UCLA in Los Angeles has scheduled a rare and little seen series of films: "Sin Uncensored: Hollywood Before the Code beginning this weekend. Among the films being screened is a recently discovered print of BABY FACE (1933) which stars Barbara Stanywck. This is not the version that sometimes runs on TCM but a recently discoved pre-censored version discovered by the Library of Congress which according to an recent article in the L.A. Times is much hotter than the released version. Most of the other film scheduled are so rare they aren't even mentioned in Mark Vieria's excellent book SIN IN SOFT FOCUS: PRE-CODE HOLLYWOOD. Some are listed in Leonard Maltin's Movie book but never play TV. The films include: BONDAGE (1933) with Dorothy Jordan, EAST IS WEST (1930) with Lupe Velez, MANDALAY (1934) with Kay Francis, MILLS OF THE GODS (1934) with Fay Wray, TWO KINDS OF WOMEN with Miriam Hopkins and WATERLOO BRIDGE (1931) with Mae Clark. The latter is due to be released along with its (1940) remake on DVD in the near future. MILLS is owned by Sony, but many of the others are owned by WB so hopefully many of these will finally make it to DVD. WB has scheduled a pre-code box set sometime soon but won't reveal the titles as yet.

I had read elsewhere and had it confirmed that Baby Face will indeed be out on DVD in 2006, supposedly fall. I can't wait!

I'm dying to know what WB is going to include on that Pre-Code box set. Want to play the speculation game?

God love ya edgdrv, you are my go-to poster on dvd releases - god bless your classic lovin' heart!

You are welcome, silentfan66. As I said, I am hoping BABY FACE will be the pre-censored version recently discovered by the Library of Congress not the version that now plays TCM. I can't even guess what titles WB will select other than BABY FACE, but hopefully the films selected for this box set are rare and have been unseen for years.

Unfortunately, UCLA does not do much advertising and I read about this series in an article that ran in the Los Angeles Times on 5/20. I suppose one would have to be on the mailing list for the schedule. I know BABY FACE and TWO SECONDS with Edward G. Robinson played on Friday 5/20. Today 7 p.m. PAINTED WOMAN (1932) and MANDALAY (1934), Wednesday 5/25 7:30: WATERLOO BRIDGE (1932) and HELLO SISTER (1933), Friday 5/27: 7:30 MILLS OF THE GODS (1934) and TWO KINDS OF WOMEN (1932). This is all I have of the schedule. You can reach UCLA at (310) 206-8013. Don't have their website.

Never mind i found it check this site out: http://www.cinema.ucla.edu/public/calendar/calendar_f.html

the cost is $8.00 a ticket, not a bad price to see a classic film. Thanks for the heads up on this, though it may contain subject material that I may not wish to see, there are other films being played there too. But who knows, just how bad can the subject matter be? after all it was filmed back in the 30's, when cuss words were still words like "Sufferin suckatash" and "Blagnabit", this might be kinda fun after all.

roostersass--Have you seen many precode movies or are you familiar with them at all? The reason they're called pre-code is because they were made before the Hays code censored movies. Therefore, while you may not hear what you consider profanity, you will see things that you'll be surprised to see in early 30's movies--like premarital sex, drug use, prostitution, gang warfare--all kinds of stuff like that. So I would recommend reading up on some of these movies on IMDB.com before you spend your $8.00.

Hey edge, did you get to see the original version of BABY FACE? I saw it at the Film Forum and it was amazing, IMO it played much better than the released censored version. I hope that whenever they release that pre-code box set, they include both versions, like they did with THE BIG SLEEP and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN.

Speaking of Pre-Code screenings, the Film Forum in N.Y. is having a month long festival of Paramount Pre-Codes during the month of June. For the folks who live in and around N.Y., it's a great opportunity to see some great classics, and all of them screened as double features. Go to www.filmforum.com for more info.

And you guys are lucky to have seen the original version of "Babyface." I didn't even know the steamy one we've seen on TCM was censored! The original must be a real scorcher.

And edg, "Mandalay" is not too rare. I think TCM has played it before, and I know PBS has. I taped it from one of them, and although good, it's not as memorable as some other Pre-Codes like "Babyface."

No I havent seen any "Pre-Code" Films, and never heard of them till now, thanks for the heads up. You probably saved me from being disapointed, traveling all that way and spending my money to watch smut doesnt appeal to me. However I did notice that they were playing other classic films, like Carosel, those might be worth going to, for me anyhow.

I can't wait for the Film Forum's Paramount Pre-Code festival! There are so many great movies that can not be found on tape or TV - I wish I could go everyday! I really can't wait to see The Story of Temple Drake, though. That is one of the most infamous pre-codes...it should be good.

I cannot wait for the Film Forum series as well. In fact a few weeks ago I purchased tickets for the New York Philharmonic's Summer Series at Lincoln Center and I checked the Film Forum calender first to insure I would not be missing any of the films I really want to see, because you are right they are NEVER shown.

One of the gems of the festival is the restored Technicolor musical FOLLOW THRU. When I saw it at their pre-code musicals festival, people literally applauded the close-up of Nancy Carroll, the color was amazing. The main film I want to see is ONE HOUR WITH YOU, on Bastille Day, I guess as a tribute to Maurice Chevalier. There are 2 Sylvia Sidney films playing I have never heard of but really want to see, PICK-UP and LADIES OF THE BIG HOUSE. And 2 early Cary Grant films on July 1. And then there is BOLERO with Carole Lombard and George Raft. I have always heard about this film, but I have never seen it play anywhere.

I saw THE STORY OF TEMPLE DRAKE during their "pre-code women" festival of a few years ago, believe me even censored it was something else.
