A Tribute To Slimy Dan

Recommended Posts

My mother grew up in White Plains, NY which is where Dan Duryea was raised. She was born 11 years later and didn't know him, but she knew a number of people who did know him.

It seems that these folks were quite surprised to see him up on screen slapping women around and being nasty in general. "He's such a nice boy" they would say.

TCM has aired a short made around 1950 or so, and in it we see Duryea on his time off and being a scoutmaster.

Thanks very much for the personal anecdote, clore. It's nice to know that Dan didn't really shoot people in the back.

Here is the June 8, 1968 obituary of Duryea from the New York Times:

New York Times, NY

June 08, 1968

DAN DURYEA DIES

TOUGHNESS STIRRED FAN MAIL

--- IN REAL LIFE, HE AIDED COMMUNITY ACTIVITES

HOLLYWOOD, June 7 (AP) --- Dan Duryea, famed for his movie and television portrayals of the heel with sex appeal, died today. He was 61 years old.

Mr. Duryea, who had undergone surgery for a malignancy several months ago, was pronounced dead at his hilltop home. He had collapsed in his bathroom. According to a preliminary autopsy report, the actor died of cancer.

Mr. Duryea's wife, Helen Bryan, died of a heart ailment in 1967. The had two sons, Peter, an actor, and Richard, a talent manager now touring with the Beach Boys, a singing group.

A funeral service will be held 12:30 P.M. Monday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS

Six-foot one-inch tall, slim, blond and blue-eyed, Dan Duryea made a fortune by allowing Hollywood to typecast him as a movie villain. In his 28 years in Hollywood, he made more than 60 motion pictures and 75 television shows, in the vast majority of which he played unsavory characters.

Most recently, he was seen in the role of Eddie Jacks, the wandering confidence man in television's nighttime soap opera, "Peyton Place."

As movie publicity agents loved to point out, Mr. Duryea's real-life personality was quite the opposite from the one he displayed in films.

He was soft-spoken, a dedicated father and family man who went out of his way to correct his professional image in his private activities. He lived a quiet life, devoting himself to gardening, boating and community activities that included, at various times, active membership in the local parent-teacher association and command of a Boy Scout troop.

Mr. Duryea was born Jan. 23, 1907, in White Plains, where he attended high school. He majored in English at Cornell University and in his senior year succeeded Franchot Tone as president of the college drama society. He did not turn to acting professionally, however, until six years after his graduation.

CLASSMATE OF KINGSLEY

When he first got out of college, Mr. Duryea worked as a space salesman for an advertising firm in New York and Philadelphia.

After being bedridden for almost a year following a heart attack, he decided to go into the theater as a comparatively easy way to make a living. Through Sidney Kingsley, a Cornell classmate, Mr. Duryea obtained a walk-on role in Mr. Kingsley's "Dead End" for $40 a week.

During that play's long Broadway run, the actor worked up to a featured role that led, in turn, to roles in "Stepping Sisters," "Many Mansions," Missouri Legend" and "The Little Foxes."

When Samuel Goldwyn bought the screen rights to the Lillian Hellman play in 1940, he brought Mr. Duryea to Hollywood to recreate the role of Leo, the sniveling nephew of the greedy Hubbard family. The actor never again appeared on Broadway.

He quickly gained a reputation with the public as a tough guy with a penchant for beating up women, a penchant that many female patrons apparently translated into sex appeal. He told a reporter once that "my fan mail goes up everytime I tee off on a girl." His salary went up, too, and in 1948 it was reported that he was earning more that $100,000 a year.

Among the films in which he displayed this antisocial bent were "Woman in the Window," Scarlet Street," "The Whip," "Johnny Stool Pigeon" and "Along Came Jones."

CONVINCING AS BLACKMAILER

Bosley Crowther, then film critic for The New York Times, wrote of his performance in "Woman in the Window," released in 1945, that "Dan Duryea is so good in the role of the blackmailer that you feel like actually hissing him."

The star occasionally attempted sympathetic roles, as in "Sahara" in 1943, with Humphrey Boagrt, and "Battle Hymn," in 1957, with Rock Hudson, but these performances were never particularly popular with the public.

Mr. Duryea's acting style was not subtle, but it was always disciplined. His trademark was a tight-lipped vocal delivery of lines that were often punctuated with a sneer. Of his role in "Thunder Bay," a 1957 drama of offshore oil digging in which he co-starred with James Stewart, he said with some awe: "I'm legal and almost likable this time."

When his sons were young, the actor did not allow them to see his films, explaining, "I don't want them to get any wrong ideas."

In 1952, he had his own TV show, "The Adventures of China Smith," which ran for 26 episodes. Another set of 26 was made in 1955 under the title of "The New Adventures of China Smith."

His last films included "River of Dollars," "Five Golden Dragons," "The Bamboo Saucer" and "Flight of the Phoenix."

I really wish that TCM could uncover the film KATHY O' - a 1958 film with Duryea as the press agent for a rotten little child star played by Patty McCormack. He has to hide her nastiness from a magazine writer who also happens to be his ex-wife - causing him all sorts of complications.

It was up on YouTube a couple of years ago, but not for long as Universal had it removed.

Supposedly TOO LATE FOR TEARS is to be restored by The Film Noir Foundation in 2014. I've seen a bunch of copies on the web and most are watchable, but this movie does deserve a clean-up.

One must keep an eye on the running times, they vary depending on the source.

I have a dvd of *Too Late For Tears* and its rather bad, the quality of the print that is. The movie itself is a gem and definitely worthy of some restoration help. It may be Lizabeth Scott's best film role, she's a femme fatale of the highest order (really nasty) and Dan Duryea is a prize fall guy, like Mitchum was so often in those noirs. This is great seeing all of this input on this thread and the Dan Duryea site is definitely worth checking out. Has he ever had a night (or a SUTS) on TCM?

I can't recall him getting a SUTS or even a b-day salute, but that doesn't mean it never happened.

Funny about TOO LATE FOR TEARS is that at first one thinks that Duryea is doing a reprise of his character from THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW - some of his dialogue and the barging in is quite similar.

But Scott turns the tables on him, giving her best performance ever and I say that as one who was never quite impressed by her. She shines here, the film belongs to her.

clore, I'm glad that Too Late for Tears is apparently going to receive a restoration. If memory serves me correctly, Eddie Muller made reference to this when he was communicating with us last summer on that Noir thread of misswonderly's. (At least, I think he did).

And I agree with you that it is Lizabeth Scott's film. It's fascinating to watch her turn the tables on Dan Duryea, who also delivers a very strong performance in a characterization that does not turn out to be quite what viewers used to seeing him slap Joan Bennett around might be expecting from him.

What we need now is a little Joel McCrea type of campaign for Dan Duryea to get a night of films. January 23rd is his birthday, maybe its not too late to get a mini tribute scheduled (TCM programmers are you listening, please?)

In May of 2012, McCrea was Star of the Month and TCM aired 42 films in his honor.

It's a lovely thought. And Dan Duryea is every bit as deserving of a one day tribute as many others who have received it on TCM, in my opinion.

The positive response to Duryea on this thread shows that, to a lot of TCM fans, at least, he is NOT forgotten. The problem is, so relatively few of his films ever come on the channel. A one day tribute would go a little way to rectifying this.

Oh, I know about McCrea, but the other poster (mrroberts) was inquiring about a Dan Duryea tribute.

Thanks anyway.

A quick checking of Dan on IMDb shows that many of his films were at Universal (it figures, that dirty rat would do that to us :) . I guess that complicates the issue of film availability to TCM. Starting in the mid fifties he moved away from films and started doing a lot of tv work. I don't believe I ever saw episodes of "China Smith" , was the show itself any good? I'm sure he gave it his best effort. After that he did only guest shots on series, maybe he did that by choice, not wanting to make the time commitments involved with being a regular in a series. January 23, 2014 is a Thursday so hopefully that day is open for scheduling a Duryea day (no apparent relation to the Duryeas of automobile fame). The ideal films I'd like to see are *Winchester 73* , *Scarlet Street* , *Too Late For Tears* , and *The Burglar* ( a neat little noir that TCM had on recently). I also would like to see the Burt Lancaster film *Criss Cross* on again, Duryea has a nice supporting role in that one.

Of those Duryea titles that you referenced, the two that I believe have not been shown on TCM are Too Late for Tears and Criss Cross. It would be nice to see them, particularly a good print (if there is one) of the former.

Thanks to clore's review, another Duryea film I'd love to see come on that I've never seen is The Underworld Story, a tale of the newspaper trade which has been compared to Ace in the Hole. Now for this one I DO have TCM hopes because the film is available through the Warners Archive Collection. Duryea plays a mercenary newsman (what else?).Among other things, Undercover Story has one of Howard Da Silva's final performances before becoming a victim of the blacklist.

I'm sure I have seen Criss Cross on TCM. Criss Cross is a first rate production because Burt was a better actor by that time (compared to say how he acted in I Walk Alone, where his dramatic scenes looked forced).

If that's the case, James, then thanks for the correction.

I KNOW, however, that Too Late for Tears has not been on. Nor The Underworld Story.

I would love to see Too Late for Tears. This is a movie I have marked in my book Film Noir as a 'must see'. As you noted before many noir fans view Scott as the classic femme fatal, but that isn't the case in many of her noir. But in Tears she really is. Worst than Claire Trevor!

I've posted this info many times, about other films. I watched *Too Late For Tears* on a dvd that I took out from the library a few years ago (although I had seen the film years before) I also believe it's on youtube. Not sure why more posters here just don't go to the local library and take these films out, instead of waiting for TCM to show the film (which won't happen in the near future). the library has these films and it's free.

From *Winchester 73* , another great Waco Johnny Dean moment; when we first meet him and his gang, they are holed up in the farm house. The law arrives and the big shoot out starts. When things get too hot and the bad guys are going to get overwhelmed good ole' Waco sends his pals out the front door (where they promptly get gunned down by the posse) and Waco grabs the girl (Shelly) and scrams out the back way. What a nice guy, I worked for some bosses that were like that :D

mrroberts, Waco Johnny Dean in Winchester 73 is such an unmitigated murdering scoundrel but you just have to love him because Dan Duryea is clearly having so much fun playing this egotistical amoral gun slinging western badman who has loyalty to no one except himself. And Duryea does have charm in the role, too, along with that smug smirk of his.

SPOILER ALERT:

Duryea also has one of the great western death scenes in Winchester 73, as well.

James, as lavenderblue noted, Too Late for Tears is available on You Tube, but no guaranty as to the quality of the image. Some of the outdoor night scenes are so black there's only dialogue to hear. I love Duryea in this film, though, while Lizabeth Scott has never been better.

Here's one YouTube version of it but there are others if you care to fish around:

A little aside about the movie, *Winchester 73* . A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting and briefly talking to James Best (maybe the only surviving cast member) . He autographed a photo still I had of The Caine Mutiny cast. Then subject of " Winchester 73" came up. Jimmy Best was one of the cavalry soldiers (along side of Anthony Curtis) and in the shoot out with the Indians Jimmy gets killed. Actually got killed twice, once as his character , and a second time as an unnamed extra. For anyone who doesn't know it James Best worked for many years in films and tv but is primarily known today for being Sheriff Rosco on the Dukes Of Hazzard tv show.

Yes, it's on youtube, but why not take these films out of the library? Granted they are not restored versions, but it' is what it is. I'd rather watch a video or dvd on my tv than youtube. That's a last resort when there's no other alternative, but better than not seeing these great films at all. GoTo The Library!

Good tip from lavenderblu. Once I get Google Chrome, so I can broadcast the movie on my 44 inch TV (I'm NOT going to watch a movie on my laptop!), I'll be watching a lot more off of youtube.
