The Internet Archive (archive.org) is dedicated to compiling media that has gone out of copyright. Some already know about their collection of public domain films, but many will be unaware that they have many PD film books as well, all available for free download:

Some of which are very intriguing:

A Pictorial History of the Silent Screen (Blum) -- Classic picture book, contains stills from many lost films

A Pictorial History of the Movies (Deems Taylor)

The Film Til Now (Rotha, 1930) -- Famous early historical overview

The Liveliest Art (Arthur Knight)

The Technique of Film Editing (Reisz) -- The author would later direct Saturday Night & Sunday Morning

The Stars (Schickel, 1962)

There are also a number of bios, such as Keaton's My Wonderful World of Slapstick, Eisenstein's Notes of A Film Director, and real rarities like Edgar Wallace's My Hollywood Diary and Adolphe Menjou's It Took Nine Tailors.

There are also many volumes of trade publications like Film Daily, The Screen Writer, the WWI-era fan magazine Film Fun, etc ... As well as souvenir programs for silents like Ben Hur, Birth of a Nation, King of Kings, and others.

Researchers will no doubt consider it a very valuable resource, and even casual fans should find something of interest.
