What is Permlink?

I just noticed a bright green little dot of a button to the left of _Original Post_

in the header for whatever Thread you're looking at. I think it's new - not sure.

When you hover your mouse over it it says Permlink. Clicking it did something

but nothing I was able to notice.

 

Does anyone know what this is?

Found a definition for "permalink" that seems to fit:

I just clicked it again and, this time, I noticed the URL change in the address bar.

A new ID # was assigned to the same page.
