I know they're sisters, but have never heard anything other than that regarding their inter-personal relationship. Is there a good story here? Have they ever appeared in a film together? I can't remember the exact title of the thread, but scroll through and you'll probably find it. There was some interesting info in there about them. Actually, now that I think of it, I also know that we discussed them in the "Famous Hollywood Feuds" thread, which is somewhere here on the boards. The entire thread about the two sisters will come up. And it's about 11 pages long, so there should be a lot of good information there about them. vecchiolarry Posted June 1, 2005 Share Posted June 1, 2005 Hi Everyone, Joe - I know you'll be interested in this: A San Francisco friend of mine just saw Joan Fontaine in a restaurant there last week. She was sitting, with two other people, at the next table to him and his wife and mother, who recognised her. As mama looked over in astonished recognition, Miss Fontaine smiled at her. Mama asked if she was Joan Fontaine and getting an affirmative reply, said, "I hope you are well!" Miss Fontaine said yes and that was the end of that conversation. Apparently, she looked very good, but mature and heavier than her "Rebecca" days.... She was wearing a red wool suit and pearls, just like you might imagine. Joan and her group left before my friend and family and no goodbyes were exchanged. She seemed to walk steadily and assuredly, so she must be still 'with it'.... I believe Joan is now 87 or 88 years old. My friend's are much too polite, but I wondered if I would have been more assertive, since Joan is reportedly quite 'prickly' about her past and doesn't suffer fools gladly. She lives in Carmel and I know she still gives pictures with autographs thru the mail to those annoying autograph ebay hounds ( and probably average joe's too ). I am glad your mom was polite and non-invasive. Joan is probably glad to be recognized and glad not to be too bothered. Very exciting! Does anyone have a link to a more current picture of her? I sent her a letter a few years ago, and, not expecting a reply, got one about 2 weeks later! I was surprised and happy of course. She sent a nice little note with the picture too. moviejoe79 Posted June 1, 2005 Share Posted June 1, 2005 WOW Larry! Thanks! It's so great to hear SOMETHING about her! And yes, I can imagine her looking and acting regal as she apparently did. That's great that she's still out and about. They must have some great genes those two sisters, still going strong at their ages. More power to them both. And like Shaina said, I'd love to see a more recent picture of her as well. So if anyone finds one, please let us know! The last picture I saw of her was in the Daily News about 5 or so years ago. Someone on some news show or in print had made a comment about her being deceased, and she of course said that she was very much alive. The News had a photo of her walking in N.Y., looking like a million bucks in a mink coat, but with sunglasses on!
