed, behind the likes of Wynne Gibson, among others. And, of course, he couldn't find any more employment after this film's release, and would be dead within two years of a heart attack. But Gilbert showed in this film, as well, as Downstairs, that he had the stuff to be a fine character actor. The fates, however, combined with Gilbert's own excessive drinking self destructiveness, seemed to have other plans for him. Sepiatone
Maybe it gets the "short shrift" because it's SHORT! (68 mins.) But in spite of it's "star and a half" rating, I thought it was pretty good. Had it been longer, something might have developed between her and Ralph Bellamy, but it got cut short. But as short as it was, the writers( or the director) still managed to develope the characters adequately, and you knew them well enough even just half way through. In other words, it was a "groove"! markbeckuaf
Tom, I totally agree, and totally dig on both DOWNSTAIRS and THE CAPTAIN WHO HATES THE SEA!!! The latter flick I only caught the first time a few weeks ago on TCM, and dug it enough to DVR it from this week's Gilbert fest to dig on again! I think the director mentioned to the studio that he was having trouble getting done on time cos everyone was pretty much soused most of the time! ****! And yeah, DOWNSTAIRS rocks! Gilbert was soooo smooth, I totally agree with you! Sad how things turned out.

Check out this 1929 rarity: (especially Lois's song at the 12:35 point): And you ain't seen nothin' till you've seen this film in 35mm! I have had the pleasure of viewing the only existing 35mm print several times as well as the sole known 16mm print (from which this copy was made) projected on the big screen also. You'd get to see a lot more of Lois (unfortunately in this transfer some of her head & feet got cut off.)
FredCDobbs
Here is Lois Moran in BEHIND THAT CURTAIN (1929): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLVYna5uBBQ She is very good in this film, along with Warner Baxter. None of the prints are very good, but it is a good film.
JHNDLTN
I fell completely for Lois Moran after seeing her in WEST OF BROADWAY several years ago on TCM. She is so cute and yes, spunky and has a lovely face and figure to boot. Is it any wonder that F. Scott Fitzgerald had a fling with her when he was in Hollywood and gave her a character in his novel TENDER IS THE NIGHT? This film also features my next favorite lady, Madge Evans who also looks super sexy in her role. The part where Gilbert has the DTs looks so authentic , I am actually sad when I see it. It looks too real not to be authentic!

FredCDobbs
Lois, aging from age 10 to about age 18 or 19, in one movie: In this 1925 version of STELLA DALLAS, Lois Moran plays Laurel Dallas, starting at age 10: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=eDRELb9Z2RA#t=2109s And then a teenager: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=eDRELb9Z2RA#t=2650s And then an older teenager: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=eDRELb9Z2RA#t=3200s And then older: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=eDRELb9Z2RA#t=3494s And later in the same film she plays a grown-up Laurel who gets married: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=eDRELb9Z2RA#t=6083s How do you suppose they made Lois look so small and short when she was 10 years old? TopBilled
>I'm not quite sure why this flick gets short shrift With the exception of QUEEN CHRISTINA, I think all of John Gilbert's talkies get short shrift. And it is rather unfair. Some of them are quite entertaining.

FredCDobbs
See my film clips below of Lois playing a 10 year old then later in the same film an 18-19 year old. How do you suppose they made her look so short at the beginning?
twinkeee
She isn't short at all for a ' ten year old '. She's almost as tall as the woman she is hugging in the video and the woman is wearing heels. Obviously, she is not very tall to begin with. Twink Edited by: twinkeee on Jul 12, 2013 3:00 PM

FredCDobbs
I think the mother is standing on a platform in this scene:
twinkeee
Yes because in the youtube video, her face comes up to half way up to her mother's face and you can clearly see that the mother is wearing heels. In the pic you posted, the mother is Much taller.
FredCDobbs
I agree with you. Lois seems taller in the wide shot, but when they cut to this close-up about a minute later, with their legs hidden, the mother looks much taller. This was very clever stuff to film back in those days. Lois was actually 16 years old at the time they made this film, but she looks 10 years old at the beginning and about 19 years old at the end. Also, the director has her jump up and down like a kid at the beginning, then at the end she is more quiet, like a young lady.
FredCDobbs
>OH, you're so sweet to agree Well, you are right. When I first looked at the film, I thought Lois was 10 years old at her 10th Birthday party scene. Then when I got to the end, I wondered who that older actress was who played a grown-up Lois. Then I searched for her name under the film listing at IMDB, but I couldn't find any other lady playing an older Laurel. And finally a big gong went off in my head that said: HA HA! THE SOLUTION!! THEY TOOK 9 YEARS TO FILM IT, AND THEY ARE BOTH LOIS MORAN!!
