Station West and That Fist Fight

I watched the beginning of Station West, a pretty nifty little 1948 western that played on TCM a few days ago. It's a fairly intriguing film that will probably appeal to film noir fans because it has a number of cast members far more associated with that genre than westerns - star Dick Powell, as well as Jane Greer, Raymond Burr and Steve Brodie.

The film also has a fist fight staged between Powell and Guinn "Big Boy" Williams. Now you remember Williams, I hope, usually recalled as playing Errol Flynn's affable muscle brained lunkhead sidekick in a few early '40s westerns, along with the likes of Alan Hale.

But it's a different Big Boy in Stage West. There is no humour to be found in this characterization. He's big, intimidating and a town enforcer. Nobody wants to mess with him, and for good reason. This guy means business and is ready to crunch anyone with his fists if they even look at him cross-eyed.

Dick Powell, being the film's hero, of course, is still ready to tangle with him. As Big Boy stands towering over Powell as Dick sits at a saloon table gabbing with Jane Greer, Powell makes it apparent that, huge as this guy is, he won't be intimidated by him. Powell even takes a sudden sock at Big Boy, to which Williams responds, "You're too little to make that big a mistake." And it's a pretty sound comment.

Anyway, it then leads to a street fight between Powell and Williams with half the town watching and some taking bets (not many putting their money on Powell). It's one of those surreal, suspension-of-disbelief scenes for the viewer, not so much over whether Powell could actually put up a good fight against Williams, but over whether he could survive the first punch (along with just about anyone else Big Boy might hit, as well, truth be told).

Well, Powell will eventually emerge triumphant in this contest, with Big Boy lying unconscious on the ground. Sorry, not for a moment can any viewer seriously think that this would really be the case.

But I must give the makers of this fight scene credit. It's a surprisingly excitingly staged affair, what with Powell, Big Boy and, in the long shots, their doubles all going at it pretty hard. It's a quite beautifully edited sequence, and the vigour of it (plus the fact that Powell does appear to take a real battering) almost made me buy it.

Immediately afterward Powell, looking more than a bit wobbly and decidedly bruised, retires to his room where he konks out in his bed and looks like he's ready to sleep for a year. A touch of post-war reality to that moment, at least. Of course, the next morning the bruises have disappeared and he appears to have only a cut on his forehead, looking pretty fresh for a guy who, in reality, would have just had a near-death experience. But for the townspeople who saw the fight, the point has been proven - Powell's character is no pushover.

The movies are filled with fist fights like this, of course, in which the viewer tries to believe what he just saw - that a "hero" really could beat up on someone larger than a barn. In the case of Stage West, at least, even if logic tells you that Dick Powell wouldn't stand a chance against Big Boy Williams, the filmmakers at least made the fight a fairly brutal one. Heck, after staging this fight sequence, I wouldn't be surprised if Powell really did have to lie down and sleep it off for a year.

See that bandaged hand on Powell? The film's acknowlegement of a momento from Big Boy's very hard head.

Having been in a few fist fights myself( and with my success rate, as few as possible!), I must say movie fist fights are rarely believable. The most UNbelievable fist fight in a movie( even though it's my FAVORITE) is the one between JOHN WAYNE and VICTOR McLAUGLEN(sp) in *The Quiet Man .*

In reality, a good punch to the eye would cause a swelling that would last for DAYS( based on personal experience), and no father that WORKED for a living would ever waste a STEAK on one. And I've NEVER seen anyone FLY across a room after getting hit. No matter HOW hard. In reality, most people would just crumple to the floor.

But real reactions and responses in fist fights wouldn't make for entertaining movie making. Either would hats that don't fly off in fights. Or six-shooters that only shoot six bullets instead of 20 or more. So I take it all with a grain of salt.

Up to a POUND in some cases.

That was quite a fist fight. Very enjoyable Western. But for the life of me I don't see why Burl Ives was not mentioned in the credits. Seemed odd. His role was not huge, but at least deserved to be in the lineup. Maybe he just didn't want to be associated with "Stations West."

Yep Sepia, gotta agree. Almost every bar/street fight I've ever seen or been involved in goes RIGHT on the ground within the first two minutes, and with the two participants rollin' around and punchin' at each other.

Yep, the idea of two guys throwin' and connectin' haymakers at each other while they stand toe-to-toe is soooooo unrealistic in real life, alright.

(...oh, AND contrary to how the "good guy" in the movies never throws the first punch but always wins the fight, in REAL life almost without except the guy who throws the first, aka the "sucker" punch will almost always win the fight...be he the "good guy" OR the "bad guy"!)

jane greer looked bored. it was all dick powell about dick powell - story made no sense. it was a stupid incredible waste of time for everybody involved. the fight was phony and bad. nothing about nothing. impossible to like. the only reaction you can have is why. a hollywood typical movie. about nothing goes nowhere and ends in relief.

Hmmmm...looks like somebody might've missed TCM's month of June "Friday Night Film Noir" programming and when host Eddie Muller advised us that Noir movies don't have to make to total sense in order for 'em to be enjoyable, eh?! ;)

(...'cause while I too can find many a thing to criticize about this "Western Noir", I've always found it somewhat enjoyable and never a waste of MY time, anyway)

Errol Flynn had a colourful anecdote about Big Boy Williams, with whom he was friends:

"One of Big Boy's inexplicable hates - and I don't know why - was Orson Welles.

Welles had always wanted to meet John Barrymore. One night, not long after Welles arrived in Hollywood, they met.

Welles wore a beard in those days. Perhaps that is what inspired this dislike of him in Big Boy - to the point where he went into a store with me one day, purchased a great big ham, plastered a beard on it, and sent it to Welles - his way of showing disapproval.

This night several of us were gathered around a table at Mike Romanoff's. Mike's place had just opened. A lot of us came to his support, for he was a very popular figure, a self-proclaimed bum in those days, but a character and a lot of fun. Jack Barrymore, Pat O'Brien, Big Boy and myself were at this table.

For all his enormous size and strength, Big Boy was a hypersensitive fellow, and if he felt slighted in any way, tears would come to his eyes and drop into his drinkin' whiskey, as he called it. Jack thought Williams was amusing and liked him enormously . . .me too.

Orson made one of his dramatic entrances. He stood at the door, filling it, his beard outthrust like a challenge.

Pat O'Brien glanced over. "Hi - there's Orson Welles."

Big Boy swung around, glaring.

Barrymore, absent-mindedly, for it was late in his life now and he was drinking heavily, looked puzzled. "Orson Welles?" he inquired. "Where's that?" He was under the impression that Orson Welles was some kind of watering hole or spa. . . .

Pat knew Orson. I didn't. Neither did Jack, neither did Big Boy.

I could feel Big Boy stiffen. Those tremendous muscles went tense against my arm. He took a big breath, filled with dislike.

Pat called, "Orson . . ."

Orson approached our table. "Hello, Pat." They shook hands across the boards.

Orson was the boy genius of the day. He had everybody's attention. Everybody in Romanoff's looked up to see him at our table, impressed with his size, his bearing and his sudden Promethian reputation. I personally had a tremendous respect for him as a showman, aside from his being a hell of an actor.

Big Boy kept staring at the Easterner rancorously.

Finally, in his low growl of a voice, Big Boy said, with emphasis, "You - stupid lookin' - bastard!"

Welles' bushy eyebrows lifted.

Big Boy enlarged upon his theme. "In all my **** life I have never seen a more hammy, stupid lookin' piece of blubber than you!"

I, from one side, gave him a jolt in the ribs. Pat O"Brien, on the other, must have done the same, because Big Boy grunted as if an Indian arrow had got him.

Then a fragmentary silence.

Big Boy said, "I would like to try that beard" - as if it were phony. And one big paw came up and pulled it.

Affronted, Welles took a measuring look at Big Boy, probably one of the most powerful men you could ever find. He growled in that famous voice, "Sir, obviously we had better go outside and settle this."

That tickled Big Boy. "You silly bastard. You go outside with me?"

Even Barrymore for once was silent, though he naturally enjoyed it. Anything like this pleased the Great Profile.

I thought a helluva lot of Orson's guts at that moment, for he was obviously no match for Big Boy. I hissed into Williams' ear, "Listen, you clunk, shut your trap! Leave the guy alone!"

Big Boy looked at me like a little boy, appealingly but rebuffed. He decided to take the matter no further.

I got up and said, "Sir, it has been a great pleasure to meet you."

Welles, in ruffled Shakespearean style, decided there was no point in making any more of it. That night he had all the guts there was in Hollywood."

Bravo Orson Welles for his courage, and bravo Errol Flynn for his story telling style.

twtpark, I double checked the credits of Station West because I thought that, surely, you had to be mistaken. But you weren't. Burl Ives isn't mentioned in them, even though he sings and has some dialogue in the film, including scenes with the film's star. Curious.

The IMDb actually lists Ives fourth in the casting, ahead of Big Boy Williams, among others.
