CaveGirl
Did anyone notice that TCM keeps showing this advertisement for the Greg Bautzer book, and the early clip says that Joan Crawford was his wife, and then a newly minted clip leaves out that edification. To whit...I believe I've read that Joan was married to Franchot Tone, Doug Fairbanks Junior, Philip Terry and Al Steele, so am I missing something here in the hidden annals of her romantic life. I'm gonna put my money on that Joan was NOT married to Bautzer. Where's Christina to clear up such details, when one needs her???
Arturo
I also winced at that statement, but haven't noticed the changed clip. I vaguely remember reading that he was her fianc?, and that she had words with other women with whom he'd get involved. Specifically, she confronted Lana Turner, in the very early 40s (around the time of the cover picture, which I mistakenly identified as Linda Darnell-think it was that dark flower in her hair thinking she was a brunette, and later noticing that she was blonde). Anyway, unless they were secretly wed, Bautzer was not to my knowledge one of Crawford's husbands.
CaveGirl
Thank you, Arturo! Yes, when I first heard this blip about "his wife, Joan Crawford" I winced. All I could think was...TCM should hire some people who don't have to research something like that, but would just know the exact names of Joan's hubbies, as any film buff would be aware. But yes...they totally changed the clip and now it does not have the "wife" bit. But then I saw it again last nite and some inserts do have the old clip. Funny, ain't it? They must have missed pulling a few of the original clips with the mistake.
Arturo
I've been meaning to go by a bookstore and peruse through this book, to see if maybe he and Joan had been secretly married. Hopefully I will get a chance to do so this weekend.
DownGoesFrazier
This guy really took advantage of his position as a movie industry lawyer to have sex with many of the biggest stars in Hollywood. I'll have to hand it to him. There were plenty of Hollywood lawyers, but he's the only one who seemed to have Wilt Chamberlain-like aspirations. Hibi
LOL. I plan to read it (a library copy) soon. I think he and Joan planned to wed, but then they had a big fight and it was all off.......
wouldbestar
A biography of Lana Turner states that Bautzer and she were engaged but she got tired of the competition and on a dare married Artie Shaw in a Las Vegas elopement. When reports reached M-G-M that she had married they thought it was to Bautzer and called her mother who knew nothing about it. They called Bautzer?s house, got him on the phone and learned he was not the groom. I always wondered how Dana Wynter ended up married to him, she eventually gave up on the whole thing. caseylalonde
Nope, she was never married to Greg Bautzer! That is definite.
traceyk65
One of the Crawford bios Ive read (can't remember which one) said that he was engaged to Lana when Joan decided to steal him from her and that she was very impressed with herself for doing so (especially since Lana was in her 20's and Joan in her 40's). Dargo2
Hmmmm...think the reason for that might've been if she wanted to know if she still "had it" after losing Monte to Veda???
Sepiatone
I'm still surprised Joan wasn't once married to MICKEY ROONEY. Everyone ELSE was! Sepiatone
Dargo2
It would have never worked out, Sepia. Both of their egos would have never fit inside the same room. (...and besides, word is Mickey was strictly a wire hanger user)
DownGoesFrazier
Rooney had tremendous energy. He was all over the place.
CaveGirl
Mickey Rooney and Joan Crawford. Now that's a match made in Hades...to be sure. Firstly, she would have regaled him with snapshots from her pornographic shoots like the one in Hollywood Babylon. Then she would have probably made him clean up all the bathrooms with Ajax and move all the potted plants in the living room saying "I don't hate you, I hate the dirt". Then she would have killed him and stuffed his small form down a disposal. Or they could have gone on the road as the Lonesome Hearts Killers and played the Palladium as a song and dance team. Joan would have led...of course.
Arturo
A few days back, I came across the fairly recent coffee table book on Lana Turner cowritten by her daughter, Cheryl Crane. In it, Crane states that Bautzer was Lana's first love (in all its implications), and her first heartbreak. She gives as the reason for the breakup being Greg having stood her up one too many times. When she eloped to Vegas for her first marriage, Louie B. Mayer and Lana's mother, among others, assumed that she had married Bautzer, instead of Cheryl's father Stephen Crane.
